I don't. And besides it won't work anyways, and wouldn't that be stealing?

you dont? Then go somewhere else because thats not stealing. Insomniac owns the first game engine for the first 3 games so it would NOT be stealing if they release it. Your one of the LOS fanboys arnt ya? Well then dont post in this topic then.

First of all, I'm a girl. Second, I'm not an LoS fangirl. And third, Insomniac wouldn't be dumb enough to release a source code and engine to desperate Spyro fans who won't leave Insomniac alone about the Spyro series.

You know Insomniac has moved on from Spyro, and they never owned the series. After years of having desperate fans bothering them about them about the Spyro series, you think Insomniac would release delicate information to fans who won't leave them alone? Obviously not..

like i said... you never know. And they must be sorry about whats happening. You know they feel something. Just look at spyro now. Its not spyro anymore i mean come on, skylanders? What is activisions problem? I hope activision goes defunct for this. Before skylanders gets released!

But Spyro's not Insomniac's responsibility anymore. You're letting your emotions over a video game get the better of you...

Now, I know I'm not generally the best of help when it comes to this kind of stuff... But...

Rage, mutch?

Anyway... Insomniac would never be so stupid to release a source code/engine for the original Spyro. They probably don't even have the original engine they used for Spyro to give out anyway. They made the R&C engine for a reason.

This is all just a little futile attempt to get Insomniac to lend their delicate information to a desperate Spyro fan so he can spread it around to others... smilie

I know right? Some fans wouldn't go as far as asking Insomniac to share their delicate 1998-2000 information on their project on Spyro to Classic Spyro fans, unless they're really really desperate...

Quit raging.

What you are trying to do is basically get Insomniac to make another Spyro game, by handing you the engine, and possibly helping you with the game. We've all said it before, and I'll say it again: Insomniac has moved on. They don't want to do any more games, and they will not give you the game engine. Besides, the engine is obsolete.

Here's what you can do: If you're still in school, try to find out if there are any technology or 3D rendering classes. If there are, take them. Then when you get to college, major in game development, and then you can make your own video games with an engine similar to Classic Spyro's. The only problem? It can't be a Spyro game, since it's breaking the law to release a game under his name, without permission from the owners of the franchise (in this case, Activision).

At this point it is likely so out dated you would be better off using some other engine.

A newer engine would also be able to run on current systems.

If you create a Spyro game and sell it with out Activision permission, it is against the copy write laws, and you can be sued.
(I imagined a little kid saying this)

On another note, depending on how the rights work out you might have to get the pulisher to give the okay to giving out the source code. Such is the case for the Age of Wonders series.

#20 Posted: 03:01:35 23/03/2011
It takes forever though. It would be much simpler to change the names and colors and sell as a different game.

Only if you plan to sell. This is just about the source code, and I suspect it would not be for sale but rather it would be free.

Unless if it's a desperate Classic Spyro fan trying to do the unthinkable that would never happen.

Yep, Aura's got the right of this one. Getting the source code is not going to happen and it would be stealing anyway. Getting through an on-line petition is outright laughable (since when have those ever gotten anything done?).

Razz is right. There have been so many petitions. Petitions to get Drummond to voice Sonic. Petitions to bring back Bionicle and lose Hero Factory. Petitions to change Skylanders Spyro's design. None of them worked. Petitions never work. Besides, for all you know, Insomniac could've tossed away the engine, or built upon it to make an engine that they use today. To take that is to steal.

It is not stealing if the owner(s) of the code agree to it, which is essencially not going to happen.

One petition that worked would be BTOOIC. It was a petition to have the option to disable buildable teleporters in Age of Wonders (Buildable Teleporters Off Option... no idea what the last two letters stand for).

---------

Source code alone will not help much, you would still need to get people to create content so it would still be almost as hard as creating a fan game.

Yes, but even if they agree to let them have the engine, to make a Spyro game and make profit is to be infringing copyrights set by Activision. And yes, I'm pretty sure this person would try to sell the game.

Ok. One petition. In general, however, they don't work.

Guys, he's ASKING for the codes and engine so he can make is own game. Because he's asking it's not stealing, and he just wants to make a game he can enjoy. Also, there's no reason they wouldn't release such old information that they're clearely not using anymore. At any rate, there's no harm in asking!
He never said he wanted to sell the game, he only wants to make a game he likes, and possibly share it for free.

Aaaaanywaaaaay... I'm not sure about using the engines and codes, as some have said they may not work being so old and all, buuut you can do some wicked things with computers if you have the skill, one such thing being emulators. You may be able to get a program that will let you make a PS1 game, then you could share it for people to download as a rom and use on thier PSX emulators.

As for the petition, they don't hurt anyone, but you may be better off asking them personally and politely. I bold that because you get nothing done by being rude. smilie

Regardless of whether you get the engines and codes or not, I encourage you to pursue this dream of making your own game, Spyro or otherwise. There's a topic in this section about just such a thing, if I recall correctly.

Well good luck with that. Dreaming can only get you so far. Acting on it gets you the rest of the way.
Lets say, IF you were to get then the only way to get then to work would be patching it to hell, or tear it apart and destroy it and rebuilding.

Petitions are flawed for all their glory, they are easier to ignore, and are really hard to get the amount of names to make.

It's not possible. Odds are they don't even have the engine anymore, and if they did, they wouldn't give it to you.

And do you know how hard it is to make a Spyro game from scratch? Like I said, take classes in game development. It's easier, and it saves you wasted time.

If you want to make a Spyro game, do like the rest of us and make it in something like game maker or unity from scratch. That's the only way that you're going to do it. Why do you feel the need that you must use the original engine and are too lazy to make your own?

Yeah, Insomniac wouldn't give a desperate Spyro fan who is like a portion of the Spyro fanbase who won't stop bothering the game developer and won't move on, an official private source engine which they possibly overwrote it with new game engines.

It is really hard to get a good 3D engine without paying. (or torrenting for that matter)

The halo engine is out there, but it costs.
There is also HL2 engine.
Modding a game is not that hard but time consuming.

Torque is out there as well, but the company is on a skeleton crew...

Again, all he has to do is take classes in game development. Then he gets a job, and he gets the money to buy a good engine. Then with what he learned, he can make a game. He does not need to have to rely on a company that may not have the engine anymore.

This is true, but it takes SKILL of which you have none.

Why would the fan base want to have another trashy Spyro fan made game. If I were going to make a game, I would either do it right or give up. Those are the 2 main options in this world.
