Leopardshadow woke to find Kobolt next to her. She smiled at him, grateful for his warmth. A thick layer of frost dazzled the clearing. When's this cold weather going to end? Kobolt shuddered as he woke. He looked at Leopardshadow. "Morning", he muttered. Redheart was sound asleep besides the two. "Should we wake Redheart?", Kobolt asked. "Is it sunhigh?", Leopardshadow hissed. "No" Kobolt replied. "Then let her sleep a little longer, she's still suffering from shock". Kobolt shrugged. Adderfang, a ivy-green kai dragon pushed his way into the den. "Do you two want to come hunt with me and Blacktail?", Adderfang asked as he pointed to a small, skinny gray dragon. "Sure!", Kobolt exclaimed. Leopardshadow followed. Finally, I get to hunt again! Blacktail followed them, looking down. "Whats wrong?", Leopardshadow asked. "My mother died", he hissed curtly. "Plus." Blacktail showed them a long scar across his back. "Were sorry", Leopardshadow whispered. Blacktail nodded. Kobolt pressed unusually close to Leopardshadow. Whats he doing?, Leopardshadow thought. "Come on you three!", Adderfang called. They pelted forward.

Leopardshadow, Kobolt, and Blacktail sped after Adderfang. "Kobolt, you hunt by the Oak Tree", Adderfang ordered. Kobolt nodded, red-brown eyes shining as he pelted in that direction. "Blacktail, you go to the edge of the river". Blacktail said nothing and stalked off. It wasn't fair for his mother to die ..., Leopardshadow thought. "Leopardshadow, you go to the edge of Black Clan territory". Leopardshadow nodded and set off at a brisk trot towards Black Clan. She just needed to impress Adderfang and Kobolt and this day would be perfect ...

Leopardshadow raced into the forest. I'm going to catch way more prey than Kobolt and Blacktail! She leapt over a tree root, only to stumble and fall flat on her wing. "Fox-dung!", she snarled. Sh egot up and gave her spotted scales a few brisk licks. She heard scuffling in a bush. Kobolt's words came to her mind. Stay perfectly still, and when the time is right .. She flattened her haunches and let her tail stick out straight, so it would not brush any leaves. A big rabbit hopped out, clearly unaware of Leopardshadow. She pounced, catching the rabbit and killing it with a swift bite to the neck. Yes! She buried her catch under a juniper berry bush and set off again. Leopardshadow could catch the musky odor of Black Clan. There stench is so strong! She stopped dead, realizing she had crossed the border. Paws were thrumming torwards her. She froze, her dark gray eyes wide. A black shadow slammed into her. Leopardshadow yowled as she felt the dragon's teeth in her neck. Thinking fast she kicked her hind legs out, sending the dragon flying and skidding into the grass. He sprang up, his orange eyes blazing. "What do you want?", he hissed. Leopardshadow spat defiantly. "I accidentally crossed the border, I was just hunting!". Leopardshadow finally got a good look at the unusual dragon. He was not like the kais. He was small, black dragon with very thin golden stripes surrounding his body that seemed to glow like a midnight sun. He had reddish-gold wings and hard orange eyes that pierced Leopardshadow like a thorn. Suddenly, the black dragon burst out laughing. "You didn't smell, us!?", he taunted. "You must have been born without a sense of smell!". Leopardshadow curled her lip, showing her teeth. "Your not even a kai!", he added. "For your information, I'm a leopard dragon!", Leopardshadow snarled. "Never heard of that!", the black dragon growled. Leopardshadow heard a distant howl back in Silver Claw. "Leopardshadow, come back!", Adderfang called. "Leopardshadow? What a coincedence!", the black dragon laughed. Leopardshadow glared at him. "Whats your name?", she growled. The unusual dragon looked at her, his orange eyes burning into hers. "Xay", he grunted.

Leopardshadow took her final look at the dragon, got her rabbit, and sprinted back. Xay let out a disgusted snort and raced the other way, back to Black Clan. That dragon was so hotheaded and rude! "Adderfang?", she called. He soun around. "Nice job!", he praised Leopardshadow, admiring the large rabbit she had caught. "The other dragons should be returning soon, we shall wait for them", Adderfang ordered. Leopardshadow nodded and sat down, dropping the rabbit at her feet. Blacktail pelted back, carrying a small pheasent. "Wow, you caught a pheasent!", Leopardshadow exclaimed. Blacktail nodded. "It tried to attack me, but I was too quick for it." he hissed proudly. They all sat down and waited for Kobolt. A minute's silence passed, until Kobolt came back, carrying the diamond-back body of an adder. He stood proudly, buffing his red-and-black striped chest. He looked at Leopardshadow as if he was only interested in her approval. "Wow!", Leopardshadow beamed. "You caught an adder!". "Nearly got bit!", Kobolt laughed. He blinked adoringly at Leopardshadow. He turned his head to see Blacktail looking at his pheasent. "Nice job, Blacktail!", Kobolt exclaimed. "That could feed one dragon full!". "Thanks." Blacktail muttered. "You all did well." Adderfang told them. "Let us go back to camp". They grabbed their prey and headed back. Leopardshadow noticed Adderfang was staring at her with disgust. Did he see me talking with Xay?

"I can't believe you caught an pheasent!", Kobolt beamed at Blacktail. "Wonder how it tastes?", he asked. "Trust you to think of your stomach!", Leopardshadow teased, giving Kobolt a playful headbutt. Kobolt laughed but he noticed that Adderfang was looking at Leopardshadow with a snarl. What's he doing? When they all got to camp, Adderfang rushed into Bloodfang's den. Kobolt kept tripping over his adder. He dropped it at Leopardshadow's feet. "Want some?" he offered. I caught it for you .. "Can you eat adders?", Leopardshadow asked. Kobolt shrugged. "Fine, I'll take the first bite", he grunted. Kobolt hesitated, then took a small bite. It was juicy and tender and sang with the flavors of the forest. "It's great!", he exclaimed. He pushed some torwards Leopardshadow. She stared at it. There were so many animals she hadn't tried yet and she wasn't sure about this one. She took a tiny bite, and her eyes opened wide. "Wow", she whispered. "Well save some for m-" Kobolt growled. "Leopardshadow, Bloodfang wants to see you", Adderfang called. Is he smiling?, Kobolt wondered. Leopardshadow gulped and padded forward.

What does he want? Leopardshadow padded torwards the entrace of Bloodfang's den. "H-Hello?", she stammered. "Come in", Bloodfang called. Nevously, Leopardshadow walked forward, looking at her paws. Bloodfang sighed. "Leopardshadow how many more times must I call you up here until you learn how to behave?" he growled. Leopardshadow shrugged, her gray eyes avoiding his hard red glare. "Adderfang told me that you were talking to a Black Clan dragon, right?", Bloodfang asked. "Yes! B-But I didn't start it the dragon ran into me!", Leopardshadow blurted out. "You still should have continued fighting." Bloodfang snarled. Leopardshadow opened her mouth, but said nothing, she knew better than to argue with her leader. "You know the rules" Bloodfang hissed. "Defend your Clan even at the cost of your life. You may have friends from other Clan's, but your loyalty must remain here". "So we never get to see other dragons?", Leopardshadow asked. "You dare question my orders?", Bloodfang snarled, baring his teeth. Leopardshadow was taken aback. "N-No Bloodfang", she stammered. Bloodfang sighed. "Leopardshadow you were never supposed to be here", Bloodfang whispered. "What? What aret you talking about?", she exclaimed. Bloodfang stared at her, his red eyes filled with sorrow. "Dear one, your a leopard dragon, not a Kai". Now Leopardshadow's gray eyes were narrowed and she curled her lip. "What are you saying?", she hissed. "Redheart told me the day she found you, your ..... your mother was dead." Bloodfang sighed. Leopardshadow now felt as if she was chilled to the bone. "She ... she was killed? By who?". Bloodfang was now looking at her with deep compassion. "Kai dragons are the natural enemy of Leopard Dragons", Bloodfang told her. Leopardshadow flinched back. She had always felt comfortable here, now, she felt scared and shook with fear. "So what now your just going to kill me?", she snarled. "No!", Bloodfang roared. "I-I can't trust anyone here", Leopardshadow stammered. She raced out of the den, her thoughts filled with many things. She remembered Bloodfang's words. Leopard Dragons are natural enemies of Kais. "But ... But if Redheart found my egg on the night of my mother's death, then how did she die? She wasn't acussing Redheart of killing her mother, was she?

Kobolt saw Leopardshadow racing out of Bloodfang's den, her eyes clouded. "Hey, whats wrong?", Kobolt yelled as he pelted after her. "Leopardshadow!", he yowled. There was no answer. I don't want to lose you ... She spread her wings and jumped up, as if she was trying to fly, but was only merely gliding. Kobolt tried to race faster, but her pace was faster than his. Suddenly, she looked back and saw that Kobolt was indeed chasing her. "Stop, Kobolt! I want to be alone!", she yelled back. "No!", he yelled and tried to sprint faster. She spat and quickly darted in the right direction. Kobolt stopped, skidding on his paws. "Leopardshadow?", he called. No reply. "D@mmit to h***!", he snarled. He looked up at a tree which was covered with moss. He wriggled his haunches and leapt up, clawing frantically at the bark. He looked down, realizing he was several feet off the ground. I must have leaped farther than I realized! He climbed up, digging his claws into bark with each step. Once he was at the top, he scanned the clearing. No sign of Leopardshadow. "Where are you?", he called and stiffled a roar. He looked around. He thought he could catch the slightest hint of her scent. Suddenly, she sprang out of a bush and headed for the gorge. No! Don't head there, you'll never make the jump! Kobolt almost jumped, but he realized he was at least forty feet of the ground. I can't jump and I can't just sit here, I'll lose Leopardshadow ... could I fly? Kobolt narrowed his eyes and slowly spread out his maroon wings. I have to do it, I have to be brave ... Without hesitation, Kobolt jumped, his wings outstretched, frantically flapping. D@mn, I'm going down! Kobolt put every ounce of strength he had in his shoulders and shortned his flapping. He looked down and saw he still had a good thirty feet to fall. Like a gift from the ancestors, a warm thermal of air started under Kobolt, bringing him up. he didn't need to flap anymore. He did it. He, was flying ...

I'm-I'm flying! Kobolt soared through the air. He chuckled in triumph. He flapped his crimson-red wings and found himself going higher. Wait I need to get lower! He tucked his wings in and akwardly glided down. "Cr@p! How do I land?", Kobolt yelled. Thinking fast, he tucked his front feet in and let is hind legs fall forward, bracing for the impact of the hard earth. He landed, skidded in the dirt, then broke into a run after Leopardshadow. She was almost to the gorge. "Stop!", Kobolt yelled. "You'll fall!". Leopardshadow didn't stop, only raced faster. What the h*** is she doing?", Kobolt spat. The gorge was only a couple ten feet ahead of him. "LEOPARDSHADOW! DON'T!", he yowled. She didn't stop. Kobolt was frozen to the bone, his red-brown eyes wide with pulsing fear and anxiety. Leopardshadow took one last powerful stride, and leapt. Kobolt held his breath as he ran. She glided through the air, half soaring, half leaping. Her large wings were outstretched. She extended her paws outward and landed a few feet ahead of the drop. Kobolt was speechless with shock, but was still determined to jump after her. [i]This is it, this jump either leads to Leopardshadow, or death.. Kobolt let the power of the Kai dragon run through him. His blood felt electric. Without thinking, Kobolt shut his eyes tight and quickened his stride for one last moment until he jumped. He leapt, yowling, his legs frantically scrambling through mid-air. Please make it, Please make it!

GO KOLBOLT! GO GET HER! WOOP! WOOP!

Leopardshadow kept on running. I couldn't ever be living with them! There just a bunch of murderous dragons! "Leopardshadow!", Kobolt called. Loepardshadow spat with anger and turned around. Kobolt was hanging off the edge, his front paws scrabbling for safety. "Help!", he yowled. Should I save him? He's been my friend for life Without hesitation, she pelted torwards Kobolt and pulled him up. Kobolt staggered on the ground, breathing heavily. Leopardshadow took a step back. "What ... was all ... that ... for!", Kobolt panted. I can't tell him, Redheart is his mother! "Bloodfang told me that for my punishment, I needed to jump across this", she lied and looked down at the gorge. "He didn't care if you got killed?", Kobolt gasped. Leopardshadow shrugged. Kobolt just stared at her. "You breath yellow fire .... Your impossibly fast ... You can jump great distances ..." Kobolt whispered. "What are you?". Leopardshadow looked back. "I don't know," she admitted. Kobolt looked down. "Jeolous?", Leopardshadow teased. "N-No!", he growled. "Don't worry", Leopardshadow brushed her snout against his. "There's lots of stuff your great at too. He smiled at her. "Lets go back." Kobolt suggested. "Are you mouse-brained?", Leopardshadow hissed. "We can't get back over that?". Kobolt shrugged and spread open his wings. "Really?", she asked. "Yeah! Come on, I'll teach you!", Kobolt offered. Leopardshadow, feeling happier now, spread open her black wings.

Kobolt was balanced on the tip of a rock, teaching Leopardshadow how to fly. "Okay it's simple all you have to do is jump down, glide a little bit, and start flapping." Kobolt told her. "Like this." Kobolt jumped up and flapped his crimson wings until he soared around. Leopardshadow looked up in amazement. Is that admiration in her eyes? Kobolt lifted his chin proudly. He landed rather akwardly and rammed into Leopardshadow. "S-Sorry!", he stammered. "No its my fault I-I should have been more aware", Leopardshadow replied, blushing. Kobolt stared deeply into her gray eyes. "What?", she asked with a chuckle. "Oh, N-Nothing", he hissed. he looked back up at the jagged rock. "Now you try". Leopardshadow slunk up the rock and opened her wings. Sunlight seemed to shine on her. She looks like a brand of fire in the sunlight ..., Kobolt thought. Leopardshadow jumped and began flapping in the air. "Come on!", Kobolt cheered. A gust of wind blew her up and she didn't need to falp anymore. "You did it!", Kobolt yowled. She smiled. "Stay in the air, I'm coming!", Kobolt called. He pelted up the rock and took off with a huge leap. The circled each other, gliding around in the late-afternoon sky. "Come on, lets go home", Leopardshadow said. Kobolt nodded and side by side, they soared off, their slender shadows passing the gorge.

Leopardshadow and Kobolt flew side by side together, their wingtips brushing. Kobolt cast a playful glance at Leopardshadow and gave her a soft nudge. Leopardshadow veered off to the left and nearly hit a cliff's side. "Hey!", she yowled. Kobolt laughed and sped his flapping. Leopardshadow flew after him. Kobolt looked behind to make sure she was coming when a dark shadow rammed into him, bringing him down to the ground. "Kobolt!", Leopardshadow yelled and tucked her wings into a steep dive. She could hear screeching. They're fighting!

Leopardshadow landed and saw the two dragons fighting like dancing hares. The mysterious dragon had Kobolt pinned on the ground. Leopardshadow felt a cold weight in her belly as she realized that the dragon was Xay. "You?", she hissed in disbelief. Xay let Kobolt go and whipped his head around. His eyes blazed with light. "Yes me", he retorted. "If you haven't noticed your in Black Clan territory." "You shoud have the sense to know that the border is here", Xay pointed with is snout to a dark tree. "Even a hatchling would know that", Xay spat. "Wow, you have more sense than a hatchling. Your really fierce dragons, I can see that", Leopardshadow taunted. Xay glared at her, his eyes chips of fire and sprung onto her. The two young dragons wrestled on the ground until Kobolt knocked Xay off Leopardshadow, pinned him down, and placed a paw over Xay's chest. "Back off!" Kobolt hissed. He let Xay up and the black dragon began to preen his dark wings. Why does Xay look so smug? "Say hello to the ancestors for me!', he laughed and flew off. Wow, he's a great flyer already Leopardshadow thought. Black dragons must recieve special training to fly Leopardshadow started up to Kobolt. "Are you okay?", she asked. Kobolt turned his body around to show her a deadly scar. "The venom is already in me", he coughed. No! Help him! Leopardshadow forgot that Black dragons don't kill their prey straight away, thier bite has a venomous liquid in it. Slowly, the prey dies. "Hurry Kobolt, we have to get you home before the venom weakens you anymore", Leopardshadow panted. "Okay", Kobolt agreed. They both spread their wings and took off. Leopardshadow could smell Kobolt's fear-scent until it became overpowering. Will Kobolt survive?

Kobolt felt as if every muscule in his body was surging with pain. "Come on, it's just a little further", Leopardshadow called back. Kobolt was falling behind. "C-Coming", he panted. They dove down torwards camp and Leopardshadow raced for Redheart. Redheart appeared at once. "What happened?", she demanded. "A black dragon bit me", Kobolt breathed. Redheart narrowed her eyes. "Were you on their territory?", she snarled. "NO!", he retorted. "It just jumped out of the bushes and bit me". Redheart looked in disbeleif. "Here, lay down, it will slow the venom's spreading", Redheart ordered. Kobolt nodded wearily and staggered down. Once he laid down, sleep crashed over him like a black wave.

if i were him i would'of screamed like crazy! XO that must of really hurt! really, really badly!

Kobolt laid there, miserable. His veins showed red and blue on his body. "What should we do?", Leopardshadow asked Redheart. "Give him some yarrow" Redheart ordered. "It'll expel poison from his body". Leopardshadow pushed the bitter dark leaves torwards Kobolt. "Eat these." she whispered. Kobolt swallowed them. "These taste horribl-" Kobolt's body jerked and he threw up a mouthful of venom and blood. Leopardshadow stepped back. Kobolt spat. "... Was that supposed to happen?", Leopardshadow asked Redheart. She nodded. "Now give him some watermint, that'll help with his bellyache and shortness of breath". Kobolt ate the light blue leaves quickly and drifted off to sleep in complete blackness, not feeling any better. His breaths were getting shallower. Am I dieing?

kolbolt: i really hated those leaves. especialy when i coughed out blood and venom.

me: no kidding? i remember a few times when i barfed.

kolbolt: your not helping.

me: i know!

kolbolt: *snarls*

thats what yarrow does, it makes you expel poison .... by throwing up

Leopardshadow saw that Kobolt's breathes were getting shallower and shallower. No! Don't die! We've always been friends, I'm not losing you! Her scales prickled with emotion at the thought of losing Kobolt. Mabye I can help? She laid down beside him, closed her eyes, and let the rise and fall of her breaths match his.
Leopardshadow found herself awake on a shining field. She spun around. Where is Kobolt? Am I in his dream? There seemed to be a path that led up to the sky. Is that where the ancestors live? Is Kobolt dieing? "Kobolt?", she called. A striped shadow whisked past her. "Hi Leopardshadow!", he yowled. He skidded to a stop. "What are you doing here?", he asked. Kobolt sniffed. "I've never been to this part of the forest before". "Do you know where we are?", he asked. "...Yes", Leopardshadow stammered. Were near death .. "Its strange," Kobolt said. "Whatever herbs you gave me must have worked because I don't feel sick anymore". "We've got to go back!", Leopardshadow told him. "But it's so beautiful here" Kobolt whined. A bright shape stalked towards them. Leopardshadow recognized the orange figure of Sunscales. "Sunscales!", Kobolt exclaimed and ran over to him. "A-Am I dead?", he slowly asked. Sunscales met his dark gaze with compassion. "Not yet", he told his son. "There is a place for you here, but not yet". He looked at Leopardshadow. "Take her home", Sunscales whispered. She nodded. "Follow me", Leopardshadow hissed. Kobolt gave a glance over his shoulder at Sunscales, then bounded down with Leopardshadow.

Leopardshadow opened her eyes and found Kobolt lying next to her, his breathing normal. She pressed against his body. He doesn't have a fever anymore .. Redheart was asleep in the entrance of the den, her breathing normal as well. Good everyone seems fine. Kobolt stirred next to her. His snout lifted up, only to be pressed against Leopardshadow's. Kobolt stared at her for a second, their snouts pressed together. He pulled away fast. "Sorry!", he chuckled. Leopardshadow held his red-brown gaze steadily. "I-It's okay" she whispered. Kobolt smiled at her. Leopardshadow could see his body was shaking. Why is he shaking? Was that snout-press too much for him? Redheart stirred awake. "Feeling better, Kobolt?", she asked. "Much!", he beamed. She nodded. "That yarrow must have worked good", she pondered. "Actually it wa-" "Nothing!", Leopardshadow interrupted. I can't let Redheart know about the dream! "It was the yarrow", she lied. Kobolt flashed her a look that said "What?" "We can't tell Redheart!", she whispered. Kobolt nodded. Kobolt got up, only to fall back down on his paws. "You look like a newborn deer!", Leopardshadow teased. Kobolt flashed her a glare. "Some deer you'd make!", he growled and leapt onto her batting her with his hind paws.
