This thread should serve as a place for people to recommend fanfics they really enjoyed; to find some kind of order in the huge mass of existing fanfiction, and to give due credit to some of the better creations.
I've personally read probably around 2 million words (equivalent to around 5000 book pages I guess) of Spyro-related fanfiction in the past 2 months (all of it at fanfiction.com), and I've started having something of a scale take shape in my head, so what I'd like to do here is to share it with you.
Title: Tears of an Oracle
Author: Riverstyxx (DA profile)
Basic info: Adventure/Romance, Post-DotD, SxC. 220k words. Complete.
Plot: Spyro and Cynder go about helping to rebuild Warfang and revive the dragon race by means of helping mount search parties for hiding dragon colonies. Problems ensue.
Your description: Really well and vividly written, not at all explicit in nature. I would, in a hearbeat, recommend ToaO for anyone who enjoys Spyro and reading.
Title: Residual Darkness (sequel to ToaO)
Author: Riverstyxx (DA profile)
Basic info: Adventure/Romance, Post-ToaO, SxC. 180k words and growing. Under process of being written.
Plot: Sequel to ToaO so I can't spoil much.
Your description: Even better written than ToaO if possible, so if you've read that then I won't have to bother recommending this, you'll read it regardless.
Title: Age of Heroes (trilogy, Book I, Book II, Book III)
Author: Spartan-029 (DA profile, definitely worth checking out)
Basic info: Adventure/Romance, Post-DotD, SxC. ~312k words total. Complete.
Plot: New guardians need to be chosen, and the world saved from a new threat. Hard to sum up everything that's happening.
Your description: First Spyro fanfic I read, and I enjoyed it. Kinda reminds me of the LoS trilogy in storyline progression and moods.
Title: Age of Heroes: Karma and Convexity
Author: Spartan-029 (DA profile, definitely worth checking out)
Basic info: Adventure/Friendship, prequel to AoH. 400k words. Only lacks the epilogue.
Plot: Makes more sense if you're read the AoH trilogy, but it's not necessary. The story of a chronicler dragoness Crona and a black wind dragon Certo in a world 1000 years before the incidents of LoS & AoH.
Your description: Positively an amazing story. I was turned off at first due to Spyro not being here, but now Crona and Certo are positively my favourite "couple"... It's sooo easy to lose yourself in this story; I never regret reading these 400,000 words and I might even do it again.
Title: Dark Legacy
Author: Dardarax
Basic info: Adventure/Drama/Friendship. 23 years after TLoS. SxC though they are only side characters. 180k words and growing. Under process of being written.
Plot: The story of an albino dragon named Lyrith and his endeavours as well as Spyro and Cynder's son Savron and his friends, mostly in the new dragon temple (their "school", so if you enjoyed Harry Potter there are many similar elements at play here, such as competition between students and romance trouble).
Your description: I got very involved in this story and I've already read it twice up 'till where it is now; you can really easily relate to Lyrith and some other characters. You'll find out by reading. M-rated for a reason though it's still from the milder end of that category.
Title: Give in to the Night
Author: Given-Inside
Basic info: Romance/Angst/Adventure. Post-DotD though Ignitus is still alive. SxC. 94k words. Complete.
Plot: A new danger occupies Spyro and Cynder, forcing them to travel to solve the problem, and threatening to pull Cynder back to the dark side.
Your description: Realistically and compassionately written. M-rated mainly due to detailed romance (when I say detailed I mean it). Good read, emotional.
Title: Unexpected Love
Author: Richer1992
Basic info: Romance. Post-AHT. SxE. 22k words. Complete.
Plot: Spyro has gotten older and started to notice things in a new way...
Your description: I just posted this for the sake of being SxE and not SxC, so Cynder haters won't eat me alive. I did enjoy this one though. Hard to find good SxE fics; this one has some grammatical errors but they're not disturbing. T-rated until Chapter 8, M-rated afterwards, so if you're distrubed by adult themes then I advice against reading. I know I was disturbed in my first such fic, but I quickly got over it.
Other authors to look for are Deeth Irteen, Kendell and RedDragonX, for example.

I wouldn't have spent all this time writing this post if I didn't believe you'd get anything out of reading these stories, so do give them a try. If you at all enjoy reading and good stories then it's very unlikely that you won't find yourself liking some of these.
If you do end up reading these stories, then please take time to submit reviews (constructive criticism or just praise), the authors are freely submitting their time into writing this stuff, and the least we as readers can do to return the favour is to give them pointers and encouragement. In most cases you'll even receive a personal response from the author - they appreciate it that much.
