I was looking at my collection of skylanders cards while playing skystones and i thought. what if activision actually made a trading card game based off of skystones instead of making screenshots into cards?
there are currently 80 skystones, that would be more than enough for a first series. and a starter pack comes with rules, playing mat, and a holo stone? oh, yeah, and 9 red/white dots to mark which card is currently yours.
maybe the second set could be all the skylanders. each side represents: (^) luck, (<) agility, (>) attack, and (V) defense (based off of stats.
just throwing this idea out there. what do you all think?

I thought skystones would have been more interesting if the sides of the stones that were played, but still had an open space next to them, we're still active. Ex. If you put down a two sided stone next to a three, your stone would change, but only after the other sides of your stone attacked and changed the ones that it could. Also it would have been fun to alternate turns on who throws the first stone and pick different boards to play on.
About your idea, I think it would sell moderately just to collectors. I don't see it selling as we'll as checkers, othello, chess, risk, stratego,.....

A card game seems like the next logical step, unless for some reason Activision thought that people would spend there money on the cards instead of buying the toys.

well, they are selling cards, but the cards are just screenshots on sharp rectangles. so i think it would be cool to have a skytones trading card series, whether you choose to play or not.
@7habits, i was wondering about that too, but i guess it just makes things simpler if you stuck to basics. i also really like the different boards thing. maybe in every 10 packs or so you'd find an elemental stone? and if you made the skystones game practical trading cards, it will sell pretty well. you gotta trick the audience to thinking the cards are a mere collectible while true skylander players would know how to use them correctly! like i said earlier, people collect pokemon cards, but only 1 in every 20 or so collectors actually know how to play the game.

I still say the game would have to have "point construction rules," in that your five cards couldn't have more than a total number of 20 "arrow points" combined. Otherwise, everyone would just play the stones with 8+ points, and all the others would rapidly become useless.
You can't really market a card game that has eighty cards and only about a half-dozen of them are ever worth using. To make the game more complex, I'd rather see a 4x4 grid option. If you make the core rules more complex, it'd remind me of the obscure optional rules in Final Fantasy 8's Triple Triad. Same! Plus! Same Wall! Ugh. |

those are some really nice ideas, but when anything gets too complex, the dull-minded lose interest.
