Excuse me, not trolling, but I have a question for all Skyros and other Skylanders groups...

Why do you collect so many figures? I don't get the hype... I mean I don't like Skylanders, but I don't hate it. It's just they're so damn expensive, and you can just blow all that money off like that, no complaints or regrets? I just think it's all an Acti-scam (in my opinion, of course). But whatever you do with that money is up to you.

I just wanna know what these figures really mean for you guys and why you dish out everything for them.

Thanks.

Collecting things isn't new. These collectables have a nice bonus of being able to be played with in a video game.

I like Skylanders and it's awesome "toys come to life" concept, but I totally agree that it's an Acti-scam.

I understand, but why spend like $15 for a little plastic figure when the game could've been designed that you unlock every character as you go? You know, the original way. This is why Activision is greedy. Anything to get more money in their growing vaults.

It isn't collecting without scalpers!

I wanna be the very best scalper
Like no one ever was
To hunt them down is my real test
To sell them is my cause

I will travel across the land
Looking for variants
Each Acti-scam to understand
The toys that come to life!

SKYLANDERS!!!
Oh, it's you and me
Selling is my destiny
SKYLANDERS!!!
Oh, scalper's best friend
In a store I must defend

SKYLANDERS!!!
Gotta scalp 'em all!

SKYLANDERS!!!

It's not just about the game. It's the hobby of collecting something. Of having something physical. The fact that I can take my figure I've used on my game to anyone else's game and its my skylander. My hat, my nickname, my levels.

Would I collect them without the game? No probly not. I probly wouldn't have even gotten the game cause it would've been just another blip on the radar full of platformer/dungeon crawls. It's something all it's own. I loved collecting cards from assorted games but by my age there's almost no one to play the game with so I lose interest. With this there's always something to do with my collection. It gives my love of collecting more purpose.

Basically it comes down to being the type of person who collects things.

I guess you're right. But the money... The whole... Thingy of all the Skylanders ever made probably mark the retail to a high-end tablet, or at least close. 8.8 Now that's where my money would go to. Whoops, veer off topic. :3

Agreed its expensive but I look at it like this. Aside from the initial game, the figure purchases can be pretty spread out. That meal at McDonald's, that coffee, that magazine you get. Instead I get a skylander. Plus it makes it easy for the wife and my parents to get me gifts come Xmas time. I just want skylanders lol. 10 bucks here and there isn't really much. I don't have to have em all first, I just have to have them all when it's all said and done.

Really though - I have many more ridiculous toys/figures/games that I spend my money on.

If I wasnt buying skylanders id be spending my scratch on pokemon cards, spawn figures, hot wheels, and probably a fuel line for my car. So either way I got some stellar pickup lines

As an honest answer-it's because I have the impression of getting "more bang for my buck". (This of course is really up to the individual person)

I look at it this way- I collect things from many different lines. Star Wars, Pokemon, Legos, Transformers, etc. On average, most of the figures from those lines are now at $6+. For the most part, the figures are relatively small (like maybe 4 inches?). With Skylanders, you're getting a pretty powerful piece of technology for a few bucks more. This figure not only can be used for a wide variety of things, but the sheer fact that it can store and remember the data from all of those different games is astounding. I mean, 10 years ago we'd be going crazy over this, right? haha

That's not to mention though that the figures all look cool. Skylanders has hit the perfect mark- being not so expensive that people won't buy them and not so cheap as they look ugly or are poorly painted, etc. Yes there are exceptions but for the most part the painting and poses on these characters are fantastic. It's like having little trophies of the characters in your collection. I think what also works is the brilliance of the line- the data is all there in the game already, but parents I think are more receptive to buying them because you're getting a physical, tangible item than downloading some add on pack for your game. Plus, the game really is fun, albeit short and it's insanely easy to pick up and play no matter your video game experience level.

That's not to say that I don't care how much they are or anything- I certainly am well aware of the money I'm dropping on these things. But the way I see it, I'd rather spend my money on these things than I would any other things that I currently collect, which is why I've been lax at getting new things for those other collections- now all the money is funneled into Skylanders.

I'm content spending $10 a pop for cool figurines that let me play characters cross-platform over a series of games. With the "Series 2" getting wow-pows and "Series 1" not unlocking heroic challenges, it makes me worry that these toys aren't going to be as future-proof as I had hoped. So, for now, I may not even buy more figurines until I see how Activision treats S1 and S2 when the next game comes out.
