It was only a matter of time until another company will come up with toy-game model. Considering Disney's huge intellectual property including the newly acquired rights to Star wars, Disney might be Activision's biggest competition. Forget pokemon! Nintendo is probably still in denial with Skylanders.
The scary thing about Disney is (1) they've got the characters that are very well known, have a strong following and well rooted across a huge demographic and (2) they've got the money and they know how to market their product.
Disney has TV shows, a tv channel, movies, games and merchandise around all their IP's while Skylanders just has the 2 games and a couple of licensed merchandise. If this comes out by 2013 then Skylanders will have a direct competition for the 3rd game (I'm 99% sure we'll have a 3rd game!). Regardless of how good the Disney game will be a lot of people are guaranteed to simply get because it will have the Disney characters.

i can't see flat discs catching on and having the collectability of actual figures.
hopefully the discs at this stage are just to prove the concept. on a side note, epic mickey was such a disappointment i cannot even be bothered trying epic mickey 2 |

No wonder they bought star wars, and tried to buy hasbro. If they had hasbro the could make high quality star wars figures and make a skylanders type game. It all makes sense.

...Yeah, there's an issue with this. Skylanders worked well because there were only 2 characters that has been in anything but Skylanders; Spyro and Cynder. Apart from that we were introduced to a wide range of new and exciting characters that we'd never seen before and didn't know what to expect.
Because of this, there's a kind of attitude that says "Oh, that character looks nice - I might buy them." However there's an issue with Disney - everyone has seen the characters before, everyone knows the characters that they do and don't like so if you don't like a character. In this situation, there won't be any of that mystery in "Oh, I wonder what personality this character has?" or "I wonder how this character will play?". I mean, it's obvious that Sully and Mr Incredible are gonna be brawlers and it's obvious that Jack Sparrow is gonna be a slice 'n' dice type of character ETC. No mystery. But, I think I'll laugh if they ever add Star Wars characters to it. |

They may be tokens now, but the money will be in collectable figures, just as it has been for Skylanders. If Disney makes a lineup of great looking toy figures instead of tokens, collectors will flock to them. They would have a massive character base to draw from. Can you imagine being Jack Sparrow battling it out on a Death Star?
I hope they include Kingdom Hearts. |

Disney also owns Marvel Comics and all of its properties. With the recent movie attention and the near infinite amount of characters and existing storylines.

I forgot about Marvel! LOL. I think one thing Activision has going for them is they've got 2 games already out. If they stutter on innovation (Hello!? Online PVP please) then that could be it for this franchise! Disney might has some patent or intellectual property issues with having figures work their game since obviously Activision owns the rights to the tech (I could be wrong). I think Disney's intellectual property is also too big to fit in one single game. An MMO game using the video game-toy model should be the right platform to cover all their franchises with the ability to expand on later franchises and properties. Ex. They could release a game that starts with a couple of Disney worlds (latest and most popular franchises) and later expand it cover additional worlds. The possibilities are endless and they've got the infrastructure in place to market and distribute it already.

Also, if they provide a four player experience or even online gaming, that could open up a lot of possibilities. The opportunity to combine different characters and use them in different worlds would be a lot of fun. Collecting the figures would be Infinity!

Correct! Just imagine a huge world containing all the Disney properties. Star wars, Toy Story, Marvel all showing up in one space. LOL! Disney could also split it up into different games like one for SW, one for Marvel , etc. They could not only own one but a couple of games that directly compete with Skylanders.

I think this would work extremely well if they have some sort of "joined" universe that Kingdom Hearts does very well. So like, you can go to all different locals and play with any character.
I can guarantee you this- I'll buy a Stitch figure any day of the week.

The Disney collectors will go bonkers on this. I can just image the amount of exclusives and variants that will come out based on the number of IPs that they own. The cool thing about it is that it will ba part of the game so people won't only be collecting objects but they literally have pieces that they can use in a game.

Disney has a huge catalog of characters to work with. Ah, but imagine for a moment that the next Skylanders game returns to its Spyro roots and they make a game around the Spyro dragons and characters, Ignitus, Hunter, Sparx, Malefor. Now that would be an awesome game! Malefor returns and the dragons and dragonflies are in peril, Spyro and Cynder have to return to save their world, taking the Skylander characters with them to help in the fight. It is a dream that I have...

Unfortunately the brand will sell it and nothing else.
Disney Interactive as a whole hasn't been good since the 90's. I shouldn't judge, maybe THIS TIME they're trying to make a quality game and try to repair the idea that "games based on movies are shovelware" that they relish in. I will have my popcorn ready and hope they remember Up exists

^ YES this... I'm a huge fan of Disney and Pixar and I think using the plethora of characters from all sorts of genres and eras in the Disney empire would be ingenious!!! I can't wait to see how they create this incredible concept... I'm imagining a sort of Kingdom Hearts style of worlds with add-ons and extra packs left and right!! I really don't think Skylanders could compete with Disney unfortunately but Disney wouldn't just buy them out either! I would LOOOVE to see a Spyro-rooted game with all the favs; Sparx, Malefor, Cynder.... Bringing it back to the roots would be EPIC in my opinion!! Just step back for a minute and think about how Skylanders and Activision took this risk on a huge investment... and changed this genre of gaming forever!!! I think many other offshoots like this will pop up in the next few years, but Disney could definitely push Skylanders into the shadows if they pull this off right!! This game's development will definitely be interesting to follow!!

If they do it right they can make it future proof to handle any future IP's. Just imagine having a tie in to new movie releases and whatever new products they come up with. Ex. Limited Edition Marvel figure with DVD and Blu-Ray combo pack of the Marvel Movie. Limited Edition figure or some sort of arena with a newly released Movie.
The fact that they have products like movies and tv shows will open up endless possibilities with a game-toy model. Most characters are also well established and do not require Disney to create a back story for them. Just thinking of the Marvel IP's and you've got a never ending list of characters that can definitely make money using this model. I still would like to see Darth Vader VS Cinderella LOL!

I personally think this is a really dumb idea. Kingdom Hearts is only so good because of Square Enix's assistance in making it, I don't see them tag-teaming with Disney for this game. (If they do then wow cool)
But there's no real surprise with characters with this, and I wonder how Disney would handle the distribution, pricing, and overall design of this project. Will they copy Activision to a T with gameplay and design AND marketing or will they blunder about. Or will they overproduce figures and the game flops or under-produce and the game is a success. How will the figures even add up? I've been hearing "Token" get thrown about a lot and all I think of is the character's face engraved on a coin, how lame. I really hope they make figures 'cause I would still pick up some Incredibles and Lion King ones haha. I find it a tad funny how people are predicting Marvel and Star Wars into the mix, it makes me wonder what Disney's target audience will be for this if that's the case. With the clash of so many different movie universes I could see this being a Brawl Style Beat-em-up, since a story jumping from Star Wars to Marvel to Disney Princess would be rather..interesting. I also wonder how they will incorporate the "Toys/Tokens coming to life on screen" and the "Portal (or whatever their calling theirs)" into their game story. It'd be pretty lame if the game had no explanation, the toys and portal are at least explained in Skylanders and give it it's own little charm. I guess I shouldn't nitpick so much, we don't have a whole ton of information anyways. xD; But hey, I'm a little optimistic for this, I'd love to see more companies try to tackle the "Skylanders Formula" so I hope Disney puts some actual effort into this, I actually want them to prove me wrong.

Yeah, Skylanders 3 needs online if the franchise is to survive at all. Not that I wouldn't be fine just having another game, but we should have it anyway, and a lot of people would not buy it I think(I remember in the old days everyone was mentioning they would probably quit after Giants if they didn't add online to the third).

The idea of having tokens in blind packs sounds fine with me. It promotes trading and like someone has mentioned, distributing tokens with the movies is easier than distributing a figure.
Pros for token based game: - Cheaper for the consumer - Easier to take somewhere else - Promotes trading and actual interaction - Takes up less space Cons: - Not a lovely looking figure (but on another note tokens can look awesome if done properly) - Blind packs - May end up more expensive and a lot of wasted tokens if the consumer has no access to trades. The benefits of it being Disney is that; - It would not die off, thanks to their mountains of cash - Could incorporate Disney Movie Rewards - International image - Plenty of fun and enjoyable characters P.S I am very, VERY excited for this. |
