this is good tho as long the figures released in conventions will be available soon rather than figures or variants that can only be obtained in conventions and will sell off evilbay for ridiculous prices. for all those who whines regarding release dates, you already know that games finishes easily in couple hours this series of waves after waves are just marketing strategy, making it looks like extending gameplay but it does not. makes you wait for abit to get really excited then for sure youll definitely buy them once their released. this is Activision were talking about. sux to me as most of the games i really luv are with them so i know this company really well. their at their very best in milking money to its consumers but we always fall for their schemes lol. ayt?. btw for sure those inline early morning in NYC are 90% scalpers and 10% avid fans. i just cant wait what Acti/TFB will bring to us for the new Skylanders game as they have competition now. hf and gl all!!!!

I don't live close but I don't live far from nyc. I just wonder how many they have and what time everyone will be lining up. I'd hate to drive all the way there and not get one. However, if there was ever an opportunity for all of us to take a stand against scalping this is it. Its simple. Once these start hitting ebay ignore them and refuse the feeling of having to have this now when eventually we will all get them. I have not had one single problem getting any skylander released so far . Let the scalpers post their figures and sit on them. If they were 20-30 $ then I can't blame you bc by the time u buy had to drive out to search every store it would be the same thing but when they list these for hundreds of dollars just ignore them. They will eventually realize we can get our own and will not pay over retail unless its reasonable. It would be great if everyone commited to this but there are several idiots on this board and off where money is not an issue and they could care less what they pay. I'll be in nyc getting mine and if some idiot wants to shell out $500-1000 for a figure I got for free and could buy multiple ones latet this year then more power to then they can have it. I would definitely insert a letter inthe package letting the buyer know they are a complete idiot but thanks for giving me their money. We all suffer bc of the idiots that buy these figures. Not the ones that sell them. They just post them online, nobody is obligated to buy them unless you are completely stupid or rich as %÷€$.

They need to go ahead and call it "Scalper Appreciation Day". Because I can already predict it, given the day and time. The line will be huge by mid morning, full of scalpers and parents with kids skipping school (seriously, they want to reward that?). By nightfall there will be a hundred EBay auctions for $500 plus "IN HAND". Activision practically wrote the listing themselves: "Months before the Skylanders Giants character, Ninjini, hits retail shelves".

They need to limit it to kids and make it drawing based, not first come first serve. And, if they are smart, they announce the "months before" was a typo and she will be available in the coming couple weeks nationwide - then follow through with it before the end of February. They don't do a run of the figures for a single event, the next wave is probably already made and ready to ship in a warehouse. Scalpers hurt Activision and TRU as much as they do the rest of us, because they clear the shelves disappointing their customers, and they consume a chunk of money that might otherwise be spent in stores, and they also use the refund policy to get money back for things that don't sell. If they wanted the price of a new giant to be $500, that's what they would charge for it. I simply don't get why they would do an event that so caters to scalpers.

Just ask Sega how releasing a product early in "select markets/stores" worked out for the Saturn. Come summer, they will have competition - why frustrate your customers?

Youknow, I'm really ticked off about this. As a NYC Skylander fan, this whole ordeal is just rude. Why? Because Times Square is HUGE and gets tourists everyday, who's to say some hick from TN won't be there ahead of me just because he heard about it while walking around while I, a fan of the series, will be in the back. -______-

Months is a long time to drag this out, but I'll get it when it arrives. I just thought they were trying to discourage scalping this time.

Here is the problem though, if figures go for $500, or even $100 on EBay, it just makes scalpers flood the stores, which makes it harder for us fans to get them when they finally do hit wide release. If the scalpers don't see decent profit in it, or end up having to return figures because no one is buying because the shelves are stocked, they move on to something else. This "event" is just inviting their interest back into the game right when a lot of them had realized that figures weren't scarce this time around. It makes them want to flock stores when new figures come in and buy every one they can. Scalpers thrive on rarity, and they try to create it to increase their profit.

Why so much whine ? It's getting funny.

No one is pointing a gun to you and force you to buy anything on eBay. This is a free country.
Activision is making a promo related to Toy Fair 2013. Toy Fair 2013 is happened to be in NYC, so is the promo - as simple as it is. Nothing personal, just a business.

I don't care about this event and I'm not going to TRU on Times Square despite the fact that I will be in NYC next week and Ninjini is free.
I'll buy her later somewhere in my area. Spring, summer, fall - I don't care much.

Grew up already, get a real life.

*teehee* And actually, you're not who I was talking about since you didn't know about this on February 5th while strolling down Times Square.

Unless you are actually posting this response from the future.

Sarcasm aside, how are you going to be the "hick from TN who gets ahead of me" if you're saying "not everyone from TN is a hick" (which I assume you are referring to yourself)? I know that and I also knew that when I posted it. The point of my response was about the very real possibility of an uninformed tourist who just found out about the event the day of snagging a Ninjini. Not the fact he was from TN.

P.S. Please do come so I can meet you in person. It'd be fun to see my fellow portal masters from here. xxxo

And the more scalpers are supported, the more this kind of stuff will happen. The scalpers thank anyone buying one from them. You paid one of their bills for the month, over a toy that levels to 15 and will be out... someday.

You have to remember GM that not everyone has friends in high places like you do. You got an employee Prism Break for knowing the right person. That being said, I'm not a fan of Ninjini so I would definitely not buy one from a 3rd party. If I saw one for retail would I buy it? Sure. I want to finish my collection as much as the next, but it's not worth it to me to buy above retail. I have be fortunate to find all other characters retail so I will wait till she comes to a store near me.

If there was any way for Activision/Toys for Bob/etc. to say "scalpers, we love you", this would be it.

Of course, they will then get press coverage of the lines from Toys 'R' Us going up a dozen blocks at 3pm on the day.

It is really unfair to everybody else to have this event. But it makes sense from an economic point of view for them to drive up publicity, especially when Skylanders 3 is likely to be announced and Disney Infinity is going to be diverting purchases soon.

Yes, there is some entitlement in this thread and some whining, but the core of the problem isn't either of those. They are creating a scalpers paradise with this event. And it is over the last unique figure in the game.

Sure, I'm a bit bothered apparently they are going to drag the game out that much longer. But, I'll get Ninjini when she comes out - next week, next month, 3 months from now. If that is their schedule, then so be it, I think it is dumb, but it's their ballgame.

You see though, they said they wanted to prevent what happened last year. So far, they have done a fairly decent job of curbing the scalping market by keeping the shipments coming. This isn't some variant, or "special edition" show type figure - it is a core, main game, unique figure - and the last one too. And they have now publicly stated the rarity of it. First they said they didn't want a repeat of last year, they followed through with it, then they hold back the last giant and practically beg the scalpers to take advantage of it?

There is one thing about this game I hate more than anything else, it is the scalping. Me and my sons play the game together, and I would love to be able to go to the store with him to get new figures. But, scalping ruined that last year. If I want to get the new figures anytime near when they come out, I have to go before the store opens, or hang out at Gamestop waiting on a shipment. I can't just wait till the weekend and share it with my boys, and I'm not taking them out of school for it.

So, in the end, thanks a ton TRU, Activision and TFB, thanks for rewarding the people that hurt your game. And it is not entitlement to be irritated that scalpers are being rewarded.

But Def, when you mention you will get Ninjini no matter what time it releases, do you forget what happened to the last Skylander in the first game? Wham Shell was too hard to track down. One person awhile back predicted Ninjini, or the final figures, would be hard to get a hold of again, and now with this event, it just sparked the scalpers' fire to make sure Ninjini is heavily scalped when she releases nationwide, due to thinking they can have a repeat success of whatever scalpers sell theirs come Tuesday.

The problem with this is that it's a publicity stunt attracting the wrong kind of publicity. I attribute that mostly to a very poor choice of figure. I think a monochromatic Times Square variant would've caused less of a ruckus in the Skylanders community, because the community already accepts those as a given. By giving away the final remaining Giant for free in one location, all while issuing a press release almost taunting the remaining 49 states, Europe and Canada (and most of New York as well) that the same final remaining Giant is still months away for them, they were guaranteed to irritate a lot of folks. In a world where the other type of entitlement, the entitlement of a select few to enjoy extreme luxury for no coherent reason besides circumstance, is far more unpopular than the entitlement of a few complaining fans, this type of thing seems really silly to do.

I'd have just painted Pop Fizz glittery green for St. Patrick's Day, printed a bunch of Times Square 2013 package backings for them, and avoided making a lazy decision that I knew would offend my fanbase by throwing Ninjini out there. Everyone would've freaked about that stupid Pop Fizz, and nobody would be complaining about where, when, or how he was being distributed because the fanbase is already used to stunts like that. Very basic marketing strategy, really. Never do anything that will offend more people than it delights.

Time to stir the pot a little...

If you believe this gal, then the first five people in line will get their free Ninjini!

The funny thing is I expect the actual number of giveaways to be somewhere around that number, and the rest will have to settle on the in store discount they're offering or simply pure disappointment and perhaps sheer anger for waiting in line all day for nothing.. that is if they even get in at all...

But, one thing that is going to happen with Ninjini is that she will not have the demand that Wham Shell did. Sure we will all want her to fill in the collections, but Wham Shell looked cool. Ninjini is Purple Ninja Barbie. Not exactly high on the list of figures that 10 year old boys want. Like before, the people that really want it will find it. I'm sure the scalpers will be all over them at first, but I've got this feeling when we do eventually get it - it is going to be more like Flashwing and Sprocket. Hard to find at first, now they are everywhere. My boys consider those to be "Mommy's figures" even though she rarely plays.

If the update is true, and it is just 5 figures, then that doesn't bother me as much. Sure scalpers could get them, but five of them isn't going to set the world on fire.

I sure do hope it is NOT the first five because you can certainly bet all 5 will be scalpers and they will all be sold.

Realistically, the most Ninjini's they are going to pump out for free is 10. Why? Because this whole event is made for the SALE. Honestly, the starter packs at the TRU in Times Square are kinda not flying off the shelves (and neither are those L-Bouncers). Brilliant marketing move.

Bingo. Exactly the problem.

If this event turns out and they only give out five or so of them, or they make sure they go to kids - then I would be very happy. But, we all know the scalpers are going to be lining up in the morning early. By the time kids get there, they will be long gone.

As we discussed in your Ninjini topic, report 'em.

If the auction doesn't specify and guarantee that the pre-order item will ship in 30 days, then it's against eBay rules.

I'm pretty sure that's what got the two auctions by the seller who stole your photo shut down.

58 people admitted to going to the FB event TRU made for this. This is going to end hysterically.

Oh and the description:

Experience Skylanders Giants and be among the first in the world to receive the hotly anticipated, yet to be revealed, character!

The first fans to line up along Broadway will have an opportunity to scoop up a complimentary action figure of the new character before it is officially available for purchase in North America. Offer available in the Times Square Store only, one per customer and while supplies last.

Bring your friends to see your favorite life-size Skylanders characters, meet other fans and have a chance to receive fun, limited edition Skylanders gear! Plus, have your photo taken with a character from the Skylanders Giants series, which you will be able to automatically upload to your very own Facebook account!

My guess is that 5 is right. I'll go for the sale. Anyone else from here going?

I love how this description of the event totally downplays the kids aspect of it all.

OOOh the flowery language of marketing:

companies dont encourage "scalpers" on purpose. They lose money from that. As you say after, its just a marketing gimick. AND consumers (Like all of us here) are creating scalpers. By paying what they ask, and making a demand for certain figures. If no one paid $100 for a figure early and just waited for it to be widely released by the companie, this wouldnt happen. If they're not going for more than, say, $50-80, I'll buy one off eBay too. Save myself the hassle of finishing the collection months down the line. Heck, I'd even buy an open one, I don't care. The real bad news out of this for me isn't the figure, but that they're seriously planning to string this along for another few months despite apparently already having printed the figures. If that's the case, then why the hold-up? A person can only take so much Skylander hunting.

I wouldn't blame you one bit for feeling like that. I understand wanting to get it now and not wait months, that is a very human reaction. And you have put it so very well what is wrong with this. If you pay more than $15+tax/shipping for one, then you are encouraging scalpers. The situation is created where you, a fan, find it enticing/reasonable to buy into the scalper market, thereby sustaining it. That is what is meant when people say this event is encouraging scalpers.

Exactly, Tash. That's why I am so frustrated. Paul seems like a cool guy. When he stated that they wanted to get the figures out faster this time - and seeing as how we're missing 3 uniques to be done and all challenges unlocked - I thought "cool, they're really trying to fix the issues of the first game."

Then I see the "MONTHS" statement of the TRU press release, and I thought "well, guess we were lied to."

These figures, unlike the first game, were probably done a little while ago, knowing they have nothing to fear now.

I get to wake up tomorrow knowing that people will own Ninjini tomorrow, while the rest of us have to wait because we don't live in Manhattan. The rest of us will see all of the Ebay listings, as we have them flaunted in our faces, while waiting for MONTHS to have our chance at her.

Enough with the rumors, they are just getting everyone flustered. There is nothing about "months" in the TRU press release. - http://www.toysrusinc.com/abou...special-events/

All it says is "...before it is officially available for purchase in North America." That's it. It could be months, then again it could be hours, we don't know. The only place I've seen "months" said is TheHDroom, and they do not source where they get that information, so that is just a rumor.

Here's the entirety of TRU's press release, for those that want to save time -

I've seen this movie before. This is where the line will be split between people. One side will say one site is correct, because it's the info that makes them look the most right, while the other will do the same.

So, without further ado, here is the original press release -

http://www.thetoyspy.com/2013/...s-r-us-ninjini/

It was the very first link on this topic.

But, here it is again -

What part of that stands out?

Again, I fully expect at least you and Bob to state, "well, that site was misinformed" even though the press release looks formal and was typed out as the author saw it from the actual press release. That's generally what happens when people want to be right. They use what plays to their advantage, while discrediting the rest, despite the fact we all believed that link when we first saw it. smilie

Hm. Random Toy Website or Official Toys R Us Website. Whom to believe.

That's a tough one.

Random Toy Website that told us about this event close to a day before any other source did and was 100% accurate on the other details.

Any chance that, in their rush to get the story out, some of the information was wrong or was changed?

It's interesting as well, unless I'm missing something, I don't think any of the official releases from Toys R Us/Activision regarding this event actually say the figure will be Ninjini. Just an unreleased character.

100% accurate site did not cite their source, nor is what they say supported by the official press release found on the TRU website.

Wait a minute, you said the TRU press release backs you up, and then when called on it, you come up with a random site and say that it must be right because it "looks formal"? That's is the weakest reply I've seen in a long time, even for the internet. smilie But like you said "That's generally what happens when people want to be right."

Oh, and I really have nothing invested in this one way or the other, since I haven't made a prediction to be right or wrong about, but you've been spouting off about this like a broken fire hydrant. There's an old saying that comes to mind, about people who live in glass houses . . . . smilie
