It was the same for me up until about 2010, so it's not bad.

I honestly find Spyro 1 boring, and way too fast. But many others will disagree with me.

I love the first one. If it's not too expensive for you, I'd at least give it a try. It's indeed quite a bit different than 2 and 3, but it's not TOO different. You can't hover anymore, since instead of hovering you just drop, and a few other differences, but still imo it's worth the try.

but i love it all smooth

Spyro 1 is a very fun game, and it has significantly more of an emphasis on platforming. But there's no problem with it. Spyro 2 & 3 are widely considered better than the first, with a greater degree of exploration and fun sidequests within the levels.

Not playing a game from a series isn't bad at all.
It makes it more fun that you still have a game out there to play instead of playing them all.

You mean the double jump glitch? I loved that. Using a charge jump after your normal jump and then gliding for extra height and distance. You could explore so many places you weren't intended to go. ^.^

Personally, I think STD is my least favourite of the first 3. I mean, it's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination but I think the other 2 are better. You might want to play it for consistency sake, but other than that there's no reason to.

While I knew well of the first game, my introduction to Spyro was Year of the Dragon. I played all three games reverse order hence why the first didn't leave as much of an impact as the second and third.

I think that the first Spyro game is really good for it's time.

It was a decent game back in '98. Although the lack of hover in that game ALWAYS throws me off. <.<

It didn't really bother me too much, that you couldn't hover, and there wasn't any challenges, I found it to be more adventurous, than other Spyro games later on.

From a platforming standpoint I definitely agree with you. But in terms of greater open world design and an emphasis on exploration, I definitely think Spyro 2 did it better. There were a lot of levels in the first game that felt disjointed. Which wasn't a bad thing. But I just love exploring the levels from the later games more than hopping around the smaller levels from the first. <.<

You may want to give yourself the biggest favor of your life and play the first.
