I have listed the elements of both Spyro and Cynder from most to least favorite:

Okay, apparently I am not the only one who thinks fear is not a good ability. I mean, it just stuns them, it doesn't actually do any damage to the enemy target (if I remember correctly).

I never played DotD! I like Spyro's ice in ANB the most of any element, but in all the others I liked just plane fire... Though earth is cool in TEN.

Shadow is my favorite element since it only takes a tap of R2 to throw even larger enemies into the air. Once they are in the air, you can grab them and air melee them.

Oh, and did you know that you can grab even ogres (the weird looking creatures with the axes) in the air (I thought only creatures that were the same size as Spyro and Cynder could be grabbed, apparently not).

Indeed. It is hardly worth the mana that it takes up, in my opinion.

yeah how r u supposed to get the master of fear achievement when you cn't cause the attack sucks

However, if you are being swarmed by enemies, I suppose it would help some by distracting the other enemies for a little while so you can focus your attacks on the enemy you're fighting.

I have no idea, I really don't remember using the breaths too much.

So, to instead cover AHT and ETD to contribute some sort of list;

-Electricity. It has a good range, has nice stun, can zap metal boxes apart and can get enemies from underwater.
-Fire. A quick death for times in a pinch, as well as the basic breath to do everything that doesn't need specialist tools.
-Ice. While it's mostly for novelty value, it did have some use in Molten Mount (for the fire enemies) and Dark Mine (to freeze those vents). Plus, it was funny to see the baby dragons frozen.
-Water. Seriously, it was fair enough in ETD for catching the flies, but did it NEED to be brought back when Ice did everything it could have done?!

And now for my proper assessment;

Spyro;
1. Fire. A general attack with a great range, much better than his fire in other games.
2. Electricity. Terribly nerfed since AHT, with less range and attack power, but it still has it's uses.
?. Earth.
?. Ice. I haven't found any situation where I'd want to use these.

Cynder;
1. Fear. You lot must be doing something wrong because fear is the greatest element in the game! Good range, decent damage and a great staller too.
2. Wind. Not used it as much as fear, but it's practical.
3. Poison. Does okay damage...if it can hit.
4. Shadow. Oh look, all it does is go under certain doors, yippee. The whole thing about holding enemies in the air is useless to me as I can't do air melee to save my life.

Spyro:
1) Fire. Because it's been his element since the very first game. It's always been my fave element out of all 8 breaths. It's just a general, awesome breath.
2) Ice. I just love ice and snow. Mainly things that have to do with the cold temperature. Although, I don't really like the cold all that much myself.... I used to love breathing ice on those Rynorcs in Frozen Altars while they're mooning you. xD
3) Electricity. It's a cool element. However, it's terrible in TLOS.
4) Water. It's a pointless element, however, it's better than Earth and Bubble. Bubble was just stupid, and Earth... I honestly don't understand Earth breath in TLOS. I mean, what is it?! It just seems to be a green beam. I when I first discovered that Spyro learns Earth breath in ANB, I thought he was going to spit out rocks or something. And I found the Earth Ball in DOTD pointless, and I hardly used it.

Cynder:
1) Fear. It's useful. You paralyze all of your enemies so you can attack them all. It keeps the enemies back, so you're not smashing that circle button as often.
2) Poison. I'm not to fond of blobs of poison shooting out of Cynder's mouth. It just seems a little useless, and it's not as badass as Fire and Fear. However, I love it's secondary attack. It has the best secondary out of all the games, only losing to Comet Dash.
3) Shadow. It's cool an all, and makes the enemies attack each other. But when you send them high into the air, I find it very hard to air melee them, because I'm not that good with attacking in the air. I find myself missing all my attacks half of the time. Sinking into the ground? Meh. Fire breath is cooler.
4) Wind. I only find it useful when I want to do a big combo.

Spyro

• Ice- God, Ice is useful. In the classics it was really useful to freeze enemies and all and has effect on tons of them. In the Legend series, it's good against practically any enemy, and kills the Elite Wyvern within just a few seconds at maximum upgrade... And using the power booster within it unleashes hell on your enemies. As well as this, it has a good manner conservation rating, and outside of DoTD the moves can be used very strategically.
  
• Electricity- Pretty in the classics and powerful in the Legends. 'Nuff said.
  
• Fire- Has awesome effects and, of course, it's classic.
  
• Earth- While this is an awesome element and the guardian rocks, not only has it been around only since the Legend games, I rarely used it and its attacks were horrible in DoTD.
  
• Bubble- As useless as Water breath, but at least it was used as part of the game... WAY more often.
  
• Water- Does this really need an explanation?

Cynder

• Wind- I absolutely LOVE♥ wind's secondary attack. The first is useless and the secondary uses your Mana QUICK, but it's worth it- This builds up your fury incredibly fast when pulled off right and is perfect for killing a few small enemies or getting high combos. My only grunt is that it isn't as great in the DS version.
  
• Fear- Useful, practical, good in all versions, and stuns enemies. Not as epic as Wind, though.
  
• Shadow- Not a big fan, I actually found the DS attack of this element *slightly* better.
  
• Poison- Useless, horrible, not very cool and only good for keeping enemies affected.
