Chapter 39, The End of the Fireworks Show

Rufus called everyone together and thanked them for coming, shortly after sling them to clean up. The job was done... Strangely. Most days before the Swappers would've just left. But now... Things had changed.

The large crowd, every single Skylander there, stood solemnly as they waited for Eon to speak. The great Portal Master had decided that the day after the party, the funeral was needed. A Skylander had never died before... It was believed impossible, even. But all that changed when Kaos attacked. For the 4th time. Jet Vac looked at Free Ranger with a pang of guilt. "I-I'm sorry." "..." Jet sighed. It was no use anyways... Soon a echoing voice spread through the land, unmediated grabbing everyone's attention.

"Skylanders. Today is a dark day. We have lost a most brave Skylander of ours. This is a day I hoped would never come. We are gathered here to pay our respects to Boom Jet, a loyal Skylander of the Air Element. He, along with his teammates, all of you, has helped protect Skylands for many many years. He will always remain in our memory, as well as the memories of everyone in Skylands. He will always be remembered- as a true hero."

Eon bowed his head, just as upset as the rest of the group.

"Eon, if I may."
"Go on."
"Everyone!!"

Free Ranger stood up, lifting himself higher than the crowd.

"Boom Jet wasn't just a hero... He was a friend too. He was just like all of us."

He turned to Eon, sadness glinting in his eyes, but now he felt a new pride, a new courage.

"Let's remember him for who who truly was! A hero, a friend, a teammate, someone who you could always count on to brag about every little thing."

He smiled sadly, losing his words. He settled down again after bowing his head to Eon.

"Who's gonna be the next Air Swap-Force?"

A voice rang out. "It'll be addressed later, don't worry." Jet Vac tried to laugh, but couldn't. Scratch laid her head on Camo's shoulder. "I never thought..." She trailed off, visibly stunned. The group was met with an eerie silence. Everyone wanted to try and be happy, but couldn't; it was wrong. They wanted to leave the sad place, run away from the news but felt stuck. Sniffles were heard in the stunned stillness. The wind was unmoving and felt stale. Not a bird chirped. No leaves rustled. Skylands itself seems to be mourning the loss. Posters were stapled everywhere, covering every building, sidewalk, and balloon, like a advertisement for a cheap product, one that desperately needed to sell an was on every commercial, everywhere.

The posters were for auditions for the next Air Skylander, although everyone knew the role would never be fulfilled. Even when Eon would choose more Skylanders, Air would be forever one short. "Nice job out there." Blast Zone chose words carefully, a sad smile on his face. "Thanks." Free mirrored his look. "It still feels so foreign, like a dream. This couldn't have happened... Out there, he's alive... I can feel it like a storm coming up." "There is a storm coming up. But I know what you mean..." Blast Zone looked at the clouds, a storm apparent. A glimmer of hope sparked in Free. His best friend, his teammate, was out there, alive.

He knew it.

I usually just write the story out mentally, plan adjectives that pop, scenes I think I want to add. Maybe I should write things down with my memory, Lawl. I dunno... Chapter 40, Slowing Down at Last

Back at the Mainland, all was quiet. The citizens of Stonetown had left many days prior to the Swap-Force's return, and now some Skylanders had headed back to protect the Core, Eon forbidding anything might happen. They had stayed at Woodburrow, highly anticipating their return, and having to stay longer because of the Funeral... Although the team's feet dragged as they walked home to Woodburrow. Free Ranger, however, although upset, had a new disposition. He seemed more hopeful, less depressed. The others in turn brightened up slightly, seeing that he was better after the funeral, although they had no clue why, or how.

Freeze Blade swayed side-to-side, not as much heart in his skating as the team dragged on towards Woodburrow. "Hey, you okay?" He looked up at the storm chicken. "A better question is are you okay?!" His head turned to the side. "I'm fine, but seriously. You?" Free Ranger assured. "Huh? Oh yeah, I'm totally fine, ha!" He picked up his pace. The chicken stared, an eye narrowed slightly at his friend's confusing actions, but he said no more. "Blast Zone!" Free called, beckoning him over. "Yes?" He seemed almost worried at Free's... Well, not as depressed as he once was-ness? Ah well. "What do we have to do once we get back?" "N-nothing." Blast Zone blinked. It was strange, the storm-chaser seemed almost fine. "Okay, thanks!" He strode ahead of the group. 'I'm not upset, scared, or anything. None of that. Boom's still alive, and that's a fact. I've never felt so strongly about something in my life. So why grieve? He'll be back, someday.'

"What took you all so long?" Cynder snapped, clattering her claws on the ground impatiently. "It's not like we have anything to do." Grilla Drilla countered. "We're not the ones going back to the Mainland. Get along now! Can't be late!" Grilla taunted, dodging the lightning shot at him. The dragoness scowled, turning tail sassily. "I'm not missing some of them." Grilla snorted as the Skylanders gave some last words to the Swap Force. "They take shifts..." Spy Rise but into the conversation. "Um, not the best ti-" Doom Stone tried to save his friend, but he was cut off. "Say WHAAAAAAT??" "AIIEEE!!" Spy Rise skittered away on all of his many legs, trying to avoid the gorilla's wrath. "It's okay Grilla... Use your deep breathing techniques... In... Out..." Rubble Rouser tried to pacify his friend, and miraculously it worked after awhile. "Hey Freeze!" Roller Blade raced up to the cat. "I've got one of the first shift, but I'll be practicing for a rematch later, okay?" "Come on guys, we gotta go!" Spyro called to a half of the group who were still mingling, trying not to laugh as he listened to various jokes and puns about the new shift system and Night Shift. "Gotta go, that's me! See you soon!" She flew away, skating so fast she almost crashed into Zap. "Haha, okay..." Freeze trailed off, a stupid looking smile on his face. The rest said their goodbyes, and the group staying at Woodburrow waved to their leaving teammates.

"Glad that's finally over!" "Shh, shh, keep breathin-" "SHUT UP!!" "Man, he's insane!" Spy Rise stood wide eyed. "Naw, he's just got stress problems. You see, back when he was at wait where are you going?!" Doom Stone called as the Tech Swapper ran away. Doom Stone sighed. "I believe a fitter word, or should I say, a fitter phrase, or words, whatever tickles your fancy, might be that he is 'non compos mentis.'" Magna Charge wheeled over. "Oh no..." Doom Stone sighed louder. "Waaaaaait, is that a..." "A phone?" Magna nodded virgously. "Yep, it's a phone. It's not mine, someone dropped it. You can hold on to it, if you'd like. Once the shifts change again I plan on seeing if someone dropped it or something." "MINEMINEMINE YESSSSSS!" He snatched the phone and darted away, as speedy as possible. "Um?" He shook his head. "Oh well then." He laughed to himself.

But I have gotten over my block, and I hope to give this a good few more chaps before it's over because inspiration~ struck and now I've got ideas! They will be slower, but will set the scene, if you're picking up what I'm putting down. But first... A HUGE thanks to you all... This wouldn't be here without ya'... Chapter 41, Picking back up... In the Haze of Battle...


He smirked as he plodded over, purposely taking his time, to his adversary. Snow caught his steps, making his trip longer... And more painful for his enemy. The dragon scrabbled at the cliff as though it was all an act. He didn't care, in fact he reflected the smirk on his opponent's face. He knew he wouldn't win. And as the pirate got nearer, his smile only got larger, and he shot a challenging glance. He had nothing to lose, nothing to gain. Why not make things interesting? Soon tentacles were even with his claws. The dragon looked up. "You want to make this quick?" "Nah..." The pirate flipped his bubble gun in his hand. "Let's have some fun." He abruptly lurched down, his sword at the dragon's neck. "Nice move." The dragon snarled, suddenly serious. "Go ahead, you couldn't." The pirate saw a red haze, and his eyes narrowed. "What did you say?" He sneered, laughing. "Fine, I can easily make this quick. Saves me the time." "Then do it." And he did. One swift motion was all it took.



Wash Buckler looked his enemy, now dead, over. His eyes were still narrowed, and he was tense as though at any second another opponent would appear. Snow fell, thick and lazily swirling downwards. The peak was already covered with it...



and it was only growing deeper, dusting Dark Spyro's limp body.



Then world went black, and jagged red peaks shot up. He flailed, but his efforts were in wain as he slipped closer and closer to the edge. He couldn't see anything other than the red, distant peaks and the gleaming evil eyes everywhere... Then suddenly, he was falling. He felt something bump into him, and realized that it was Dark Spyro, with his wings spread, tearing the wind around him. Then compete darkness. Voices... They called him, congratulated him, scorned him. They grew louder, louder, and louder, until he thought he couldn't



"AHHHH!!" Wash Buckler screamed, heart racing. He ran out of the Great Hollow, where the Swap Fire were all sound asleep. He stumbled into the main clearing, breathing hard. He put his hands on his head. 'Every night I get these dreams... Why won't they go away?? No matter what I do!!' He slumped down onto the ground, and sighed. He felt trapped... And come to think of it, these dreams had been recent only... 'Are they a sign? ... Nah, can't be. I'm just losin' it.' A skinny elf hung upside down in front of his face, rousing him from his thoughts. He jumped, startled. "Something on your mind?" Stealth Elf queried, although she already knew the answer. "Not at all. Just up for a midnight stroll is all, heheh." Wash lied. He wished he wasn't such a bad liar sometimes. Stealth Elf's ear twitched, and she have him a look. "Another dream?" She tried to nudge him in the right direction. Wash stared in surprise. "Y-you know?" "You're not the only one with the darkness inside of you, you know." She muttered, seeming slightly annoyed. "I-I..." He stuttered. She sighed, then flipped off of her branch, sticking the landing perfectly and silently. "The darkness. It's not gone." "How? We... Well..." "That doesn't mean it's gone!" She looked away, irritated with his apparent naïveté. "The darkness will always be there. And now, it's in us. I'm sure others as well..." She cut off as Blast Zone appeared next to her. His eyes were wide, and told both Wash and Stealth that he had had the same problems. "Bit of advice? Sleeping during the day. The darkness can't get you then." Wash nodded a thanks, but soon stopped, confused. "How do you know all of this?" He asked. "Have you been like this a long time?" Quietly he added: "What were your dreams about?" A flash of uncertainty flew across her face. "I don't live in fear. I fight it. And thus, I've found ways to help it." Stealth's voice had a bit of a warning sting. "I've been like this as long as you have. I just handle it better." She added, lifting her a head, causing Wash to scowl at her. "My dreams? You wouldn't want to know..." "Oh. Well then." He tuned away, annoyed and offended by her. "Thanks for the advice Stealth!" Her face was unchanging. "You don't need to thank me. It's what we all need- to work together." Blast looked take aback. To Wash, she said: "So you can take my advice. Or ignore it. But three minds are better than one. So stop being stupid and take my... 'Offer.'" She began walking away, but soon stopped and whispered something Wash Buckler didn't catch. "I'm sorry about what I did to Freeze... I..." she sniffed, and began walking faster until Blast Zone caught up. "I heard what you said... And I won't tell anyone. But just know that it's not your fault..." He tried to give a smile. "Hmph." She snorted, then ran off to one of the hollows of Woodburrow where some of the Skylanders were sleeping. "Well, she's a character." Blast Zone said to no one in particular, turning back to get Wash and head back to the hollow for the Swap Force. Little did they know of Hoot Loop watching their entire conversation, hidden in the darkness with only his wand flickering a faint purple. "I guess we all have our little secrets..." He murmured, his eyes taking on a strange glow.
