I think it's obnoxious to say fan-made games are bad.....I have played some amazing ones....

So have I. I know what I have seen. There are some truly amazing games, but... then there are others... um... Right.
It is, it will always be. |

Yes, yes it is. but "real" games have many categories.
EX: popular unpopular unknown and each has many subcategories EX: really good Good OK Bad Why did they make this |

Exactly. It's possible to make a good fan game provided you take classes in development. There is no need to rely on getting an obsolete engine from a developer that probably doesn't even have it anymore and wouldn't give it to you even if they did. |

Then there is the matter of getting the other stuff (art, music/sounds, ect), which is also hard. |

#58 Posted: 01:52:18 25/03/2011
Again, you can figure those things out in classes.

More specifically: //forum.darkspyro.net/spyro/viewposts.php?topic=6270 Really, when it comes to fan games we have a lot of cheifs that like to talk about making them, but few braves willing to go out and kill bears. As such I would say his chances of getting the source code are not much lower than getting proper support for making the game. I would likely help with the code for a project that showed promise in terms of getting everything else that is needed done. |

I would try to help with the game, but I don't have any experience with 3D rendering or animation. I need to take classes.

I am currently learning now to use a game engine. I write my own music, create my own maps, design my own characters. The only constraint is the amount of free time I have. and if I can get a plugin to work correctly.
I say, teach yourself. It is much faster and fun, and there is nobody to insult you if they don't like what you do. |

Sometimes, not all the times. There is more info on the web then there will ever be in a class.

Use the engine is not bad idea, imagine your game can played on all console and pc with just one engine (emulated). If i have it, i will do the same things as you.
If you use it just remember that psx: max color 24 bit vram 1 mb 360.000 polygon rendering /sec ram 2 mb Game Maker is easy to use game tool without programing skill. The script is not to hard to learn, i can learned by read the help file, we can build 3d game with it. Blender, with it we can create 3d object, animation and game, lots small button make it suck, 3ds max more easy for me. Just 1-2 day if just build 3d game, its hard to create the story, dialogue, music, i'm not artist. build 3d model is more easy if we have a good imagination (i'm not). |

kind of an old post but just my input--
a petition would never work. you'd have better luck just asking for the engine. I for one honestly believe that there's a chance they'd give it to you, it's useless to them anyways. If I remember correctly, Insomniac never had a specific game engine for Spyro. They used the game engine for Crash Bandicoot, developed by Naughty Dog (Insomniac's sister studio back in the 90's), so they could be the ones that code. I don't see anything ever getting done even if you did get it, that would take a lot of time and expertise. But having the engine would be cool anyways, for preservation (Its 3D rendering was state-of-the-art back in the day), and the new stuff is obviously way different. However, I doubt that compiled code still exists. You could have better luck trying to rip code off of a game disk, but that's beyond my tech expertise, I don't even know if that's possible.

^Nothing. The creator of the topic was just another desperate Spyro fan who won't shut up and get on with life.
There is NO WAY you will ever get their engine. 1. There's a 99% chance they won't have it. 2. Even if they did have it, they wouldn't give it to you for obvious copyright reasons. 3. You can make your OWN games with your OWN engine.

Insomniac are completly different now really, in my opinion though, Ratchet & Clank 1 did remind me of Spyro from time to time. I think that's when they started to change.

You don't need to let it go, if a person misses the Insomniac games of Spyro that much, they would always go and play it again, and never get bored, I mean, if you miss it that much. |

i don't mean let it go like that, i LOVE the original trilogy, and i play it all the time. but what i mean by let it go is that people should stop bothering insomniac about it. they probably feel pretty bad about some of the stuff people have PROBABLY said. |

Oh I understand that part of it, I don't think it will bother Insomniac that much, perhaps Ted Price, I think that most of the work force in that company has changed now, and that's why their newer games are more actiony, too much action if you ask me. It probably bothered Insomniac at first, but I doubt it will now because of how much money Ratchet and Resistance have brought in. |

if the work force has changed, i'm assuming it must be really getting on their nerves about so many classic buffs whining to them, especially if most of them didn't make the spyro games and i agree with you about the action. why can't we have just fun games anymore? |

I'd make a boss arena world and stuff. I would have a red thief that will have you enter levels and fight bosses for coins to go up in rank until you reach the final boss, Crash.

Spyro vs. Crash Bandicoot... hmmm, that would be a nice spin-off game. Speaking of which I have a great idea for anyone who has seen Epic Rap Battles of History: Spyro the Dragon vs. Sonic the Hedgehog rap battle. It would be epic. And, this whole thing has told me that Aura was TOTALLY WRONG when she tried to correct me when she said Insomniac never owned the rights to Spyro. Not impressed, Aura.

Aura is correct, Insomniac never owned the rights, it was Universal. Since Insomniac didn't have their own company at the time and had worked under Universal, meaning that anything created was copyright to Universal. In Secondary School, I used to talk to a friend about Spyro the Dragon and Lara Croft fighting, I think that would be an interesting battle. And I mean the original Spyro the Dragon, not the Legend of Spyro, or definitely not the Skylander Spyro, that didn't even exist back then. |

#94 Posted: 23:09:14 19/10/2011
I don't know... that would be pretty cool, if, and only if, Lara can't use guns. Throw in Sonic the Hedgehog and that's a battle. However, if Spyro's in a rap battle, it should be the TLOS Spyro, because the original Spyro sounded like a teenager with a cracked voice.
