Chapter 10

Cynder and I were flying back to the dojo where Terrador wanted to speak to us. He had told us it was urgent. Cynder looked at me and was obviously worried about something. I raised my eyebrow. "What's wrong?" I asked.

"Nothing," Cynder sighed.

"You sure?"

Cynder looked away. I wondered what was bothering her. Had I done something wrong? "Are you okay?" I asked softly.

Cynder sighed and then growled, her eyes narrowing. She flew towards me. "Just leave me alone for a while!" she snapped, turning and flying the opposite direction. I paused mid-flight, my wings just flapping now and then to keep me in the air.

"Cynder!" I called. "Cynder come back! What's wrong?!" I called. I was greeted with nothing but my echo. I sighed and continued flying without her.

Terrador padded up to me a smiled. "Ah, Spyro, you're back." There was a long pause. He looked around and then turned back to me. "Where's Cynder?"

I shook my head. "I dunno, she flew off. I think she was mad at me or something." I looked at the ground.

Terrador was silent for a moment. "I'm sure she just needed to get some fresh air. She'll be back by sunrise."

I nodded, not entirely reasured. There was another long moment of silence. I heard a crash outsite. Jumping, I realized it was just thunder. I heard rain begin to fall from the sky and hit the ground with a light tap.

Suddenly, Ember slammed into the ground, her wings torn and her body covered in blood. I knew that Terrador had sent her to contact Cyril, who had been off on some mission.

"What's wrong, Ember?" Terrador asked the dragoness. He put his paw on her shoulder.

While he was busy trying to talk to her, I realized that the heart-shaped necklace that she always wore had been cracked in half. How had that happened?

"Thousands," she gasped. "Thousands and thousands,"

"What are you talking about?" asked Terrador.

"Thousands," she repeated.

I exchanged a worried glance with Terrador. He then swallowed and called an older hatchling - one that was a vivid shade of aqua - to tend her wounds. We watched.

"What happened to her? Will she be alright?" I asked slowly.

Terrador shook his head. "I don't know, Spyro. We will do everything we can. And in the meantime, I will try to figure out who has done this... And why."

I shook fearfully. Now Cynder was gone and Ember was injured. I shook even harder - I was probably next.
