Just venting here:

Ordered a 3DS starter kit on eBay. It was a pretty sweet deal too: $29.00, free shipping, brand new. Dark Spyro was included, but Ignitor and Stealth Elf had been substituted with brand new Dinorang and Voodood (both of whom we needed). We don't even own a 3DS...I wanted the small portal for keeping hooded up to the computer full time for the game and Spyro's Universe.

Today I received an empty cardboard box.

Somewhere between the USPS sorting facility outside of Los Angeles and our home Post Office someone roughly cut open the cardboard box and took everything inside. Since it was squarely in the hands of the USPS at that point, you can probably guess where this imbecile works.

The seller and I are talking, and I can file claim with USPS (though no insurance was bought), Pay Pal and eBay, so I shouldn't loose the money, but the deal was SO good! Damnit!

*SIGH*

That's pretty bad. They should have better security.

I've only ever had one problem with ebay. I sold a Volcanic Vault to this guy in France. He address was unidentifiable. We sent it twice and got the same result. He's now given us a different address that we have sent it to. I have no idea if he's got it or not.

That really sucks.
My Dragon's Peak was coming from TRU, and apparently was damaged in transit, and thrown away once it got to Ohio. Not a big deal because my cousin ended up being able to save me one, but I seriously doubt that a box that big could have gotten so damaged that they actually had to throw away to contents. (Or, more than likely, someone took them)

Unless TRU mailed it in a plastic bag or something.

That really sucks. How are you sure the seller didn't send you an empty box though? Anyways, I've heard and seen this happen before with UPS/Fed Ex, especially with large packages during the holiday season, ...the workers would kick in the side of the box in order to not damage the tape, but haven't ever heard about this happening with USPS...I mean, having your packages crushed or opened, sure, but the entire contents stolen and delivered, never.

With Ebay/Paypal, it is the Seller's responsibility to get the package to you. They no longer allow the option of purchasing optional insurance. Sellers have little protection on Ebay these days. If it doesn't get fixed through USPS, you can file a claim. You will be refunded, and it will be up to the seller to fight it out with USPS/Ebay to get the money back.

the usps is slowly being flayed alive by their congressional requirement to delivery on saturdays, a huge resource sink.
it's like an independent private corporation being managed by a public system, more specifically, a small group of very old men with no proper training in any field they vote upon.

you can see where problems might arise.

The shipper (in Louisiana) didn't insure the package, so there's not much they can claim with USPS. It's certainly not the shipper's fault that someone at USPS in California stole an item.

I could get eBay/PayPal to return my money to me, but that's not fair; the seller held up their end of the bargain. Why should they take the hit to their wallet and eBay reputation (I've even left them positive feedback on the auction, not mentioning that I don't have the item).

The seller and I are in contact, and they have offered to do anything they can (including refund) so I don't have to take the loss. I just choose to work with them rather than allow eBay/PayPal to "investigate" and make arbitrary decisions we must abide by.

I'm pretty selective about who I will deal with on eBay. The seller is a VERY long time user with tons of perfect feedback.

Wow. That is terrible. I didn't realize that people needed Skylanders that badly. It make you wonder if the person who ripped open your box was on the hunt for valuables or something. Very upsetting considering how many things of value I receive through USPS... :/

You're right in saying it's not the seller's fault. They shouldn't be the ones to hold the employees of the post office's hands to get the item to you.

And I thought it was really suspicious when your Dragon's Peak ended up being thrown away, spyroflame. Especially considering how difficult it was at that time to get it. I have a feeling your item met the same fate as matthewgerber's.

You really shouldn't accuse people of stealing your stuff. I am sorry, but I see it everyday. It is the senders responsibility to choose a box strong enough to withstand shipping, to pad anything breakable, and secure it with two inch wide packaging tape. Sometimes, things just happen, that are beyond anyone's control. You, or the sender, need to file what's called a claim for loss or rifling, on www.usps.com. You will need all the package details. If for some reason your package was damaged in handling....the loose contents will have been shipped to one of the MRC's (mail recovery center's) across the US, and logged there. To say an employee would risk losing their job over a skylander is crazy. I mean seriously, I would hope if someone would do such a thing, they'd make it a bit more worth the risks involved!!! ....just my opinion.

I hate to be contrarian but I know of many documented cases where postal employees have been proven to have stolen or, even worse, simply thrown mail away as they were too lazy to deliver it.

They are not paid well and the very fact that most people don't bother reporting it allows them to get away with it.

But someone did steal my stuff.

-Box to withstand shipping? Check.
-Padding? The original starter pack package was inside the box. Check.
-2" wide packing tape? Check.
-Outer container cut open with a knife while exclusively in the hands of the USPS? Check.

I hope someone DOES lose a job over this, because if they did it once, chances are good they've done it before and will do it again if not caught. Keep in mind that this is someone who receives government-level benefits, pension, PERS and more. This is basically a government employee stealing from a citizen...oh, wait! Nevermind! Nothing new here after all I guess!

^filing that claim, directs the postal inspectors to "focus" on the path your box travelled. You need to report that it was cut open...and not just "damaged in handling". Someone will get caught, eventually...and I agree, should be fired...for stealing. It is unacceptable. As I am sure you assumed, I work for the post office. I sort mail and also wait on customers on the front counter. All I meant was, you wouldn't believe the stuff people present to me for shipping....labels barely attached, sealed with half a roll of scotch tape...breakable items rolling around in a box. I never accept anything that doesn't meet MY standards, as I know there is a person on the other end, such as yourself....waiting to receive their parcel, in the same condition it was mailed in. Unfortunately, a lot of times, I feel like I care more about the packages than the person shipping it. Please take the time to file that report, and even contact your local postmaster as well. The mail carrier should not have delivered it without some sort of marking...like "received w/out contents" or "received in damaged condition". I don't like to hear of stuff like this happening...it's not good.

911 is for emergencies only; you can readily contact your local police station without using 911.

That said, the first thing they will ask is if you registered the issue with USPS.

I'm gonna have to agree with some of the other posters here, and say you should really file a claime with USPS. If you got the box and nothing in it, its their responsability to right this wrong.

I've never had this happen myself, and I've been doing business (both seller AND buyer) for over 5 years on ebay. NEVER had this issue. This is just a very odd thing to have happen. Not saying its a lie on your behalf or anything, I just find it weird that someone would steal skylanders :/ Just...wow.

Yes, it was so marked from the local Post Office. It had to have happened between the sorting center in Los Angeles and here on the central coast, otherwise they would have stopped it earlier on it's journey across the country.

I'm in marketing and deal with the local Post Office often for direct mail and shipping. I'm heading right in to the Postmaster if I can. Thanks for all of your info...it's apperciated!

Now see, I read that as adding new info to your old posts rather than using a new posting, not responding individually to other user's posts. The only thing that made my multiple posts look like poor form was the lack of space between them. The time taken to hand-craft a multi-response post to multiple users would probably keep me from interacting at all. It's non-intuative and would ruin the thread of a conversation in a threaded view.

Since this is off-topic for this thread, is there an automatic way to redirect this to a suggestion or maintenance forum, or would I have to do it manually? Every forum system is different...
