Somebody listed a Stone Zook without any packaging for $50, so I bought it. Obviously I would have liked it to be sealed, but being as Zook is one of my favorite Skylanders, I went ahead and made the purchase. Wondering what all your opinions are. I checked and see sealed ones going for $150+, so maybe I got a pretty good deal?

Imo. Its worth the same as any other figure out of the package. But it's still a neat figure so it's really up to you if you think it was a good deal or not.

If you planned on opening a sealed one, then you got a good deal! If you're looking to resell it, wait ~1 year and you should have no problem getting double what you paid.
Obviously, its worth whatever you'll pay for it, but getting a chase variant for $50 or less is a good deal based upon eBay sales since SSA.

He's talking about a stone ... I think 100 dollars less just because it's opened is a very good deal!

You got a great deal because IMO paying $100 for a box is incredibly silly.

With it being out of the package it's just personal opinion. A good deal is when you can buy something low and eventually sell it and make profit. Like Matteo, he bought a Glitter HotHead for an insanely low price and could probably double his profit since it's still in the box. |

I loathe scalpers so turning a profit never enters my thinking on Skylanders. I think you got a good deal for adding to your collection. Well done!

Selling a variant that you paid regular price for isn't scalping though |

if you bought it with the expressed intention of selling it for more than you paid, that is in fact the very definition of scalping.

I try to find variants that are open, because they are significantly cheaper and that's how they end up anyway in my collection! $50 for a Rock Zook is awesome, personally I'd pay $50 for any open variant. I grabbed the GITD three open at $30 each off a Wal-mart employee back in the day and was ecstatic.
I do disagree however with the person who suggested in a year it could be sold for double, I don't track these things...but a casual observation is that variants have dropped a fair bit from SA. Like many things, everyone wants the latest thing, the clear variants use to fetch obscene amounts while now its the snow flocked.

My goodness---clear variants are fetching $150 now...how much were they in the heyday? BTW, if you have to solicit an opinion from others as to if it's a "good deal", then either it wasn't and you're looking to redemption or your'e flaunting what you consider a good deal or you have no idea how to buy smart. http://videogames.pricechartin...w-highest-price Seems like you're right in line--so not necessarily a "good deal"--but you paid market value for an open Zook.

Clear variants were fetching way over $200 from memory, clear Wham and Cynder were fetching closer to $300 for quite some time (single pack Stealth Elf too).

I'm tured of you guys complaining about "scalping". If someone bought ONE stone Zook for a normal price and is selling it on eBay, that is NOT scalping. Scalping is when they buy everything on the shelf and then sell them for higher prices.

I agree, finding a variant and selling it at whatever price it can fetch is just....smart. Not everyone has interest in the variants, I know many players who find a variant and sell it to acquire more normal figures. Everyone can agree that Skylanders can be an expensive game/hobby.

Agreed, its actually useful for alot of people who are happy to pay $50 dollars or more for a figure they want, but dont have/want to spend the time searching for it (i've never seen a variant in store and doubt i ever will) |

If Activision wants its variants to remain on the shelves, then they should be set at eBay prices. They wouldn't be hard to find and only the hardcore collector would purchase them.

the fair way to do variants would be with mail in coupons hidden inside certain packages,so that anyone buying a 3 pack has a chance at a variant without them being pulled out of circulation before they ever even hit the shelves

How would that work in any country other than the US- sounds like alot of work on Activisions part for generally little benefit for them, i'm glad its not in-gmae variants that are random |

I'm sure everyone has an opinion on how they should do variants...here's mine. I think they should just make them more common...but not at the same level as say GITD Sonic Boom. Quite honestly the odds of finding a variant in Spyro's Adventure was MUCH better from what I've seen. Almost every shipment had one variant (at my big local TRU store and the largest Walmart), obviously depending on the size of shipment and location etc.

Didn't finish my thought...increase the availability by just enough to drop 'scalper' prices and make it easier for people to pursue them if they desire. Another method of variant distribution might be the coupon inside package idea previously mentioned, or even send in X amount of UPC's and get one.

well, some company is warehousing figures in Sweden and France and Canada and where ever so why not also have a supply of flocked or rock or clear or purple polka dotted variants as well. Inside random three packs would be a redemption card for a certain chase variant that would be mailed in along with a shipping fee and the local Skylander distributor would mail back the figure. Sure it doesn't benefit Activision directly (at least it doesn't benefit them more than the current situation of sending out random visible variants that get plunked by warehouse or distribution center employees before they ever reach store shelves) aside from creating some goodwill at Activision's attempt to curtail scalping as well as potentially generating more sales as people buy multiple 3 packs in an attempt to find the redemption cards
