Backstory:

Erica Phoque grew up in the famous city, Lilycove. Ever since she was a little girl, she had been attending competitions in the area and learned from the best of the best. She had a pen pal named Xelandria, to which one year she sent over an Elekid she won in a Special Competition as a birthday present. Erica and her pen pal would send letters every week, every month, every year. Despite being so far way, Strider was her closest friend. However, she wasn't her only friend. Erica had friends in the Hoenn region who would pass Lilycove time from time: Sess and Lunar. They weren't exactly childhood friends, but they were perhaps the closest friends she had that lived on the region.

She eventually rose to become a world renowned contestant, showing up on TV everywhere and becoming an idol to many aspiring contestants. Especially since she always advocated towards strengthening the love and bond between a trainer and Pokemon. However, her fame seemed short lived in the eyes of many. Erica had grown a liking to battling Pokemon, and it was already her strongest suit during competitions. She decided to train with either Lunar or Sess when they passed by, or whenever she had the free time, and realized that becoming a gym leader was perhaps even a better way to teach young trainers about the connection between them and Pokemon.

So she traveled around Hoenn and other regions to help make her Pokemon stronger. She walked paths with many friends, including Lunar, Sess, and finally Strider. Erica's longest companionship on her journey was with Strider, and together they sought to rose to the top. Sadly Erica believed that while her Pokemon could become stronger, their passion lied with competitions. They simply weren't performing well the more advanced she went. So she went back home, and became a Gym Leader in a Fairy Type Gym. She still participated in competitions as well, covering grounds on young trainers and teaching them the life lessons she had learned and is still learning.
