You have to upload it to an image hosting site such as Tumblr or deviantART (I use deviantART) and copy the link of the image once it has been uploaded. Once the link has been copied, paste it into your comment. Highlight the pasted link and click on the picture of the tree in the comment box. Post the comment and it should show.

^ You save the image you want to use as your avatar. It has to be 100x100 or less and 30 KB or less. Once saved you go to settings, under select an avatar click on Browse, search for the image you saved that you'd like to use as an avatar and click okay. Click Submit at the bottom of the page and it'll change the next time you refresh your page.
