In their defence, it’s not always their fault. If you live in that kind of community, the pressure to conform to the local norms of your family/school/church/friends can be overpowering. And if you have that kind of background the religion is so entrenched that any perceived attack on the religion feels like someone is attacking your family/your community/you. A lot of time you're hearing the 'group-think' of that community, and not the opinions of that individual.
