Hello all. I see some more Q's this AM.

The USB cable is permanent in the portal. Same as the old XB360 portal.

The figure stats screen does now contain a "time played" stat, but unfortunately even S1 figures only contain a stat for playtime in the Giants game, not for old playtime in S:SA.

As far as the actual 'body' of the portal being GITD, I was wrong - the small ring around the bottom of the portal and the top (where the figures stand) and the top of the wall around the edge do glow in little bit in complete darkness. Sorry for the misinformation on the first post. The glow is nothing like GITD Cynder though.

We are going to see if we can work out how to make a decent play & character video for you today. I've never done one so it's a decent challenge.

If you look closely at the picture posted, you'll see that the symbols are molded in to the portal and painted in the same rock colors as the walls. They are not cut through and backed by white translucent plastic like the original, nor painted in phosphorescent paint like the Cynder next to it.

The ads ARE very misleading, since they seem to indicate that the very bottom of the portal, and perhaps the top platform and symbols would glow in the dark when the portal is off. Now we have the video showing that their idea of a glow in the dark portal means that the whole portal will light up during play.

My son LOVES the glow in the dark portal, and is disappointed that his pre-order is at Toys R Us. We would consider switching and eat the $5.00, but the balance of the money for the game is on a TRU gift card. He does hope to pick up the new portal on eBay later.

I got my son the Giant starter pack with GITD Cynder lastnight from my local Wally World.
Lucky for me the cashier was cool an didn't ask any questions My son has been playing it all day.

actually, is there any difference in-game between the first games portal and the new portals?

i ask cuz i want to only collect things that are different in game.

Man, seeing Jet-Vac and Tree Rex out of the packaging is really getting me excited for sunday

Didn't see that coming. I so thought this was a hoax.

How was the first level?

Not having any luck recording the game level 1 walk through. I just don't have good enough capture h/w to make a quality video, and I don't want to post junk. (I have seen some of the youtube walk through videos of other games and they are junk...) I will let you know if something changes and I can get it done in the next couple days.

On another note, we did some experimenting with the portal, old figs and game compatibility. My L-Triggs leveled up to 11 and I loaded up S:SA and first off, the new portal works great in the old game. Second, the old game still saw him as level 10 (as expected) so I changed his hat to make it write to him and then moved back to S:G and he was still at level 11 and had the correct hat I had just equipped him with in S:SA. They must be writing the new level 11-15 info in a different area inside the figure so it does not get wiped out when figs go back into S:SA. Would make sense.

Also, had the first really difficult boss battle (even on Easy difficulty) on Chapter 7: Wilikin Villiage against the Chompie Mage.

Lastly, there is a new 'game' that you start hearing about in Chapter 1 or 2 (the NPC's talk about it) and by Chapter 4 you learn how to play it (the Pirates teach you - imagine that). It's called "Skystones". My son's web site 'Skylanded' explains it fairly well, see the URL in my signature and look in the "New in Skylanders" section. You end up playing this game quite often to get keys, doors open, gold, etc. Sometimes when you beat people they give you new Stones that are usually their best one and you can also buy new stones from Auric. There is some strategy in the game so some people may find it frustrating at first. To make sure you can get good at it, one of the Pirates "moves in" on Flynn's ship (the center of the game now, the "ruins" as it were) so you can play him at Skystones anytime you want and when you win he gives you new stones...

Just got back from my local Walmart (New Orleans, LA) and they had Giants as well. They had 3 playstations, 2 xboxes and about 3 for the wii, but only the portal owners ones. They were locked in the case where they sell the DS and Xbox machines. They didnt have a price code showing they were for sale and I didnt try to get one because I preordered from bestbuy already (and they didnt have the start pack for the Wii which is what I am getting). Also since I read the issues with scanning it already on this board, I knew it would be a hassel and that with the fact that I have paid for it already at BB, I can wait 7 more days....

But it is out... just not being sold (at least they arent suppose too)

A Walmart near me had the PS3 and Wii accessible along with the Wii portal owners pack, but I did not purchase it (or try to really) as the glow in the dark Cynder is not glow in the dark plastic but rather just paint. Looks cheap to me. Glad to have seen them though as I've now made up my mind and don't want it.

Hmm... I am disappointed. I put all four of the original adventure pack items on the portal (they each say "Series 1" and the name of the adventure pack on screen) and each one unlocked a battle arena and battle mode item/weapon and of course the appropriate chapter (chapters 17-20), but then I went ahead and played through Dragon's Peak and it WAS (essentially) THE SAME. There were a few differences and if you have played through DP a number of times you will note the slight changes, but essentially it is identical to the S:SA chapter. The colors of the enemies are a bit spruced up graphically but the same ones are still in the same places. Vathek does get in on the action a little more, but the boss battle is still easy.

One part that was extremely odd, about 1/2 of the way through the level, there is an island platform with two bounce pads, one to the left and one to the right by the waterfall. The right one takes you up on top of the water fall to advance you in the chapter and the left one I am sure used to be actually down on a little platform below the level of the island and you actually had to 'fall down' onto it and then it bounced you up to a higher island and you tooted Flavius' horn and he took you to an island with the Legendary treasure or story scroll. In this version of DP, he takes you to that remote island except nothing is there. Just a bunch of rocks piled up (I had Tree Rex pound on those for a bit to make sure they were not hiding anything..) There was just nothing there except to toot Flavius' horn again and get returned to the original island platform again. It is very strange. Seems like a real waste of time to do it.

Adv packs seem a bit of a bummer in S:G to me.. :-| (As I am expecting the other three to be identical to their S:SA counterparts as well...)
