Skylanders is totally different as Pokemon. o_ô
I don't know why you compare this two different franchise.
Pokemon has a Anime and Anime's are better as simply cartoons.
A Skylanders Anime like Sonic X or Kirby Right back at ya, would be nice.

What I can most certainly say Skylanders has over Pokemon is that Skylanders has taken the concept to the next level. I think most kids wish that they had real Pokemon to play and battle with, but all they can do is play with the toys. Skylanders makes it so the toys ARE the characters, making it one step closer to having real Pokemon. (Or in this case Skylanders) It's yet another example of American game developers taking that extra innovative step that the Japanese developers aren't willing to risk. I also feel it has a wider appeal since it's also really appealing to the parents who buy the characters, and is a simple enough game that parents who haven't played many games before can also play along with their kids.

With that said, I still don't feel Skylanders will be as big as Pokemon. The cost is still a big enough problem to make it not as successful in the long run. In a single Pokemon game there are hundreds of characters you can collect and grow fond of. With Skylanders you have to pay 10 dollars to get a chance to connect with ONE character, and there's no guaranteeing that you'll even like it.

Though with THAT said, I think Skylanders has been more successful in terms of the popularity of characters. From what I've seen, everyone has a completely different set of favourite characters, and there aren't really any characters I've seen to be considered the "popular" ones like Charizard or Pikachu. In that regard, I think Skylanders has been a bigger success.

I think it all comes down to if they make a TV show, and if it's good. I got into Pokemon because of the show back when it first came on, and so did a lot of other kids. If they can make a good TV show and make the Skylanders likable characters, they could be on their way to being a long term success rather than just a series that only lasts a couple games.

Though in fairness, it doesn't really matter if it becomes as big as Pokemon or not. There's room in this world for both series, and they don't really need to be compared.

However, I do believe a similar thing has been done with Pokemon. Whether it was RFID, or Near Field, something has been done.

I can't stand anime. At least my understanding of what an anime is. If you guys really think anime trump cartoons, I have two shows for ya:

The Simpsons
Family Guy

No anime comes close. But then again, I'm in the small percentage of this forum that was born when simpsons first went on air.

Glad heroic challenges are gone. Imagine doing 165 per skylander. That's 27225 challenges. No thank you.

Anime is very, very broad. Too many people seem to label anime as what they believe it is (which is whatever series they've seen), when there are many shows just like Family Guy and Simpsons in anime form. Honestly, I hate The Simpsons (Used to like it when I was a kid, but it became so overrated I grew tired of it), but I do enjoy Family Guy from time to time.
I try not to label any animated show by what country it emerged from though, as they all have advantages and disadvantages.

I don't think Skylanders will ever be as big as Pokemon, but it will certainly have a good following for many years to come.

The thing is lots of kids grew up watching pokemon but skylanders you have to worry about if you brake one of the skylandes you have to buy another one and down it all over again but with pokemon all u have to do is buy the game omce and collect evole train and battle all different kids of pokemon. And you dont have to catch all of them and with skylanders like DinoHex said you pay like 10 dollers for one skylander and you dont even know if your gonna like it. Like boomer.......waste of 10 bucks

Pokemon is always going to be bigger, especially since it holds nostalgic value to the people who don't like the newer iterations and it has more than a few side-games, a lot of which are actually pretty fun and feel like Pokemon. Skylanders is anti-nostalgia to the fake fans and so far the only side-game is a decent arcade game. Comparing both their gameplay and success is pointless.

This topic disappoints me. Oly for the reason anyone thinks in the tiniest part of there brain that Skylanders will be bigger. Pokemon has been out since 1996, skylanders has been out since 2011. Never.

Let's do a comparison!

Skylanders:

Characters at 10.00 dollars a character
70.00 dollars for the game
Never in stores

Pokemon:

30.00 dollars (the newer ones) have 600+ characters in on thing. (649 to be exact!)
Replay value
New moves, characters.
Easy to find
Don't need to spend 600+ Dollars to enjoy it!

Why not both; Why can't they both be considered great games, merchandise, and series? Why are people comparing these two genres and asking if one is better than the other? I know that I said this already but it's my opinion of these two equally great franchises:

Quote: OpalOsprey
With me, it depends on what aspect we are going over; the gameplay or collecting.

I like both games, there's just more to collect with Pokémon but a little less satisfactory. I liked Pokémon Ruby and Gold versions the best but I wish that Black/White version was longer with more extra content. Hopefully Black/White 2 will have what I expect from a good Pokémon game.

I like Skylanders almost equally but the collecting of the characters are what I find entertaining and challenging over the actual game. Game-wise, I prefer Pokémon, but collecting-wise, I prefer Skylanders because it seems more rewarding to me when I have an actual figure in my hand than a digital image.

Pokémon’s gameplay is a lot more fun and challenging for me than Skylanders. If they could only make Skylanders a longer game with more content and challenges, then I might reconsider.

Quote: OpalOsprey
They're both very different games so it's pointless comparing them to each other and claiming one is better than the other. I personally like both games equally for different reasons. I have to admit that I do like Pokemon a lot but I still appreciate Giants for its different and unique game-play style that combines visual collecting (hunting around stores for figures and enjoying them once we obtained them and display them at home) with in-game versions of these figures that connect with each other. I like Pokemon for the variety of creatures that there are to collect and for the advanced leveling, training, and abilities and finding the best techniques to achieve the best of these. So both games are equally good and entertaining in their own ways.

Pokemon is a very popular franchise the anime has been going on for like 14 or 15 seasons and has been around since 1997. I read on the Pokemon website that Pokemon is the most well know video game worldwide. Skylanders has been out for a year, isn't known all that well worldwide like pokemon and if they did have as many games as pokemon does, Activision would get so much money they would have to make up a new number!

As big as they are, pokemon and skylanders are two completely different games. Its all about interest. If you're into it, then you're into it. They both got likable characters and a big line of merchandise. Course pokemon has been out for a while so they will be big for long. Plus one is Japan and one is US. If skylanders keep up with the demands and keep the storyline somewhat interesting they will keep up with the fans. I think they should concenteate more on the game itself and not so many figures. Putting out a new batch every few months would be good with 4 or 5 figures. Its just too much for the pockets to take at once for the game and figures. Then going on a wild goose chase can be very aggravating. At least pokemon cards and toys were simple to find. It all depends how activision goes about prioity..... hmm.. think that's it.
