As you all know, most of my customs are rubbish, but I've actually made a slightly better custom now, may I present to you.....

OGRE

hmm... i'm customizing a molten hot dog
and so far its not going how I want...
i'm using this grey, dark blue, black combination and it doesn't seem to go with the red tail which I don't want to paint over because it glows...

ok.. now that i'm looking at it in the light... it's totally going to be Blue granite crushers pet.....

^ Maybe you could find a way to paint it so it looks like his body is dark hardened magma stone (lava) and that the fire tail that glows is a flame bursting out from his core. You can also highlight with hues of red in areas to help create a cohesive appearance (such as the crevices on his back to make it seem as if you're looking at lava trying to seep out from them. Sorry if I'm not describing this good enough, I'm not good at descriptions X). Good luck =)!

i'm sort of darkening the red now with black streaks, but its more of a dirty look,
I think now its going to come down to how well I can make the eyes...
still a work in progress..

This is my first toy custom ever!

A nice touched up Drobot I'm pretty proud of, he took about 5 hours. I think that he looks nicer in person because I don't have a good camera...
He is NOT for SALE, so do not ask about OFFERS for him! I might accept commissions in the future but for now it's a no and I already have two more figures that I really want to paint planned right now(a "Felonious Tree Rex" and a "Victor-Vector Swarm"- that is really an awesome movie, I want to make Ralph themed customs at some point).

I found some metallic Sharpies at the post office, figured heck why not I'll buy them for future custom touchups, ended up getting an extra LightCore Drobot to completely repaint- but in the end I just decided to overhaul his detail instead since I already really love him, when I found more coloured Sharpies at the supermarket. Might do extra touchups in the future once I start using actual paint.

So I wanted to do a killer whale, so I decided I would do it even though it's been done by someone else. A good idea can be made twice I figure. This is my in progress version of Orca Thumpy.

Shark, did you use acetone to get the paint off? I noticed the paint on Jade is much lighter than on the regular version which seems to actually almost be bonded to the plastic in some places. What did you use to remove the paint?

I tried a couple different things but only 1 worked really well. It's called Goof Off. You can get it in an aerosol can or one with a spout that you can pour. It works really well but be careful as it will eat the orange base if it sits on there for more than 10 seconds or so. The rest of the figure is not affected by it but the base seems really fragile to it.

Shark, I did experience that as well. I have the spray goof off and it ate the base on a figure I painted...assumed it would eat the base of the other. I have 4 Jade Flashwings...guess I will strip one down with some q-tips when I get home as an experiment. and repaint idea.

^ Where have you been buying the Jade Flashwings, if you don't mind me asking. I can't seem to find any of the new characters anywhere; the newest one that I could find was a Lightning Rod at my local Target.

I have an extra series 2 Hex still in box, should i make a custum or should i keep it in the box?

^ You might want to save it in its box. I have some figures still in their boxes and I only customize ones if I already have an extra of it in a box, but it's up to you.

They were available at Target.com and also if you took the DCPI into your Target alot of stores had them in the back and would bring them out to you if you asked. I actually ordered 1 online and the next day found them at Target locally so I wound up with 3. Since then Target has locked the DCPI and won't sell them until the 17th or 19...I can't remember. There is a thread about it somewhere. That would be why you can't find her right now though. If you are looking for Ninjini, S2 Spyro or S2 Wrecking ball, check out Game Stop. I've had luck there. There were tons of Ninjini at my local Best Buy this morning too.

I got 3 from Target.com and I showed up at Target in Everett, WA and showed them the DPCI number and she searched it. She called to the back and a guy brought one out. They were allowing 1 per customer and it won't be on shelves till the 19th. But if you need one Opal I'll gladly hook you up with one.

I felt compelled to "fix" the metal paint on the original Sprocket model with a non-metallic metal paint scheme. The armor was given strong highlights to indicate a metallic sheen as well. The pants were given better definition and shadowing. The goggles were painted to look like the art on the character card.

"killer" thumpback looks fantastic. I am captivated by the way you did his eyes and am considering redoing the ones on my thumpback repaint to match. I think the larger pupil on yours is more realistic and menacing-looking.

Do you guys prefer customs to be just different paint schemes? Or the actual toy/figure to be re-posed?

That Sprocket looks like an acrylic painting...it's' tripping me out. You're really good at mimicking the reflection of objects. The gold arm bands are ridiculous. I tried a bit of that in Thumpy, but my patience is too thin to sit and perfect it. I am wow'd by it indeed. The eye on my guy was definitely a huge pain in the butt.

I'd love to see it painted out by you and your interpretation if it and the muscle definition. It has been a blast painting tim, but at the same time...it takes a long time.

Once I get my final coats on and clear coat him...I will be content I think.

What are you using for your brushes and your paint by the way? Is it Testors or a different brand. It has a nice matte finish to it.


Ben...I think it varies. I prefer to recreate a new character with just paint. My time is very limited so sculpting isn't an option for me at the moment, but I love to sculpt too. Someday...

Some people love articulating too. It's all a matter of personal preference I think. Most just paint because it's quicker and it yields nice results. And then...some just make the original better...which I think is pretty brilliant actually.

I use acrylic paint and small (000, 00, and 0 size) round, water color brushes. Testors and most enamel paints are more difficult to mix, thin down and clean, IMO. The paints I use are made for figures (games workshop or Vallejo brand) but you can use the acrylic hobby/craft paints at Michaels or Hobby Lobby if they are watered down ( consistency of cream).
I also spray my models with a layer of "dull coat" varnish when i am done to protect the paint from being rubbed off by handling. In this case, I prefer the Testors brand "dull coat varnish". For the skylanders models, I have also been using the dull coat as a primer that allows me to see the base colors and provides a surface that the paint sticks to well.

This one could have been a lot better but I didn't really have the patience to argue with the Sharpies any more, it's definitely going to be revisited when I start using paint on proper customs, I'm still experimenting with it. At first I wasn't sure about how I felt on the darker blue but I think it turned out nicely after I added the silver spots across his head.

Here's the LightCore effect. Coral looks nice and "rippled" especially on the left arm, but the right arm has it showing through some of the pinkie finger and it looks neeearghhh there. I'll have to go over that with paint soon.

Despite the fact that I had to repaint a lot more than I did with the Drobot, this one took a whole hour less.

I think this is my favorite repaint so far. The Ninjini model is very well done, but the factory colors seem so bland to me (especially compared to the artwork on the character card).

I love the Ninjini, too.

Wow, I got this one out fast... I only worked on it this morning. 3.5 hours. Speaking of which, don't like it much, definitely looking to sell it to someone who does, but trust me, this is his most flattering angle. I don't like the result and it has way too many imperfections but it sure was fun.

On another note, our outdoors table is a really nice spot for taking photos...

Also, I felt like the picture I took paid him absolutely no justice, so 'ere's another, superior image of Highlighted Drobot.
