In 2003, a game called "Crash Nitro Kart" came out on the Gameboy Advance. It had about 19 playable characters, one of which was Spyro. I personally don't consider that game a Spyro game because the plot had nothing to do with Spyro, and he was only a minor character. I also don't see that game listed on this website at all.

Here comes along Skylanders Giants, and it is instantly considered a Spyro game even though there is no reason to believe that the plot will have anything to do with Spyro. As far as we know, he will only be a very minor playable character, and will make up an even smaller fraction of the total number of characters than he did in Crash Nitro Kart. I don't see why this is considered a Spyro game at all, if Crash Nitro Kart isn't.

I don't think it ever was meant to be a Spyro game. Take a look at Smash Bros. It's not a Pokemon game, it's not a Mario game, it's not a Kirby, Zelda or Metroid game.

It's a Smash Bros. game. This is a Skylanders game.

But to me, it blurs the line between what something is. Think of it as an alternate universe, or an expansion to the Spyroverse.

Who considers this as a Spyro game?

I assume this topic was made due to the fact Skylanders Giants is listed on this site. But as the front page says, this site is no longer just a Spyro fansite, but also a Skylanders fansite.

The site tagline had Skylanders along with Spyro for a while now.

...and why Crash Nitro Kart should be compared with Skylanders? It's a game from the Crash Bandicoot's franchise with Spyro making a cameo as a playable character.

I consider it a Spyro game because the gameplay has a lot of similarities.

I love Crash Nitro Cart. When I saw spyro in it, I thought that it was a mistake and only my version of the game had spyro in it.

For me it's not a Spyro game, it's a Skylanders game. It's Activision's game. LOL

Nobody is claiming this one to be a Spyro game, but as for whether or not Spyro and Skylanders are forever going to be linked in some way, the answer is, of course, yes. It's different than his one-off appearance in Crash Nitro Kart, because the figures are forwards-compatible; therefore, Spryo will be in Giants, and whether you consider it a cameo or a continuance of Spyro mythology is up to you. As far as I know, nobody has stated that this is anything other than a Skylanders game.

The fact that they're remodeling Spyro characters, and that original Skylanders characters will be able to be used, I think it is kinda a Spyro game and kinda not. I don't know though.

It's a game. I don't care if Spyro is in it or not. You can consider it whatever you want to consider it.

I think it's funny they even used Spyro at all since a lot of Spyro fans hated this game in the beginning and most of the kids buying the figs. have never heard of Spyro and Cynder outside of the game....

Exactly. I think it was more of an investors wanting a somewhat established franchise with SOME brand recognition. They didn't want Skylanders to be a completely unknown franchise. I think this franchise is great and could maybe see other franchise crossovers....maybe.

I'm pretty sure it would still do very well if it was a stand alone franchise, it nearly is a stand alone franchise.

The next game doesn't even have Spyro's name in the title, and Spyro had no individual lines in the newest trailer.

I think it's already a stand alone franchise. But hey, at least it isn't like Raving Rabbids, where Rayman and his references pretty much disappeared entirely.

It's a Spyro game or a game with Spyro. It has more classic Spyro in it as TLOS. For me was/is Skylanders more a Spyro game as the TLOS trilogy ever was.

@ bold: This shows me that you just can't take a different opinion once again, so perhaps you have a problem? I actually think that LoS had more reference to Spyro really. Only because it seemed to be based around him more so. Skylanders isn't specifically based around him as much.

I will not get this game. I will not waste another cent of my money on a skylanders game ever again. Other people can if they want. This will never be a real Spyro game to me. (sorry if I sound mean, this is just my opinion)

It's not a Spyro game. I never played classic Spyro but I can tell it's not really the same.

Giants is about as much a Spyro game as Diddy Kong Racing is a Conkur game.

b) Skylanders is a spin-off, and despite what Toys For Bob and Activision were initially saying, Spyro isn't the main character. The Skylanders are the main characters of this spin-off called SKYLANDERS, with Spyro's name just being in the subtitle. You don't see people crying about how Cloud wasn't the main character of Final Fantasy Fables Chocobo Tales.
c) Spyro was only able to survive the PS1 era because 3D gameplay was new and cool at the time. By today's standards the Spyro games are mediocre at best, and haven't aged well. There is a very good reason Spyro didn't stay successful and needed something to re-invent the franchise, and like it or not, Skylanders is probably the most successful thing Spyro has ever been attached to.

Now can we PLEASE stop whining about Skylanders not being a Spyro game? It isn't a Spyro game, and was never meant to be one.

I loved Crash Nitro Kart and was ecstatic to get Spyro. The only character I lack in that game is N-Trophy.

But IMO, S:SA wasn't a Spyro game either. I don't know why people think it is(LOOKING AT YOU, SPYRO WIKI).

a) Cloud is not the mascot of the Final Fantasy series.
b) Chocobos appeared well before FF7.
c) FF7 came out in 1997, Chocobo Tales came out 9 years later.

Final Fantasy Fables Chocobo games, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Theatrythm Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy Tactics, 4 Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy etc are spin-offs too, but they are still Final Fantasy games.

God,I had to read Aura's post to realize this topic is that old...Oh well. I still think this game is more of a spin-off or,like the second poster said,a bit in between a spinoff and another series completely,like SSBB. This place has so much from the old games and at the same time so little,and has the tie-in with the Classic triology as Machine of Doom confirmed - Spyro was in Avalar at the time he was recruited,long after the games. No matter how much people whine,just because this game has ties with the old ones,doesn't mean it's tainting them. It's a real Spyro game,just not on the main storyline.Just like the war between LOS,classic and Skylanders fans,this is as unecessary as it can be.

You can't compare Final Fantasy to Spyro AT ALL. Every FF has different characters and a different story.

Anyway, Yes, S:SA is not a Spyro game, just a spin-off.

Okay so here what I think Spyro is its own series and Skylanders is its own series
