i was given a demo of giants last week by someone from activision.

i'm only repeating what i was told so don't hold me to this if it turns out to be different ...

he said that when using lightcore skylanders due to the way the technology works any increase in battery drain will be negligible.

he also stated that all giants portals for ps3/wii/x-box will be wired.

...What? Ok, now I'm interested in how the LC characters work. I assume that they were just - a lot of fiber optic cables, I've got a Christmas decoration that works the same way. So, I'm gonna have to assume that there is an LED in the light up parts of LC characters that works via the radio frequency that the portal uses.

That's- That's... Pretty damn good.

it was at a trade fair last tuesday in a small room with no windows, no cameras allowed and phones needed to be switched off.

i know at least one other person on this forum also attended the same fair and had a demo.

Ah, he was given a demo of it in a room, not that he was physically handed the demo.

A demo as in a demonstration, not a demo disc.

that is good news about the portals looks like i'm going to get the starter pack after all.

is the cord connected to the portal or is it detachable? I'm just wondering because I have a cat that loves to chew soft plastic.

Wired as in how the Xbox portal was wired. Meh I'm just going to use my old wireless portal.

What about the Wii U Portal?

Not looking forward to wired portals. If that turns out true I may just skip the Starter Pack.

The tablet can act as a portal of power.

Not all near field technologies are compatible and they often work on different frequencies.

Okay, but it IS possible. Especially if activision asks nicely.

If Wii U's controller is on a different frequency which is most likely given that RFID works quite differently from more sophisticated NFC, then this is a physical limitation which cannot be overcome with simple programming. An analogy is like trying to record video with a microphone.

Personally, I'd rather use the Wii U GamePad as a controller. But if the Wii U version didn't come with a Portal and used it I'd also be okay with it. I move my Portals around a lot, so having to contantly unplug and replug them would just annoy me.

I suspect that the Wii U will be like its older, simpler sibling and be wireless - but, yes, you would still need to unplug the wireless dongle if the place you were taking it to did not have one.

RFID and NFC devices have standards, and if nintendo wanted to use rfid spec stuff, their devices would use regular off the shelf chips. the skylander toys use regular rfid chips.

I have given up trying to convince people of the technical details between the two.
