"yeah..." Pennie said feeling her cell vibrate in her pocket. The message read ~you should have taken them cookies! ~ She sighed and put away her cell. "If a woman shows up at your houses with a plate of cookies its most likely my mom..." She said planly.

Jade cocked her head to the side and laughed. "Well, she would be most welcome," she said. After a brief pause, she asked, "What might be your name?"

"My name is Pennie... and im not a child im turning 21 soon." She said crossing her arms. Her cell vibrated again and she sighed. "I uh got to go." She said walking past them down to the park and out of sight.

Jade watched Pennie leave, then looked to her new neighbor. "I do not believe I got your name, either," she said.

Vince. A fitting name for such a handsome fellow. "You may call me Jade," she replied. She looked again at the direction the girl left in, and back at Vince. "Bit of a strange girl, if you ask me. Even though you didn't." She chuckled.

Jade simply looked at Vince, disbelieving. Could he, too, be one...? If so, it was too good to be true. Jade had never met one like herself, and yet there was an aura about this man that was indisputable... She had to find out for sure. "Come," she said without warning, "let us stop standing in the middle of the sidewalk like a couple of juvenile buffoons, yes?" Without awaiting his consent, she began meandering back toward her house.

She could not contain her excitement, try as she might. "'Another immortal'? Is it really as it seems? When you said you were Greek you were not kidding, were you? You probably walked among Plato and Socrates and Pythagoras and..." Jade took a breath and put her hands on her face.

Joannah sighed walking to the fridge pulling out a beer. She stared at it and put it back. Why is this so hard? It would be so much easier if you hadnt left... She sighed and pulled out the eggs and milk and gathered things for cookies.

Pennie got to the park and spotted her friend. She had both of their skate boards in hand. "Sweat you brought my board!" Pennie said happily. Her and her friend walked into the skate park and began skate boarding.

A grin stretched across Jade's face. "I can scarcely believe it..." She watched Vince, seeing him in a different light now. "Myself, I was in a different part of the world at that time... Admittedly I cannot remember where." She scoffed at herself. "All of my memories are consumed by the content of books..."

"As of late," she answered with a wry grin. It quickly faded, though, and she sat down on the tattered old sofa and sighed. "I will be the first to admit I do not remember my origins. Whether I am that old or my memory is that bad I cannot say." She buried her face in her hands. "It has troubled me for some time now."

"And perhaps it is for the best," Jade added, though as she said it she racked her brain, yearning for more remembrance. "But what are we though? Truly? For all the books I own, and have read, I still have not the answer to that. And my quest for such knowledge has spanned the ages..."

"So I have heard..." Jade muttered. "But it is not enough for me. I am not content with a simple "why." I want a "who" and a "when" and a "where!" And surely those answers exist."

Jade found herself staring at a tote full of ancient scrolls and shaking her head. "Our kind is older than Greece. It was, ah, your people who discovered us for what we were, but they were definitely not the first." She put a hand to her mouth and thought for a moment. "At least, I am near positive that is so. I am sure there is a tome somewhere within my archives that speaks of our kind having existed among the Mayans. Or was it the Egyptians? Ah, either way. It was older than Greece." She began to tenderly rummage through the box of scrolls she had been scrutinizing.

Joe sighed as she put the cookies in the oven and grabbed her hamburger timer and twisted it to 13 minutes. She grabbed a spiked lemonade from the fridge and walked outside sitting on the patio.

"The oldest known civilization is that of the Sumerians," she said, still searching. "And the oldest story is from that time: the epic of Gilgamesh." Jade paused in her search and looked at Vince. "But was it really just a story? Its main characters were created by the gods, and could only be killed by the gods. Just as you said."

"There are too many questions and no answers, no?" Jade sighed, not finding what she was looking for, and took a seat beside Vince. "All these ages... and yet still I know nothing about who I am. Or why I am, rather. There must be answers somewhere."

Jade mulled over that for a moment. "No doubt," she agreed. "But I'll be damned if they gave us good memories!" She made a noise halfway between a scoff and a laugh. "Anyway, whatever it was they wanted us for is long buried in the past. They've apparently nothing to do with us now." Or do they?
