here's what i've gathered from the whole team ordeal

valor: possibly the most popular one, has quite possibly one of the most retarded patriotic members i have ever seen in a video game. most prone to play this game the lazy way (using your car, and only your car, to get places). also their mission statement is stupid.
mystic: either tied with valor for most popular, or is the second most popular. not quite as retarded as valors from what i've seen.
instinct: the lonely friendless kid in the party of 3. is irrelevant in the fight between mystic and valor, and more or less knows they are the least popular team, to the point of embracing it even. probably the most respectable team out of the 3

Well, it gives your high-CP Pokemon a reason for existing! smilie Pokemon battling is one of the main features of the game, I suppose, but I've gotten to level 13 with only three gym battles under my belt, so...
The other thing is, holding gyms for long amounts of time allows you to earn PokeCoins, which can be used to buy extra Pokeballs, bag space, egg incubators, and more. The only other way to get PokeCoins normally would be to buy them with real money.

Okay, I'll wait. There aren't many gyms around here. The closest is at a memorial park, and apparently it's okay to hide a geocaching container there, but not to hang around there trying to beat a gym.
