In a way, yes although that statement is oversimplifying the issue.
I would say "Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence."

That philosophy is extremely self-destructive, where would the world go if everyone believed everything they're told?
If you don't ask for evidence, specially for outrageous claims (There was once a god-man who died and came back to life. He is now in heaven with his father who is also he.), how would you differentiate what's true and what's false. |

That´s not what I would call evidence... When did this happen? Where did this happen? What kind of people saw it? Where it told by mouth or written down?

I want to give you guys a piece of philosophy.
Philosophy started as a way of reasoning out things, explaining them so that others can agree. Thousands of years ago, there were no dictionaries, and everyone just kind of went with the flow to learn things. The problem with this was that is was very easy to disagree on the special subjects. By special, I mean the ones you can't touch. Like happiness. Virtue. Purpose. Meaning. Philosophy was born to make definitions of such things, so that everybody could agree. Two thousand years, and philosophy is still working on it. Philosophy gave birth to science. Science did things even more thoroughly, so as not to leave any doubt. But this means one important thing: its reach is even more limited than that of philosophy. Science's purpose isn't to find out what exists and not. It is to find out as much as can be found out. Then science hands over the rest to philosophy. Philosophy does its part to fill in the gaps, but where philosophy can't make sense of things either, the remainder is left where it's been these two thousand years: in ambiguity. The modern world, however, loves science so much that the radical attitude of scientism is very wide-spread. Scientism (not scientology) is the belief that what science can't touch, doesn't exist. This is not a neutral or objective belief. Quote: torok
"In love, your enemy is your greatest teacher." Hatred is an evil, even when it is hatred towards evil. Hate things if you want to, but do not hate for the sake of good. Then you've misunderstood the message. And I think it's selfish because faith alone does not require good. I do not want to go to heaven if I do not deserve it. That'd be cheating. Since I'm no good judge of my own actions, I don't think I should be the one to decide whether I go to heaven or not. I think it should sound like this: "Do your best, and you just might go to heaven!"

So there are no other elements? Dark matter doesn't exist? We know everything to do with the brain? How big is a giant squid? Why does a bumble bee fly? Do we know everything? |

That's not the case at all! Science simply doesn't acknowledge what it cannot prove. It doesn't reject it with absolute certainty. Absolute certainty is something characteristic for religion. Quote: Cerapter

Yay. I'm not the only one!! Dark matter must be real, otherwise it doesn't make sense. I'm an athiest, but I believe that there is something after death. Whether that be heaven, reincarnation, or whatever. Also, I don't understand the concept of religion. All it does is lead to war as far as I've heard. And if god was real and actually loved us, he would stop all of the pain and suffering.

Hearsay is not evidence... and neither are threats. If I tell you that you will go to Hell if you do not wear green socks and pay me 100$, would you believe me? No? Well, in that case, you are starting to see my position. |

I meant to say that if science was all there was, then there would be no science. Yes, we find things that we never knew was there. That's one of the brilliances of science. But there are also things we know are there, that science can't puzzle out.
I'm actually a physics major. And that might be exactly why I don't trust so much in science. I know what science is really like. But hey, it's not that important. I got a bit carried away because I'm taking a university level philosophy course, and I really just wanted you to share my small revelations concerning the role of science. It's still just an opinion, though. Let's give the discussion a rest, shall we? These things are often better to mull over alone.

You're rally heartless if you find the idea of someone in Hell amusing. Quote: Tango
You're trying to discredit science through extreme empiricism. You cannot claim that ALL claims that you hear are completely worthless if you cannot test them on the spot. You've seen a normal squid, you know that sea creatures can be pretty big, and there are no viable reasons for someone to trick you into believing that gigantic squids exist, when they really don't. Although you haven't seen a gigantic squid, a possibility that one exists is not unreasonable based on your prior knowledge. And although dark matter (atom, gravity, a black hole) can't be seen, its effects can be measured, it MANIFESTS in the real world. And if you wish, you can measure them whenever you want. |
