I just can't see this being a success for them, based on how badly out-of-touch Disney Universe was. It was like they had no clue what people played games for, or if they did, chose to ignore it. Plastering Disney all over games hasn't been ultra successful in the past because of a general lack of polish and quality, and I doubt aping Skylanders is going to change all that.

The existing continuity of characters Disney holds would be appealing to see in a Skylander's format. This being said the system and format of the game has to be designed in well thought out manner. It could happen but is deffinately not a certainty as the brief explanation seems to lack some substance and none of the characters seem to be must owns for me specifically. However no matter what Disney does they do have an existing fanbase that will buy the first run of product. The question is if the fanbase is large enough to sustain the game if the mechanics andsystem of play fail to retain some or attract new buyers.

even though I am a bit excited, I am a bit unsure how well it'd go as Disney universe's gameplay vids didn't tickle my fancy.
.. then again... now I am not that excited.

Oh great, I can play a game as Snow White instead of a red haired mechanic that beats up monsters with an oversized wrench. Or I could play as Simba instead of a grass dragon that shoots exploding vines, spits tiny suns out of his mouth, and pummels baddies to death with giant watermelons. I could play the game that's a massive rip-off and is another shallow attempt to milk pre-existing characters that have been milked so dry they're the equivalent of cartoon raisins, or I could play the game that created the idea and continues to make new and creative characters that are made to sell a new game , and not old movies.

I think one of the commentors in that article said it best.

Or you can play a game with customizable roster of X-Men or Avengers. Changing figure or tokens changes the dynamics of the game with each charater being distinct.

Imagine if Kingdom Hearts had had this mechanism.

I think they need to get Warren Spector on this. He showed us that Disney games can be great, and a love letter to old forgotten shows/characters. (He's the guy who did Epic Mickey by the way)

Also, they have all they need to make it a great story. I mean, heck Disney is the home of wonderful storytellers. It shouldn't be too hard.

Pros for token based game:
- Cheaper for the consumer
- Easier to take somewhere else
- Promotes trading and actual interaction
- Takes up less space

Cons:
- Not a lovely looking figure (but on another note tokens can look awesome if done properly)
- Blind packs
- May end up more expensive and a lot of wasted tokens if the consumer has no access to trades.

The benefits of it being Disney is that;

- It would not die off, thanks to their mountains of cash
- Could incorporate Disney Movie Rewards
- International image
- Plenty of fun and enjoyable characters

P.S I am very, VERY excited for this.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel.
And I really like the token idea, I really don't feel like I need to have another figure set like the Skylanders series.

Tech Mickey with a wrench
Water Mickey with a hose

You would be surprised. If Disney could buy ESPN, ABC, Pixar and even Marvel and LucasFilm, then ANYTHING is possible for Disney.

Dude. Stop overreacting. It could be any time in 2013. If I had to guess, I would say next holiday season. Things will be revealed soon enough. Was Giants revealed back on 2011, the year prior to its release? No.

Activision and Disney are two seperate companies. Many games that have been announced for 2013 don't have domain names yet.

Very interesting. I've always known that another company would eventually try to copy Skylanders. I mean the whole Skylanders marketing is genius. It was only a matter of time before this had happened. Although I wished it were the Pokémon company who would steal the idea first, lol.

If they let us play with Marvel and Star Wars characters in the same game then I'll probably try it out. If anything I'll just pick up the starter pack when it drops. I've already spent way too much money on Skylanders as it is. Also it'd be nice if their "flat device" allows us to play with the packaged figures.

That is what being a good business is all about. Disney is the ONLY remaining individual film company on the planet. All of the others are a combination. Disney is in it to make money. They know what they are doing.

Just in case anyone is wondering, Disney is set to unveil the game, named "Disney Infinity" next month, according to myNintendonews.

From the link to Polygon, "According to an invitation sent to Polygon, the Jan. 15 Disney Infinity event will feature John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios and a principal creative advisor at Walt Disney Imagineering, as well as John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive.

While the invitation doesn't detail what exactly Disney Infinity is, Disney fansite Stitch Kingdom reported last month that the project was initially codenamed Toy Box."

Sleepy will finally get his undies untwisted: Polygon has given us our first official concept art for the game, as well as a few in game screenshots. And in one word, Holy Pixar, Batman!







Looks like the characters will have a semi-chibi mini style to them, which is pretty cool. Right off the bat I see Cars, Incredibles, Monsters Inc, Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, Frankenweenie and Wreck-It Ralph universes represented. Actually really surprising to me ....not even Mickey?

Unlike Skylanders though, there doesn't appear to be a "plot" in this game at all, you're basically just dumped into the word and allowed to do whatever you want. (According to the videos Polygon received, there's a few "modes" which you can play as well. Seems that there's specific things characters can do, like ride mounts,

sign me up!

As awesome as this looks, if there is no actual plot to it then I will probably have to pass on it. At least Disney Universe had a plot. if the entire game is just one big sandbox mode, then no thank you.

The characters do look awesome though, but what is this, like the Pirates of the Caribbean and Pixar show? I heard that Phineas and Ferb were gonna be in it too, but where are all the classic Disney characters? Not even Mickey!

As of RIGHT NOW, this is definitely NOT going to be any competition for Skylanders. Calling it now. I want to see Nintendo's Pokemon version, which will be competition for sure.

Sleepy I don't think they're going to copy Skylanders that far o_e If there would be physical representations of the characters, they would have atleast had a demo to let them try it out.
