The fanbase does not change my opinion of a game anymore, simply because, well.....gamers these days(this includes all of us at times) are spoiled, and are complete ****s, sometimes to each other, and it doesn't matter which "fanbase" you go to. We have this feeling of "entitlement", and that seeing as we bought a game, it should be EXACTLY how we IMAGINED it to be. Otherwise, we feel like we didn't get our money's worth. Some gamers go so far with their ****ishness, that they interfere with the development of games (take that one Minecraft scandal as an example).
There are also some of us who hate change of any sort. And no, I'm not even referring to Anti-LoS fans here, as I understand that those were different enough from the Classics to be considered unrelated (though I do frown at the people who knew exactly what was going to change before playing LoS, knew that it would be an action-oriented game, and then went on to say "durrhurr I dun liek et coz i haet action gaemz".....seriously, that's like me buying an FPS, knowing that I have a slight distaste for that kind of game, and then complaining about how I didn't like it because it was an FPS. I have come to expect boring drab from FPS games, therefore, I don't play many.....and don't give me the "they got it because it had Spyro's name on the box" excuse.....that doesn't cut it with me...). What I'm really talking about is the sort of people who complained at the EVER SO SLIGHTLY different physics in Sonic 4. The people who complained about an OPTIONAL Homing Attack move in Sonic 4.....
So yeah, nowadays, I have come to expect rowdy fanbases, no matter what the fanbase is of, but especially if the game franchise started in the 90s or earlier, simply because those fanbases can be full of old farts who don't want their little box tampered with, if you know what I mean. You might as well not have an interest in any long running game series if you are prone to have your love for a game tampered with by it's fanbase, and you should be wary as soon as a sequel is announced for a new IP.
