How the dragon got the name 'Spyro' [CLOSED]

Spyro.
I wonder how Universal Interactive came up with the name 'Spyro' for the little purple dragon that they took ages to design.
Did they just put 'spy' and 'ro' together, or did they just think the name was cool?

*If there is an easy explanation or answer to this, I might as well close this topic down, like all my other ones apparently... :s*

I've never seen how they came up with the name officially, but it's probably as simple as putting an "s" in front of "pyro" (short for "pyromaniac" i.e. someone who likes to set fires).

The other popular theory of how the name came to be is that it's a misspelling of the Greek word "spira" which means "to breathe".

Never thought to much about it. as Razz said, however, I just asumed it was a play on the word Pyromaniac.

I wonder if a little digging and research could give me an answer? hmm...

I heard that 'Spyro' is meant for 'to breathe fire'.

They got it by combining "spiro" and "pyro".
"spiro" means "to breathe" in latin.
"pyro" means "fire" in greek(or the other way around).

So SSF is right.

Exactly.
On a slightly related note, I learned the word "Pyro" from "Pyromaniac".

Spiro = to breath / exhale, did you get that from me, I had it up for a while. or are you in Latin?

The name could have been a combination of Spy and Pyro. 2 names kids like.

I wonder if you can actually have that as a name to someone? LOL Imagine that, calling someone Spyro? I think it would be funny if you randomly heard it in class, everytime the teacher reads out the register, I would laugh.

I wouldn't do that to my kid. I wouldn't name him "Spyro". That would just get kids to make fun of him.

Well actually there is a name really similar to Spyro which is Špiro(read Š as SH-like in SHip)
And here in Croatia I've seen people calling Spyro as that :3 we use it as a sort of translation name for Spyro, and an actual name for people smilie
but that's probably to be from Spiro (lat for ''breathing'')

It would be quite strange is someone was called Spyro here. But, yes, I wouldn't be surprised if someone was actually called Spyro, same pronouncation and spelt the same.

There is a list of most of the names in the US based on frequency. if you put common last names with uncommon first names you get very real sounding names.

Cynder I think did come from the word 'cinder'. But isn't the word cinder...something to do with fire? Cynder doesn't breath fire.

The dictionary is your friend:

cinder: –noun
1. a partially or mostly burned piece of coal, wood, etc

They likely named her for her coloration and role as a corrupted character in ANB.

#25 Posted: 08:02:05 07/04/2011
^ That's what I always thought they named her that for. I actually quite like the way they bame their characters.

Spyro - Pyro
Cynder - for the reason stated abouve.

And Ripto was taken from the japanese spelling of Spyro having looked like 'ripto' I believe.

Spyro's name is pretty separate from any other character names in the franchise. Just look at all the other dragons in the Insomniac games: Thomas, Delbin, Ivor... The team probably did name him that because he's a little pyromaniac, but no one really knows.

Cynder and all the LoS characters, though, were very obviously named after physical traits.

Terrador = terra (earth)
Ignitus = from "ignite", which is to light a fire
Gaul = from "gall" which is impudence or effrontary
Skabb = scab
Mole Yaire = Moleyair, a famous French film
Malefor = from "malicious" or "malevolent", i.e. evil

Most of the older characters were named somewhat randomly, but the ones in LoS were generally named for obvious traits. Except Cyril. I've never been able to figure that out. smilie

That's for any Spy&Pyro origin of Spyro's name. I think it's cool and cute smilie
Pyromaniac is an obsessed man who loves setting fires. Like Pyro.
Pyro is a name of god in Sacrifice, an old PC game. He's a god of technology, modernity and fire (with fire-hair).
Ignitus should be an easy name to interpetation for anyone who played The Witcher (The Igni sign/spell) smilie

No, that's not it. Ignite is 'to set fire'. Ingnitus is a FIRE dragon. Don't think he has to do anything with spells. That is just a coincidence.

I've got another question.
Why did they make Spyro purple? Or did they have the idea of the 'purple' dragon thing Malefor talks about in DotD? (or does Ignitus say something in ANB?)

Because he was originally going to be green but he blended into the backround so they made him a purple instead...
