watched smoke signals last night!

i liked it and might actually want to try watching it again (which is pretty rare for me)

one of the plot points in the film is about a dad who abandons his family. i appreciated that while the characters were able to learn about some of the good things he did, he ultimately didn't get redeemed.

the suicide squad. It's honestly one of the best modern superhero movies because of how much of it was just fun comic fun. the characters were all amazing and likable with
rat-catcher 2
being my favorite. I really hope dc can make more movies like this on as they get more experimental with what their directors can do because rn marvel is kinda lacking with creativity

On The Silver Globe. 3 hour unfinished scifi movie from Poland that doesn't even feel real in my memory after watching it. I'd say it's good? I'll admit I wasn't super invested in its vision or themes, and I don't think I'd have anything interesting to say about it, but I definitely got a lot of enjoyment out of the movie. Appreciate being able to watch something on its scale that's just totally out of the left field (in a creative sense).

Dear lord, I laughed throughout the whole movie. Norm Macdonald had such an amazing comedic understanding which will never be replicated again. Truly a once ever comedian he was.

ah, yes. a nonlinear narrative. just my style. might want to go back and watch it again some time. i like how different film genres are combined in it. an interesting lgbt film, but i'm not sure how much i can comment on representation in it bc it covers identities within the paradigm of 60's lgbt culture in japan, and i'm not super familiar with that.

Best in Show - extremely funny and highly recommend. I didn't know most of it was improvised until after looking it up, they did a pretty good job with that.

Money Talks and Rush Hour 2 - Both pretty entertaining. I vaguely remember watching the latter in theatres years ago, still pretty fun.

Rewatching House on Haunted Hill. It'sssss just as meh as I remembered.

Over the past few months i’ve watched nearly every disney animated classic and every direct to video/dvd sequel (yes, including half a dozen winnie the pooh movies). I only need to watch raya and the last dragon. i’ve made a tier list, but the f tiers are pretty barren. should i watch the remakes to fix that?

I’ll post the tier list when its finished

interesting. a little too fast paced for me, but then again i was watching it while working on something, so i'm not one to talk. i liked the way they were able to experiment with the animation style. hope to see more mainstream films like that in the future

watched turbo kid. idk why but i recently got into gorey cheesey 80 love letters and it was quite enjoyable. the music was very nice and the plot moved pretty well. all the gore was practical and were quite impressive. i got invested into the character apple pretty easily and the over the top action mixed with slapstick humor was fun. The two main leads dynamic was very sweet. a good movie to turn your brain off to.

yeah it was just kind of meh, but it was cute! i remember when the poster for it was leaked. was right when i started using ds. the sonic movie topic where we dunked on his weird original designs is a good memory. i'm happy with the final design of sonic -- it' a much more appealing design -- but i won't lie, i'd have had a little more fun with the movie if he looked horrendous. but that's mostly because i usually like weird/horrible things

Earwig and the Witch

It was meh. The fact that it's a CGI film by a company known for traditional animation never bothered me, but it didn't really feel like a Ghibli film either way. What I didn't like was that it ends abruptly just as the plot gets interesting.

watched the first half of spirited away. i've seen it many many times, so i don't feel like i'm missing anything by not watching the whole thing.

i kind of understand a little better why there are people who think it's a strange movie. i think mostly because now that i'm an adult, i've been exposed to more people with different backgrounds. i've been watching this film since i was very young, so i accepted everything about it, but i think it makes sense that people who haven't had that experience and don't have the cultural context for the movie will be confused.

is it still annoying when they're assholes about it? yes

the ghibli "fandom" scares me

hey what a good point in that post spirited away has been a top 1 favorite movie for me since i was younger japanese culture was never a problem for me haha i think if other people wouldnt be so narrow minded about other peoples culture they could understand this stuff better or rather i mean more open to it without it having to be a criticism rather than accepting hm maybe i need to do some reasearch there are things i do not know

im actually not at all familiar with the western ghibli fanbase the japanese one has never seemed too bad to me are they crazy

my last movie was probably kimi no no wa because im still hooked on that one and cannot wait for shinkais new film to add it to my most recently watched list

oh yeah most of the ghibi fans i've run into are into it because they think it makes them "quirky" and "unique" and have no understanding of film analysis. you're right, it's probably bc the most outspoken ghibli-watchers i know are westerners who think watching a film not made by hollywood makes them special. like think annoying hipster. i'm not sure how it is in different areas.

they buy all the AeSThEtiC ghibli merch and don't really take the time to think about the messages in any of the films. or, if they do, they're cis/het/white men who watched a youtube video about a movie and think mentioning that many ghibli films have FEMALE protagonists automatically makes them ultra feminists

although i suppose saying this also makes me just like them... like, based on my background, there's no way i'm going to understand everything about a film. i'm not the director and i didn't work on it.

funny cause for japanese its like opposite of quirky and unique thats standard like disney you probably saw it as a kid if you were into animation at all "annoying hipster" sounds about right to me in my experience of them.

you have no idea how hard i laughed at this line exactly gotta love it when men (and so commonly cis/het/white men) perform a basic function such as acknowledging something about a female makes them think they are these pro extreme feminist GIRL POWER type

nah you even acknowledge they exist and dont make excuses even people who maybe dont fall into that category directly themselves will often still make an attempt at excusing the behavior or find it sympathetic in some way which you dont seem to

Last night in soho. Wow first half was sick as it was a girl romanticizing the 60s but than realizing how bad the 60s actually were for women. The horror elements tho were pretty bad with the cgi not being the greatest and really could have been left out or practical. The climax was also pretty bad and kinda made the theme of the movie irrelevant. Eh maybe on a rewatch I would enjoy it more.

Fear Street 1994: I liked it. Felt like a classic slasher film but there was one death in particular that I loved because of how insane it was. Characters idk how to feel tbh. Didn't really care for the main girl and the supporting cast were kinda uninteresting because they weren't very dimensional but had a personality at least? But that's kinda the norm for slashers. Feel like it can get better I. The other movies.also that sex scene sucked

Fear Street part 2: major improvement. The characters are actually written to be characters with flaws and personalities. The gore was sick in this and people getting murdered actually gets reactions. Best on of the trilogy

Fear Street part 3: accents can get super distracting. More enjoyable than the first movie but not as good as the second. Probably because it was less horror and more witch burny. Second half was pretty meh tbh

Thor love and thunder: uhh it was kinda boring. The main villain didn't feel threatening at all because he doesn't do anything threatening. There's a subplot with children that is uninteresting because I have never seen these kids before this movie not will I ever think about them after. Thor himself feels like he's losr his character traits from the past few movies he was in. Jane and thor still feel like a boring relationship from the first movie.
