I have to say I would think a large number were just profiteers. I was only in line twice and both times I had people around me that I could hear and the conversation was about free stuff, downgrades from last year (directly related to free stuff), what they'd gotten from so-and-so recently to turn (a profit) etc. For these people it wasn't about the game, liking Hot Dog, having friends or a younger family member, it was about cashing in...
While this does kind of make it hard for the general person to get one, it also makes it a total pain for the people flipping them, and I am all for that. You have to realize that all the time they spend in the line, spinning and not winning, is time they aren't covering something else, or landing other free gifts to hock online.
I was with the group that really wanted him (we didn't know at the time we would for sure get him) and while we were in line we were checking out all the figures and watching others...Quite a few like us of course, but it is easy to read people and see who isn't at all engaged in the series past knowing they can get something free and make a lot of money off of it. I think SkylanderDad filmed Jared winning.
I think they did a good thing with the setup...For those who want him it is kind of fun, although potentially time consuming for such a massive event. The staff was very professional on this one...you had checkpoints and they were policing folks to only 1 win apiece etc...I'm sure with a shift change, or next day type thing it may have some transgressors, but at least they have to burn precious minutes waiting.
I cover the basic setup on the blog and in the video within the blog post:
