Well, that too, but I want to specify that attention seeking is not such a huge crime people claim it to be.
We all enjoy a little attention from people we care about (and from strangers too sometimes), yet we all dislike each other for trying to get it.
In reality, what we experience when someone tries to get attention is simple jealosy. Our reaction to it is to call them out on their attempt to "seek attention", while in reality there is nothing wrong with it. Not rationally, not ethically. There is just some negative stigma attached to the subject.

Also, what people don't seem to realize, is that they are often the ones enabling this kind of behaviour, by giving people the attention they want.

And if someone makes a topic about leaving, and is really going to leave (not like what GL did), how is bad that they want to make people aware of it? If I was leaving for good you bet I would make a topic about it. A single post wouldn't be able to cover it because it would be a big deal to me, even if people wouldn't care.

That's why people have a problem.

Most people making these topics don't leave for good, and are back within days, if they ever left in the first place. Also sometimes they blow things out of proportion, claiming that they'll commit suicide and all that other junk.

It would also make sense if you were writing a massive post (i.e. Lemming). But in the case of a certain user (who will go unnamed), they barely wrote anything, and then didn't want to say why they was leaving, which questions the reason why a topic had to be made in the first place (which btw, they either came back rather quickly, or never left in the first place).

When I need to leave for a specific reason, I just use my Guestbook to fit some sort of explanation in on the subject as well as saying in my signature that I am gone, though I don't have a problem with people making topics about it, no matter what. I never found it offensive. Though next time I need to leave I probably won't say anything, my reason being that I likely won't feel a need to. For those who struggle to leave for a while and actually go through with it, leaving without saying anything will help ye. That way, you won't have tome to find out if people will miss you much, and being missed is usually part of why some people come back early.

Starting tommorow I'll be notably less active on weekdays (totally off from nine to three) because I have to go back to dumb high school with stupid Generation Z kids. So, partial goodbye, everyone.
I hate it there, so there may be some days where I indulge in staying home, though. And I'll be at home for Giants coverage from the seventeenth to the weekend of the week it releases. Sigh... I really don't want to go back, I don't even have any proper friends there. smilie

Nah, that's fine, I get what you're trying to say, I go through it every day, my parents keep asking me to be friends with the people in my class, but they always get in trouble, and I can just most of them... They're... Sort of... Dim, to put it bluntly. It really wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the boring classes, as well, and how much homework they give us, and how pointless everything there seems.
