I have literally used every char of the 155 char limit for signatures.

When the next chars come out, I will not be able to fit any more in without removing some.

I would like some support from the troops to encourage the sig length to be re-considered.

Of course, I am not talking about something ludicrous like 1K, just 200 chars or the like...

Maybe if they don't want to increase the number of characters, they could further abbreviate the avatars? Just one letter for most figures, for example (some will need two, obviously).

I agree. I think the database standard for a generic field of 256 characters would be fine. However I also see where this would not get approved. If we let chaos increase his siggy from 155 to say 200, AND he uses all of them, that is an increase of 45 characters PER post. How many posts you have chaos? Let's take a safe assumption of 200 posts. That is 9000 extra characters. That is around 8.5k extra data for one user. How many users are there here?

Anyway, there is more to it than just making the siggy larger. But I do agree that a db standard of 256 would not hurt much unless the site is approaching storage limits.

I don't think you understand how it works. Assuming this board runs on MySQL (which is the most common DB for sites written in PHP), the length for a single column is up to 255 characters before MySQL 5.0.3, and 65,535 after. The maximum ACTUAL length available to be stored in a single column would be determined by the maximum row size, which is 65,532bytes (i.e. the row total consists of all the columns combined).

More to the point, it's not 200 posts which would receive these extra 155 characters. Your signature is stored in the users table, under a single column probably called signature. When you make a post, the text you entered is stored in a new row in a posts table, which has an ID reference to the forum category/subcategory and ID reference to the topic ID for where you're posting.

When someone clicks into the topic and they see your post, here's what actually happened:
The PHP script grabs the posts in asc order (from the posts table), and grabs the signature for each of the posters (from the users table). The signature is then appended to the bottom of each post. There are not 9000extra characters being stored - the script READS from the database and reuses the signature across every post you make. Each time you click into the thread, the page is parsed fresh - it's not cached. That's why when you update your signature, it takes effect on EVERY post you've ever made. Forums are dynamically database driven, meaning the content itself can change and be updated very easily (i.e. edit your post OR edit your signature).

Also, this current size limitation is imposed at the point of entry - in this case the profile page where you update your signature - not the database. They would just need to update the code to allow more characters to be entered, nothing would need to be changed on the database unless they unlimited the whole thing, in which case they could use a TEXT field. But more than likely, if they do increase the signature length, they'd make it no greater than 255 OR 65,535.

^Wow that actually makes sense. So the signature is pretty much a cross reference (like autoCAD xrefs). Only way 9000 characters would be added would be if the boards had 200 new members... right?

Oh and Signed... when new wave comes out I'll have to sacrifice my brackets which means less organization in my sig... and that my friends does not appease me.

Your idea is exactly what will bring this problem. If the smileys don't count toward the limit of characters in the signature, well I really see some trolls doing a 200+ smileys signature.
