Cupra, he is indeed correct. I painted Eye Brawl 5 weeks ago. I just finally got around to adding that helmet look, but I believe I have even mentioned painting the eye to look like a helmet. I also mentioned doing this same thing in a Batman motif. I am the last person to copy what someone else does. I didn't get bent out of shape when someone painted Thumpback like a killer whale. I just changed my idea. And I don't believe there is a copyright on anyone's repaint ideas. There are always bound to be ideas you will get beaten to. I actually just painted Eye Brawl the way I envisioned he should have been painted and was toying with the idea of the head since I painted it.

michaels arts and craft store always have some in stock its called "Krylon GLOWZ" G.I.D. spray paint, a couple of thin coats and it will look better than the official figures

BenandDaddy! That Tree Rex looks sweet. You should pick up a bottle of gold paint and water it down to leave a nice metallic sheen to the leaves and overall feel to him. It will take away that matte finish that the plain color paints get.

And now I have a fair question to ask all you customizing folks.

What is a fair price to ask for a custom painted figure?

Base figure cost is 10 dollars and shipping cost is 4-8 dollars.

I have always eaten the cost of paint and my time. I think those that paint in here and take serious time in doing so, know it takes 4-6 hours to finish a figure in full detail. I can do some in as little as 3 hours, but that's the basic ones like Cynder.

For example, the Atlanta Falcons Jet Vac took a total of 6 hours to do...over a 3 day span. (I like to paint in spurts as I will game, then paint for 30-40 minutes and let the coat dry, do home stuff, run errands, paint another layer, game and so on)

My time is valuable and I know people don't always want to pay a premium price for something. This is why I only charge figure plus shipping costs.

But if I were to ask what would you pay for a figure with this information above in mind. How much is a custom done by me worth to anyone honestly?

I was wondering the same thing with regards to how much. I want to do a crusher next, but will need to raise funds, so will be putting Tree Rex on eBay. I'm just going to stick it on for £5 then see what happens. I enjoy customing in the figure, and the boy loves his one (Tree Rex) so want to get some more Skylanders off eBay to custom.

I hear ya. I've been wanting to add physical items to my figures, but I barely get time to paint lately, so sculpting isn't always the quickest way. Demand has far exceeded my time at this point, which is a huge source of frustration...full time job and all...plus traveling wife makes for 3-5 hours a day max to do any art of any kind.



Ben, 5 might be a tad cheap...my zombie swarm sold for like 37 bucks or something...

xerokills- If I recall right, I paid $30 each for Opheilkios' Fright Rider and Sprocket, then the shipping. I think the price is something you'd need to negotiate per customer, but I myself would pay up to $25 more plus shipping than retail for a custom that I really liked(Jin's aside, of course- but those are an extremely special case with having epic articulation). I don't splurge on them very much though.

I've been painting miniature wargame figures for years and couldn't resist "improving" Activision's models when my wife and I started our collection 2 months ago. Sunburn was the first and IMO the most in need of new paint. Once I got started, it was hard to not see room for improvement in the others.
Suggestions/questions welcome.

Teflon, those are friggin great. Are you using an airbrush on them to get the color blend curiously?

so upon further inspection, looks like you painted the highlights and shadows onto the figure. Do they look odd when photographed from different angles? My example would be the glow you put on Fright Rider's weapon from the blue electric leash. I'd love to see these from other angles.

The glow effects (ie PB's eyes) look real from all angles and the shadows will look real as long as the model is right-side-up. Sometimes the non-metallic-metal (chop chops sword for example) will only look convincing from specific angles because the pseudo light glints are painted assuming a specific-direction, imaginary light source.
I will try to take some multi-angle photos of a few and repost.

I do use an airbrush on some models but normally larger, less detailed ones ( like vehicles). No airbrush on these.

Thanks for the response. I asked because you use a lot of traditional painting techniques used in flat painting. So they do have a photorealism to them that almost looks shopped, but you can always tell a true trained artist vs a beginner just getting his feet wet. These are very well done. Thank you for raising the bar a bit!

Last night I finished my very first custom Skylander! I know the paint job isn't perfect, but I'm still proud of it. (Xerokills, I'm afraid i had to use one small idea from your Drobot) So I present: Hazardous Material Drobot!

i really like the color scheme! very nice.

Thanks, I was having a hard time visualizing him with this color scheme, so I kinda dove in brush first. I think it came out pretty well.

and so far its not going how I want...
i'm using this grey, dark blue, black combination and it doesn't seem to go with the red tail which I don't want to paint over because it glows...

ok.. now that i'm looking at it in the light... it's totally going to be Blue granite crushers pet.....

^ Maybe you could find a way to paint it so it looks like his body is dark hardened magma stone (lava) and that the fire tail that glows is a flame bursting out from his core. You can also highlight with hues of red in areas to help create a cohesive appearance (such as the crevices on his back to make it seem as if you're looking at lava trying to seep out from them. Sorry if I'm not describing this good enough, I'm not good at descriptions X). Good luck =)!
