I should have sent a PM for this, but eh well, didn't think. Anyway.

In about a year and half, I'll go to university. I was planning to go to uni in England and move in with Cynder_fan and his other friend, but the problem is, I can't find any university that is affordable. I need to find one in Gloucestershire, but the one I found is 11,000 pounds only for the first year. It is just too much. So uh... I was wondering if you could maybe help me find some universities around/in Cheltenham, if there are any cheaper ones... I'd greatly appreciate it. If you want to I'll pay you in FR treasure for it lol.

Pay me? You don't need to pay me at all, anything to help you out!

I'm actually starting to look for universities myself. Firstly, are you able to get onto this website? It's a pretty helpful starting point for finding what universities are around there. I'll have a look around and see what else I can find if this isn't too helpful for what you need.

I can open that website. And silly me, i forgot to mention. I'm looking for an university where I can do graphic design or game design. Or just anything art-related except for fashion and photography.

Do you maybe have any idea where can I get scholarships from? They offered me INTO, but they pay half of what I need. I can't afford the other 6250 pounds because I need to book a flight and get accommodation. I don't know how to get a sponsor or find those organisations since over here, it's a completely diffferent system...
Cynderfyre Emerald Sparx Gems: 3813
#772 Posted: 19:16:47 06/03/2014
That's why I thought that website was good, it does allow you to select courses if you go here- it lists the universities that have those courses, then you should be able to narrow down the search.

As for scholarships, I'm not sure I'm afraid. But uni fees over here are pretty terrible.

Ah. Thanks, though yeah, I'm restriced to Gloucestershire since I can afford accommodation there. C_f, his friend and I will share rent and all other things, so yeah. Otherwise, if I was in London for example, i'd be on my own.

But I must ask, I found this. And to be honest, I have no idea what is that. What is this (HONS), Postgraduate Diploma, MA, Undergraduate, Postgraduate Certificate and so on? Sorry, I've just never heard of all those terms.
Cynderfyre Emerald Sparx Gems: 3813
#774 Posted: 19:30:11 06/03/2014
To be honest, I haven't learned much about them myself yet. Surprised my school hasn't taught me it all yet- they're just more focused on our exams and stuff I guess. HONS is an honours degree. I was pretty sure MA is a masters degree of arts, a wikipedia trip confirms my suspicions. Undergraduate is person who hasn't taken their first degree yet, postgraduate has completed a degree. So all that postgraduate diploma is just someone who has completed a degree?
Ah, sorry for all the wikipedia stuff, it may not be helpful but it explains it better than I could attempt to.

Hm, so, from what I understood, I'd have to go for Undergraduate or Foundation... I'm just really afraid to sign up for Undergraduate because they want to see my portfolio and want to have an interview with me. I can't have an interview, and I certianly don't have a portfolio. Then again, foundation costs 11,000 pounds and undergraduate costs 11,000 pounds. I'm worried that if I sign up for foundation, after I finish that, I'll have to pay another 11,000 pounds for undergraduate... too confusing...

That sucks. Like you said, there's much more choice available over here. Obviously subjects vary place to place, but there also always seems to be several places close by and there's always something to fit your needs. I'm used to that setup, I'd hate it if I was lacking in options.

Better life standard. Croatia is doing worse than Greece. People either run away to study in Canada, Germany or Ireland, or they stay to finish the uni here and move out to any country as soon as they finish it. I am doing the same, either of those two. It is impossible, and I mean IMPOSSIBLE to find a job, and even if you do, you'll get maybe 100 pounds monthly for what you do. Average salary is 500 pounds over here, but, you're really lucky if you get such, let alone anything higher than that. 30% of Croatia is unemployed (350,000 out of 4 million), and the only way to get a job if you don't already have one, is if you have connections. Nobody cares about your diplomas or deegres. If your grandgrandgrandfather doesn't know one employee at some factory or company, you can say goodbye to your job. I know it's about the same in other countries, but not this bad.

And yeah, thank you for giving me those links. If anything I at least found cheaper undergraduate courses.
Cynderfyre Emerald Sparx Gems: 3813
#784 Posted: 20:34:21 06/03/2014
Ah, I see. Like you said, that's pretty much a global problem now, and it is all about who you know for getting jobs or just experience, but considering how badly you've been hit in Croatia if you can get out of there soon as possible then do.

That's good to hear, need me to keep looking around for any stuff?

I hear it's much easier to find a job pretty much anywhere in the world but here, even if you don't know the language. Though, we Croats mostly just go to UK, Germany, Austria and Canada. I think the only reason nobody wants to go to USA even though it'd be the best option is because we all have the impression that Americans are uneducated and stupid, plus health care isn't free. I for one wouldn't like to go USA at all because I just hate their mentality. Europeans are much better to me.

Meh, I would really appreciate if you could help me figure out how do sponsors work for scholarship and such. XD
EDIT: I'm such an idiot. I thought that the foundation course lasts for 2 or 3 years. It lasts only a year and that one year costs 11,000 pounds, and then the undergraduate costs more or less.

America, from what I've personally seen of it, is just really different to Europe in all the ways that would possibly annoy us. Would be too different for me to live in, anyway. Come with us, find work if you can and love our NHS.

Now I don't know much about sponsorships, I'm afraid. Google isn't being helpful this time either. ffffffffff this is all stupid and I need to know this rubbish now

I don't like their informality really. Brits seem to be more tolerant as well, and more open minded, along with some other European countries. I guess their informality and silly educational system is what makes the rest of the world think they're stupid and unprofessional. While I have to know their every river and smaller hill, I'm sure that 80% of them wouldn't even know where exactly is my country located, or they've never heard of it. To me it just seems like they're really only focused on America when it comes to geography and politics, and on Africa and Middle East.

You don't have to do it right now for me, nor are you obliged to do it for me. Just that it's easier for me when the person from that country sends me links and info since it's easier for them to find such websites compared to me. Honestly all I do is Google ''UK England University'' and check out the first thing that pops up. Mostly it's all just elite universities..

Not at all, I'm glad if I can help you in any way, I only want to make sure you get the best for what you want!
This particular thing just seems more confusing. I've been searching sponsors for education and such and not much that's helpful seems to be coming up. Is this any good? I only glanced over it really but it seems to have some stuff on it.

EDIT: On my quest for websites I also found this. Anything useful here?

EDIT 2: If the website is true to its name then this could be useful too/

Helpful information, however what I need is list of companies that would be willing to help me out. I'm not going to look for them right now actually. I just wanted to know how does it exactly work, and I'll try hunting for sponsors when I finish 3rd year of high school in... well, holy crap, 3 months. XD

Once again, thank you for your help. Also, since I'm international student, I need to pass a special English exam to proove that I know the English language. If I pass with 4.5, I'll get 3 terms of Uni which costs 3500 pounds less.
I wonder how will you do all of this when you need to start university. XD

Yeah, those will be useful too, though now I'm doing my book report and can't be arsed to read any extra text lol. I'll read it all tomorrow. Thank you! :)

I wasn't sure if they'd all have links to companies that might help- I though the third one did at least? Maybe not.

Christ, time flies though. We'll all be out in the world on our own soon. That's somewhat terrifying, but it's a journey to look forwards to. Luckily I still have one year (and three months) ahead of me to prepare for everything yet to come.

You should pass that English test fine though, your English seems fantastic to me. :)

I've still got one more year of high school that's 2 months shorter than previous years. They give us time to prepare for some damn mighty finals. Croatian, English and Maths, plus any extra subject you want to take. I'll most likely take Arts and IT Computing.

I know. I can't believe I'll turn 18 in 11 days. I never thought I'll live this long. XD

Hopefuly. I've been to some English competitions, but when I got to regional competition my score was 55 out of 100. I didn't pass to national competition. It was embarassing ;_;
Cynderfyre Emerald Sparx Gems: 3813
#792 Posted: 21:48:46 06/03/2014
I'm behind you in age. You turn 18 just a little while before I turn 17. I feel so young sitting here talking to an adult-in-11-days, it's ridiculous because I'm only a year and a bit behind and I'm going through the exact same university searching process as you are!

Obviously the school system works differently in Croatia, I'm doing optional A-levels now which go aged 16-17 then aged 17-18, you go to school for a year longer then? Or am I just really muddled up?

There's bound to be a load of pressure in a national competition though. For someone not brought up on our language, getting over half in that is a great achievement- from looking at some aspects of other languages I can say English can be pretty damn ridiculous at times.

You shouldn't feel so much younger than me. As you said, it's just one year of difference. XP

Over here, primary schools lasts for 8 years, and high school lasts 4 years (some apprenticeship high schools last 3 years and with those, you're unable to go to university at all). So, 12 years of education in total. 15~16 if you count in university.

To me, English is very simple. German, however, is a whole another story. Yes, it is very similar to English, but the articles are just... argh. You guys have only ''the'', ''a'' and ''an''. Germans have das, der, die, diese, and so on and forth. Latin is just as difficult as Croatian. Which is pretty difficult when you have to change every single word, depending on time tenses, plurals and 'genders'. XD
Cynderfyre Emerald Sparx Gems: 3813
#794 Posted: 22:08:02 06/03/2014
We spend 7 years in primary school- from the reception year aged 4/5 to year 6 aged 10/11, then from age 12 onwards is secondary school for 5 years. So 12 obligatory years, yeah. I haven't counted that up before. Then after that you can wave goodbye to education forever and waltz off to college or a job or you can stay and do another two years of A levels until your head explodes.

German is something that looks not too difficult from a distance if you can remember your der, die, das. Then dem gets involved. Suddenly there's all these different pronouns and forms of "the" that you just give up.

EDIT: Momantarily on topic, look how beautiful this thing is. Spotted it just after it expired on the AH. No idea what price it was going for but damn. Just. Look at her.

Yeah, it's not difficult to understand it if you already know English. It's like Croatian with all other slavic languages. If you know Croatian, you already understand 50% of Russian, Polish, Czesh, and 99,9% of Serbian and Bosnian. XP

Yep, 12 years! I just worked it out by writing it all down:
Age 4 is when you start reception (which is officially the start of primary school), age 16 is the highest you'll get during your final neccessary year- year 11- so that's about 12 years. A-levels or college come after that. I'm doing A-levels now, so by the time I finish them I'll have essentially been in school for 14 years, just those last two are optional. THEN is university.

Ah, that explains it. I started when I was 7, I believe. I had a chance to start school when I was 6, but parents usually didn't want to do that with their children since we were all still pretty much overly hyperactive and not mature enough for school. Also, I've been studying English since I was 7, so, it's been 11 years... explains my good English. XD
