Here are the best stores:
Walmart: Found both Rock variants there on day 1, but only bought Zook.
ToysRUs: Got Rock Whirlwind in a 3-pack there. They had 2 of them, stupidly bought 1. BUMP: Bought a Clear Stealth Elf here.
Target: Several claims from people that they found some older variants there.

I am curious too. Has anybody around the Maplewood MN area have any luck finding any besides Granite Crusher? I would like to find at least one for my collection.

I was able to find Glow in the Dark Warnado at two different wal-marts back when they first came out. That is the only place I have seen variants.

I would call those variants with an *. They are generally a lot easier to find then say, a silver, gold, sparkle, crystal or stone.

I say the others are 1/2 variants since punchy and gnarly and such actually look different in game an the fig where the others just look different on the fig.

Um I reckon Big W (In Australia) has the best chance of variants since I asked a guy earlier in the year if they had any GITD's and they said they had all 3 but sold them to one person. Also I found my GITD Zap there

What a vague list. I don't think I've ever seen a collector's item variant in TRU.

I consider anything with a different appearance in game as being a proper variant while the others are collector's fodder items. |

For Skylanders and Giants, I've never seen a rare variant in stores, never even so much as glimpsed somebody else holding one in their hands to check out, ever. ...and I've been to many launch events and been first in line, etc. Never, not even once.

I never find a variant at stores. I'm assuming you have to be at stores when they first open . My philosophy is that those people are getting , or the scalpers, or the store associates hold them for themselves or others. Hopefully my luck will hit someday for a variant.

at toys are us on realease I found a rock and some kid a showed it to grabbed it right out of my hands! even though it was from OUR shopping cart! So he put it in his and when he wasn't looking I took it back and we ran in to the video games section checked out and speed way. And as we were walking out the door he realised we took it back and looked about ready to chase us and kill us!

I've never seen variants anywhere either. One store won't have them over another; it all depends on the location of the store. If you're in a heavily traveled area (tourist destination, general stores in the city) you're more than likely not going to find anything there. In smaller stores out in the country, you'll probably end up having better luck. That's not to mention though things like scalpers, people getting to the stores ahead of you, employees taking the figures out, etc.

Employees who do that make me angry. When I worked at wal-mart, you couldn't buy stuff while on the clock. You had to wait until lunch or you were off.
They are just a bit below the scalpers in my book. |

I think there really needs to be two different terms for "variants."
There are the "gameplay" variants that are easier to track down and were produced in large volumes (your unique starters, the Legendaries, GiTD Sonic Boom, Amazon Flameslinger - Blue Bash and Gummi Drill Sergeant would have been in this category as well if Spyro's Adventure had a Special category). These are ones that are common enough that they can be tracked down with little effort, although some of them like your Wii Tree Rexes are still prohibitively expensive. Then there are your "chaser" repaints that aren't recognized by the game as unique, but are sought after by the pure figure collectors. (Correct me if I'm wrong about that - are the Stone or Glitter characters considered "Specials" in Giants, or just Series 2?) Of course, you've got grey areas like GiTD Fright Rider where I'm not really sure WHAT you'd classify him as. I've never seen him on the shelves compared to how common GiTD Sonic Boom still is around here, but he's still given "special" status ... (or is he another overseas exclusive like non-starter Dark Spyro? I really need to get up to speed on my variants since I'm starting to run out of normals to get, heh) |

That's what I was saying in another topic actually! I drop them in 2 categories: -In-Game (Legendary, Gnarly, Dark, etc) These characters are actually differently colored in game -Chase (GITD, Sparkle, etc) These characters register as "Special" and aren't physically different in game.

My parents shop a ton and they are pretty much how I've successfully gotten every standard figure released. They spend a lot of time going to movies and when the movie isnt for hours they often go to Walmart, Target, sometimes TRU for me. They have never seen a variant. EVER.
I personally go to every skylander section I can find when shopping and I've never seen any either. Yeah I have all the easy to get ones (besides Blue Bash, decided it wasn't waiting in line at TRU for that one) -- Flocked Stumpy, Gold Flameslinger, Red Drill Sergeant, the sidekicks, etc but nothing that couldn't be found with determination. These rock/glitter/gitd just seem impossible to find, like I never found any gold/silver in series 1. One day I'll get lucky! Whats sad is I wouldn't even sell them, I love collecting these darn figures!

The store in question on the Brisbane southside but at least one of the workers there is now clued up and publicly stated that she would scoop up any she saw to sell on EBay. So that "resource" has run dry. I also previously found 2 gold variants at the JB Hifi across the road from there. As for the other person, I believe it was the Hyperdome Big W, also in Qld.
