Was that patched in, or always supposed to be like that? Everytime I ever play I always turn the brightness up to the point where I don't even need torches underground.

According to the wiki, it was added in the third pre-release for 1.16. I tested it out, it only helps visibility a little bit, but still better than without fire resistance. Without it you practically have to be touching a block to see it under lava.

Hey guys, if you ever have a bad day at work, just remember you didn’t cause the spill of a biological hazard in an expensive machine that was literally repaired that day, potentially infecting it with a pathogen that’s currently the cause of the largest pandemic in over 100 years.

You also didn’t cause the laboratory to shut down for an hour prompting a call to the state public health department’s head doctor who instructed you to go down to the basement, take your possibly infectious clothes off, take a shower and wear baggy scrubs. All whilst the rest of your team stands around and starts talking behind your back which you know they’ll do because you’ve seen them do it before. Also, you don’t have to wait for a call telling you if any of the specimens you spilt are positive for the aforementioned pathogen, and if any one of them are, you’ll have to quarantine for the next fortnight.

And finally, you didn’t do all of this whilst wearing a Vault Boy shirt with the caption “I’m SPECIAL”
