I was playing pokemon white 2, when I was in the flying type gym, and someone named PILOT FLYNN challenged me....interesting...

Not a reference, simply a name some characters are called in some other games other than Skylanders.

Well now I wouldn't just call it too much of a coincidence. References to other games happen all the time. (in fact, Captain Rustbeard makes a "Your princess is in another castle" joke in the 3DS game) Usually trainers in Pokemon end up being renamed for English releases (and the team that does them usually changes any jokes that were part of the original)

I guess it'd be possible, as BW2 did come out after the first Skylanders came out, although I would have no idea how long or when they start doing translations.

Maybe Skylanders could return the favor and make Fennekin appear as a Fire element. smiliesmiliesmiliesmilie

Ahah, no. Activision don't own the rights to using any Pokemon characters, and if they did, Ninty could sue them, and that'd be the end of the Skylanders franchise.

So I guess that's a good idea if you really hate the 'Landers franchise.

"Return the favour", it's not really a favour. It's just the translator for that part going "Y'know what, let's call this guy Flynn." If it were a reference, then his dialogue would also be a sorta reference, but if it's not, then it's just a coincidence. IT's like comparing Pokemon's "Catch 'em all" tagline being referenced by 'Landers' "Collect all the figures" thingy. Not quite the same thing.

Maybe in the new games X and Y they'll make a reference. Bad chance, but maybe

If it was a reference, due to a joke or whatever, then the dialogue from the NPC would also contribute as part of the reference. However, as "Pilot Flynn" stands, could be a reference to ANYTHING. Could be a reference to a real world pilot, named Flynn. I guess the fact it's a pilot named Flynn means it's also a reference to the Battlefield series(BF2), where there is also a pilot NAMED FLYNN. I guess that's a reference to Skylanders as well, right?

Also, Nintendo aren't that well known for referencing other companies games in their games.

Pretty sure this is a coincidence, but sometimes Bouncer says "the best that ever was" which is in the pokemon theme song.

Pure coincidence, "best that ever was" is a common phrase. Plus that's not even in the original theme song, which I assume you're talking about.

Pokemon is silly like that. I'm sure half the people's irl names here have been used in Pokemon.

One time I named my character one of the pre-choosen names and about an hour into the game, I ran into a trainer with the same name. smilie

It is because both companies could not help but put a pun on this. Flynn? Fly?

Probably grasping at straws here a bit, but I found the guy that Mrmorrises is referring to. He's got a Level 37 Swoobat. There's nothing particularly interesting about him or other references, but his Japanse name is Kakeru, which from what I could find is a reference to putting on goggles.

Now a Pilot of this type (a guy flying a regular airliner) wouldn't need goggles (and a pun over here wouldn't really make sense). His character also doesn't appear in the first BW games either. (to be fair, neither do 3 of the other 4 pilots. Only one, Pilot Chase is in both games)
