Giants - The huge disappointment.. [CLOSED]

I loved the first Skylanders game.. I played it for many many hours, bought all 32 figures, and even a single legendary..
When Giants was announced, I preordered the starter pack, to get the extra GlowInDark Cynder and Jet-Vac..
I've played it TWICE, ony bought one additional giant figure, but stopping here.. I have simply lost all interrest in the game..

Why? I'll try to elaborate:
- Internet play missing from arenas.. It should have been in, but wasn't..
- Giants move too slow..
- Graphics are worse than the old game
- Story (after 8 zones) is lacking.
and the worst issue
- The amount of unskippable dialogs and ultraslow mini-games (e.g. cards, memory, thumbler-locks) have increased to an unacceptable level.

Anone feel like me?

Just to point out, Giants are supposed to be slower than the regular Skylanders.

Anone feel like me?

Skylanders is geared towards a younger audience and Activision thought it'd be safer if they didn't include any sort of online access. For us older people, yes, it's a disappointment because I too thought that they would finally add an online multiplayer feature to the Battle Arena. I can understand Activision's safety for the kids but c'mon, all parents let their kids play Call of Duty these days, lol.

The graphics in Giants are noticeably better than Spyro's Adventure, actually. And I must be the only that notices that Giants runs in 60 frames per second. You can tell by how much smoother the animation is compared to Sypro's Adventure. The doubled frame speed makes the game look better overall.

I personally don't care very much for the story. I mean collecting the toys and upgrading them is fun enough for me. The game has immense replay value as it is. What more did you want?

Most of the dialogue in Giants are skippable compared to Spyro's Adventure, although I wish they would've given you the option to skip Batterson's ridiculously long dialogue in Darklight Crypt, geez. That alone makes me not want to ever play Darklight Crypt again, lol.

Skystones is a simple, quick and easy mini-game. They're mostly optional so you don't have to deal with them as much. You can instantly win a Skystones game with the Skystones Cheat item. Not that you'd ever need to buy it or use it because the game is very easy anyway.

I've never been a fan of the Lock Puzzles but both the speed in which the puzzle turns and speed of which the Lockmaster Imps fall have been significantly increased in Giants. Surely you must've noticed this because I did when I first played Giants and I was very happy with this change. The puzzle turns so much faster that you can actually turn the puzzle twice before the Imps even slide down (this might only be possible in certain puzzles). You can also purchase and use a Lock Puzzle Key if you really want to skip the Lock Puzzles quickly. Although I personally wouldn't waste my Gold on it.

So I guess I don't feel you. smilie

I didn't know about the cheat stones, but will buy a bunch if I ever play it again.. Those mini-games, while easy are dead annoying and time consuming..

Skipable dialogs is more the exception than the rule..
Maybe 10% can be skipped.. A few can be sped up by holding down X, but far from all of them..

Online play isn't unsafe.. If can easily be anonymous, and without communication.

I know that. That's exactly what I thought after finding out about Activision's decision to skip out on online play, but they still want to eliminate the possibility of strangers messaging kids and asking them where they live, lol.

1. Yup. Agreed fully on internet play. You won't find any debate here.

2. Giants aren't slow at all. If anything, all of them except Bouncer are moderate speed, because all of them except Bouncer have charge/flying attacks and can have their +Speed Heroics done. It's not that bad, and it was an intended weakness to stop them from running roughshod over all the other characters. I think they picked the best stat, personally. I'd take low HP, power, etc., if those made any sense, but they don't. I guarantee, if you do your Heroics and put on the right hat, you won't be too bothered by these characters' speed.

3. Disagreed on graphics; they're far better. Darker, so maybe up the brightness on your TV, but far better. Textures are richer, enemies are far less jagged and more detailed, and at worst some of the playables look the same as before. Lacking some of the atmosphere of S:SA in parts perhaps, but certainly prettier. One needs only look at the servant of an Undead Spell Punk before and after (it's the easiest example to find - just do Cynder's Heroic) to see the improvement. Then again, I do suppose there's no accounting for what TV you have, and my assuming HD is just applying my own standards, where there is some objective betterness to be seen. Dark graphics on dark TV = bad, I can't argue you there.

4. Agreed on story. Willikin World seems to be setting up a tragic/sympathetic Kaos, but once you get to his castle, he's the same thing as before and stays that way. Conquertron appears to be planning to betray Kaos and become the main villain at times but it's never followed up on. Both of these things happening would've been high drama for a kids game, but I was hoping they would have the guts to address themes like sorrow and betrayal instead of taking the easy way out.

5. And no, just no, on the last one. You might've had the luxury of being a Wii player. I know that you have, in fact. Why? Because that's the only console where you could skip a thing. Us PS360 players are actually seeing what's happening in Giants as a 90% REDUCTION in the amount of cutscenes we have to sit through. While there are still a couple I wish I could fast-forward, at least every console has that option now. Blobbers' Folley being the most notable and obnoxious exception, but not enough for me to give you that point.

So overall, I'll give you four of your five points. Even the one about graphics, because I know there's something about your method of display making them look worse. But the cutscene skipping thing is something they've specifically addressed and made better for all non-Wii players out there. And there's nothing stopping you from doing Heroics on your Giants. Other than that, not a bad critique.

The only problem I see with Skylanders is that it's a very safe game that makes very few changes in comparison to the formula of the previous installment. So I'll say that I hope they come up with something new and different for the sequel. <.<

But you have to ask:

Is this terrible design of Bash, or terrible design of Crusher?

To me double trouble is phenomenally overpowered with his rapid tick, autolock beam and is a prime example of a character who needs to be taken down a notch, not have characters brought to his level.

^ I agree. There's a reason people refer to characters like Bash as "broken." It's not really a compliment so much as a neutral term to say that they don't play well within the mechanics of the game due to general overpowering. Bash shouldn't be able to roll in and kill Trigger Happy in one combo, but he does. Crusher is a fair and well-designed character who doesn't destroy the natural order of things by being too good. Bash, on the other hand, outdamages virtually everyone and it takes barely any finesse to do so.

Well kind of sort of.
Although online play would be fantastic, I'm sure there's probably reasons that aren't obvious to us as to why it wasn't included. (Time was probably the biggest reason) But of course, online play doesn't make a game. I've had plenty of fun in games that don't offer any sort of online multiplayer.

Giants are double the size of Skylanders and are intended to be huge lumbering..well...giants. It makes sense that they wouldn't move very fast. Although, just slap the Winged Hat on one of those suckers and you'll be much better off.

I don't think the graphics are any worse than the last game. I've heard rave reviews of how the game looks in HD but I don't have the Wii U version.

The story I think is pretty solid, although the addition of more levels would have been much better. I don't know exactly what they could have changed for the plot, but it would have been nicer to have it spread out farther.

All dialouge should be skippable. Wii version you just hit "C"; dunno what it is on other consoles. Agreed though about the tumbler things...I hate those with a passion. Thankfully, you can skip those, and the Skystones with the passes from Auric. (He sells the keys in the Game Room, you can also win them from some of the heroic challenges you buy throughout the game) So there's at least a little work around for them which is nice.

Can't pass up the card game on the Pirate Seas though which is annoying.

It sounds like he only has a few characters so he doesn't have most of the heroic challenges. I think they are one of the best parts of the game and I'm sucked into getting all the characters once again so I can have all the challenges.

If he's bored with it then sorry to hear it but Giants is better in every way and I have already put 40 hours into it. My NintendoLand and Mario Wii U have hardly been played.

Okay, hold on.
1. Giants are definitely slower, but they are powerful, and often have attacks that allow them to travel faster.
2. I was amazed at how the graphics were improved in the sequel.
3. The story was good, but it certainly could have been done better with more levels.
4. This will probably blow your mind, but I like doing Lock Puzzles and playing Skystones.... most of the time.
5. Online play, while missing, still exists in the series on Skylanders: Universe. If they do put it in, there would likely be restrictions to keep kids safe.
6. Un-skippable dialouge is uncommon but annoying.
7. The username of the topic creator sounds slightly inappropriate.
8. LightSpyro13 does seem to always find Aura's posts.
