I'm sure retailers to love Skylanders because it keeps bringing people to the stores to find those elusive figures.

This is no surprise, the market for skylanders merchandise is massive now. For starters there is the games and the figures, as well as all the store exclusive figures. Then there is all the collectors merch such as the cards, dog tags, plushies, mega bloks ETC. Skylanders is a massive franchise and at this rate, has the opportunity to become as big as Pokemon!

One of the surprising things right now is that there's not really a trading card game. There's trading cards, but that series (and the ones you get with the figures) lacks any sort of game function. I think it'd be really awesome if they launched a trading card game, and the cards you get with the figures can function as special cards. (so if someone didn't want to buy the figures, they could still get them in packs and stuff. This would equate the cards with the figures as "rare" cards in terms of Pokemon tcg)
Outside of that, one of the other markets that there's not a lot of stuff in right now is decoration. I can't be the only one who wants a giant Spyro wall cling for my room. Heck, even selling medium sized posters of the characters with their elemental backgrounds on them would be great.

I would love a cartoon series. The movie should be done by PandaPanther, the same people who did all the cool trailers and in-game cutscenes. |

The surprising thing about Skylanders, at least as far as the games go, is that they release disks with hundreds of dollars of locked "on-disk DLC" and nobody's really complained about it.
They can get sales multiple ways from the figures. Some people collect them just for the collectability. Others get them to be able to use a particular character / location / item in game. And then when people collect enough figures they're more likely to get the NEXT game just to be sure they "get their money's worth" out of all the figures they purchased. I just worry about what direction they'll take when they attempt to increase profits and oversaturate the market. More games wouldn't be a bad thing. But at the end of the day, the profits come from the figures, not the one-time game sales. So how do they continue to make figure profits without releasing Air Spyro, Earth Spyro, Fire Spyro, Life Spyro, Magic (Series 3) Spyro, Tech Spyro, Undead Spyro and Water Spyro to add to standard Spyro, Series 2 Spyro, Dark Spyro and Legendary Spyro? If they do it slowly - only releasing the 'opposite element variants' for the 2013-2014 "season," and as special events (get all your favorite LIFE Skylanders in UNDEAD element variants - available ONLY at Target and ONLY this month), it works. What would have been "I'm not going to buy the same figure that many times!" becomes a "Oh, crap, I better get this set now before the price inflates on eBay." And it doubles the figures to collect with minimal effort, and has something to bring collectors back into the stores in the slow summer/fall months when all the standard waves are out. But if they try to release eight elements of each Skylander all at once, it's Guitar Hero all over again and the series is doomed, Glumshanks. |

To be honest, I hope we don't get a ton of variations of the characters. I wouldn't necessarily mind dual elements for a few characters(the idea I mentioned before was that you'd have "Fire Prism Break", a Prism Break that's coal colored with red crystals. The attacks would be similar, just changed color and Prism Break would be able to open up Fire and Earth gates) but having ones for EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER AND ELEMENT would be overkill. Using an example from the Ben 10 series, they released a line of "Haywire" figures, which were basically one alien color swapped with another. At first it was a cool concept but then they did if for pretty much all of Ben's aliens that are in the toy line which is extremely annoying for collectors because you want both of the aliens who're color swapped.
That put me off of getting any of those figures and I still see them shelfwarming despite coming out almost a year ago. So hopefully we don't end up with anything like that. I think the next step would be to have articulated figures. I don't mean to have no 80 points of articulation Figma-esque figures, just simple ones we can remove from the base and play with. Heck, if they fear for people putting them on different bases for some reason, make the pegs on the bases individualized so that only one character can fit on them.
