I thought he was some sort of evil shadow spirit or a big, huge, GIGANTIC purple dragon... (He was the purple dragon but heaps smaller!)

actually thats what i thought. I heard lots about malefor and knew he was a dragon. But when i looked at the DOTD screenshots on spyro's lair i saw the golem. And i was like ''is that malefor? was i wrong about him being a dragon?'' LOL smilie
