Now HERE is some skylanders merchandise worth buying!

They dont look good, the edges of the cards arent curved but very pointy which is annoying, and this isnt even new artwork but recycled artwork thrown on a template.

I agree. I think the game is probably going to be pretty basic too, probably just a variant of top trumps.

This game is such a Pokemon game (meaning it's like Pokemon)

It looks a bit more advanced than top trumps with the hat cards and treasure cards. It also has a gamemat to which suggests that you'll have a deck of cards and a hand of cards instead of having all of your cards in your hands ala top trumps.

While I hate Topps cards, this sounds awesome. Any news on a release date? I can't even find them advertised on their own website.

EDIT: Whats weird is that if you type Skylanders Trading Card Game into google it doesn't come up with anything related to the pic OP posted. These will probably be released at the start of the summer holidays so that the kids have something to pester their parents for or be rewarded with for doing chores.

EDIT2: I've just got an email back from the company and they said that the release date is august the 30th, way too late for a summer rush. As they are a UK based company I would assume that this the the UK date only and other places may get them earlier/later than August 30th.

This looks alright, but I'm not getting it. After spending loads on Pokemon, I need to save for Giants not on pieces of cardboard which won't be worth anything, and don't work in the game. Still, I can't say I blame Activision for it.

There's new merch coming for Giants and i can expect to see something on Nick or Cartoon Network saying:

"Watch a sneak peak of the new SKYLANDERS: GIANTS cartoon!"

Plus, Skylanders made more in the first quarter of 2012 then Angry Birds made in all of 2011.

^ I honestly don't understand the whole Angry Birds hype, I played the game and it isn't much but I'm not too much into those types of side-scrolling puzzle games let alone phone games.

1) It's cheap
2) It's easy to play and understand
3) It's addictive

Esdevium Games will supply collectable cards to retail from this September. The hit video game toy crossover phenomenon Skylanders is getting its own trading card game. Topps’ Skylanders Giants Collector Cards will arrive in September, courtesy of Esdevium Games.

There will be over 160 cards to collect including characters such as Bouncer, Tree Rex and Light Core.

“We’re delighted to be working with Topps on Skylanders”, said Esdevium sales director Steve Buckmaster. Cards are the natural addition to the Skylanders offering and kids can now trade and collect their favourite characters”.

The cards will be available in booster and starter packs at 75p and £4.99 respectively. They will launch around the back-to-school period in September – a month or so ahead of the new Skylanders Giants video game.
Skylanders has sold over 25m action figures worldwide.

To all those who say this is like pokemon.. How? @_@ . And there are very expensive cards worth hundreds of dollars so some cards arent worth nothing

If it's in Canada, I'm definitely going to try and get a complete set. They're cheap, unique, don't have an overwhelming amount of different cards to collect and, of course, they're Skylanders themed.

So are these only for the UK or will they be available in the US too?

Based on the details so far, these will 100% be available across Europe at the start of September. Now whether they will be worldwide is another matter as a distributor has not been publicly announced yet, but my money would be on yes they will be available in America at some point, maybe at a later date.

Just as a heads up, as it is partially related to the cards here, Europe gets the new skylanders books on August 2nd whereas the USA gets them sometime in September. That may give you a slight indication that you may be getting the cards a month after us but thats just my guess.

TLR Activision is an American company. You will 100% be getting the cards. FACT.

does this seem like a scam to me only? its like they just throw on random pictures onto cards. heck they should make a card for each level, a card for every enemy, no cards for skylanders as they already come with cards. a card for each arena. and some holographic variant cards. thats it, they could even make special adventure pack decks, all the enemies from that world, the main 'boss', the arena, and the level. the volcanic vault and sidekicks should come with the starter pack. pretty good idea? the skylander cards should work with the card game. tell me what you guys think.

I wish they would make more art and stop being so lazy. Seriously, it looks nice, but the only characters with more than one piece of art so far are Spyro, Trigger Happy, Pop Fizz, and Chop Chop.

Anyway...

I do plan on getting these.

I am now a little angry that there will not be a trading card game as first thought. The card count has been cut from over 200 to over 160 and now they are labelled as collector's cards and not a trading card game. The barcodes are exactly the same so the previous product has been replaced. For me this has gone from must buy to worthless. Think of them now as more like football cards. these are now worse than Top Trumps.

Thoughts?

I had a feeling the cards would only ever amount to a top trumps style game. Still interested, but we'll see.

The card cut down doesn't bother me too much. I considered the item "must have" originally because it was setting up to be like the pokemon card game, which I enjoyed when I was younger. I agree that it is still tradeable but once you have them all what are you to do with it? Open it and admire how much money you ploughed into something unplayable? The fact that they have called them collector's cards and that they have cut out 40 cards all but confirms to me that there will be no game attached to this. In addition as these have a release date on of this month, I doubt any more changes will be made to its format. These cards will be the biggest let down ever.

I guarantee that these cards will be exactly like the moshi monsters cards which topps also made. I bought these cards for my son and it has rainbow cards....puzzle cards...just like they stated for skylanders.

Def not buying. These cards should have been the standard that come with the characters.

The cards have absolutely no numbers on at all and so are just pictures of the skylanders and their name. This is why they are labelled "collector's cards" and not "trading card game". Colour me disappointed.

The images in that article could just be mock-ups of the cards. I mean why have a Starter kit with a binder and a poster that is a potential check list of the cards have no numbering system?

Mostly because I never want to waste other people's time reading a pointless and unnecessary post

I am also annoyed this isn't a TCG, both from a collector and (hopefully all going well) seller's point of view.

A TCG needs a "living" community to get together and play and a working online database of players to track tournaments, points and send rewards to players. These communities gather on a weekly basis to play friendly matches with bigger tournments hosted at set weekends. Examples in point the Leagues (Pokemon), FNM (Friday Night Magic the Gathering) and Yu-Gi-Oh (I don't know what the weekly meet ups are called).

In case you're wondering why I know so much about "pointless" card games, I have been involved with Pokemon and Magic. The setup might be a little different but it's really the same social aspect.

Back on point with these "Collector" cards. It is highly possible that Activision may (I'm guessing here I have no proof) do some Swop Shop tours.
Case in point the "Kid Icarus Uprising" cards. These cards feature pictures that when scanned by the game make the picture (weapon, monster, etc) come to live and fight. Other than that the cards are useless. Nintendo have now tacked on a section at larger official gatherings (like the 3DSXL Community Event held a few weeks ago) for collectors to come and swap cards with others.

This kind of thing would be nice if it happened to the Giants cards, but there is nothing stopping us (fans) arranging our own Swop Shops either in person or via the post.
