There are some Skylander toys that are expensive... like Prism Break - Gold Employee Version. It's just a colored Prism Break. It's about $400 dollars, and about 8,000 in existence. If I wanted a Prism Break, I would of just bought a $10 one from Target. (I already have a LightCore one)
There is also a Flocked Stump Smash, which is for sale for about $100.There are about 7,000 of these. I'm pretty sure that they were made for a Frito Lay thing. But it's just a green version of S1 Stump Smash. I already have the S1 Stump Smash, I don't need a green Stump Smash.
On my opinion, Most Skylanders toys are expensive. I could deal with $10 skylanders, or $15 Giants, or a 3 pack for $25 dollars. But seriously, a colored Stump Smash for $100? I'm happy with my normal one. But that is just my opinion.
You could have another opinion, you might like colored Stump Smashes. I'm not arguing with you. I just find colored skylanders rip offs, especially the $100 ones. That's okay if you have a different opinion, we all think differently.

I agree with you on the "chase variants" as they're called. I just stick to collecting the normal skylanders and the "in game variants." it's nice to not have a "GOTTA GET THEM ALL!!" mindset seeing as how just trying to collect the normal ones costs enough money already.

It's a simple matter of supply and demand...I'm sure prices will drop precipitously when everyone moves on from the game...pick them up then.
BTW, IMO the Prism Break Employee Edition should be around $250 given that Peal Hex only had about 1,500 made and is now costing around $300 (as opposed to 8,000)...simple math for me there. I'm guessing they cost more because most employees have chosen to keep theirs--as well they should. I just purchased the Blue Chop Chop Variant because it's cool as ****. I am also collecting the snow flocked variants for the same reason. Outside of that, I may keep the variants to the toy show exclusives. If you can't afford it, don't do it. Getting the rare variants is a whole other game as far as I'm concerned. I acknowledge that it won't be for everyone; there's many ways to enjoy skylanders---there freaky collector types who both like to collect AND enjoy the game too like myself. Don't knock collectors for collecting variants if it isn't your bag--especially if cost is the factor.

I can see both sides of the coin regarding variants.
To an average player, variants are too expensive and do not present a logical enough value to warrant spending the amount of money that the community has decided that they are worth. But then, the average gamer who gets Skylanders to play the game does not need the variants, since collecting those is not his or her goal. The variants are not (so far as I know) different characters that lock out any form of major content, so not having them does not cause anyone to incur a gameplay penalty. On the other hand I see nothing wrong with the existence of variants, nor would I mock those who choose to collect them. Variations of collectibles are an aspect of collecting pretty much anything. In most things a class or value system is frustrating, but in any type of collecting it is essentially expected. There is a certain type of prestige and challenge that comes with obtaining rare or unusual items from within a specific collecting fanbase. It isn't really suppose to make sense or appeal to the average gamer or collector. Now, even further, I can understand that some people wish they could collect some of the more unique things and simply cannot afford them. That sucks and is the way of things. It is the slippy slope that I myself stand on. My own personal stance regarding collectable advancements for Skylanders, as opposed to pure gameplay enhancements, comes down to how badly I want the item and how much it is. I'm totally fine with getting regular Chill and Legendary LightCore Chill / Flashwing and Jade Flashwing / Hot Dog and Molten Hot Dog... But I am much more hesitant to go after, say, that Employee Prism Break you showed up there, even though it's really pretty. It's not a question of whether it's worth the money on a *general* scale, but rather whether it's worth the money to me. And honestly it isn't--that's half of what I make in a month. Anyway, this is just my opinion. Great discussion topic, though!

None of the variants in-game are expensive...except for Gnarly Tree Rex and Royal Double Trouble simply because they are tied to system exclusives...all other in game variants can be bought for regular price.
All are list price. Am I missing something? Are you confusing lightcore with regular skylanders?

I like how you said "most" and then gave two examples. You can finish the game with just one character. Every other piece in the game is 100% optional.

To me, if a Molten Hotdog is for sale for $10, I would buy it. But like I said, a gold Prism Break for $500 dollars... and it's not even real gold!

You're confused with the difference of what these figures "cost" with what they are "worth".
A white flocked lightcore Prism Break "costs" $11.99. Nothing overpriced about that, same price as any other figure. Now the "worth of the figure is about $150. Using your logic, Action Comics #1 is overpriced. |

This is the only Employee Break willing to ship to Australia that I see available on eBay. That cost translates to $763.
I really, really want one because it looks super sexy, but I'm not willing to pay more than $350. Maybe $400. Still on the fence of wether I wanna open all my convention variants... UGH IT'S LIKE A SHINY MAGIKARP, IT SUCKS IF I DON'T OPEN IT BUT IT LOOKS FAKE IF I DO D:< |

That's the thing though, you don't have to get them. Get the regular version. There were ones I wanted to have and won't spend over a certain amount for. Case in point Ninjini is the character I've wanted since I started. I can't get her yet online and she's selling for $60. I am not paying that and will wait. Same with the variants if you want one pay the price they are asking if not get the regular version and you are all set.
I did the same with Granite Crusher. Sure he's cool but I bought regular Crusher because I didn't want to spend the extra money.

This is a silly debate in my opinion.
If you're someone who casually enjoys Skylanders for the fun, the popularity, and/or the family time with your kids, then yes, obviously the so-called "chase" variants are outrageously priced and you can rest assured that the manufacturer is not targeting you in its target audience for the "chase" characters. If you're someone who is a fanatic collector, who strives for "completeness" above all other factors, then those rarest "chase" variants are right up your alley, and the manufacturer knows that very well. It's two very different perspectives on the same toys/collection. Neither perspective is "right" and neither is "wrong". They're just inherently different. Big deal; move on ....
