Of course not. Telling somebody not to kill themselves won't stop them from being suicidal; trust me, I know. But there are so many other ways to teach this lesson. The end result of your experiment left it feeling cruel, and until you explained it it felt like an April Fools' joke rather than you trying to make a statement.
The other thing that you have to keep in mind is that sometimes these widespread lessons don't change things for people. You want them to, you intend for them to, but they DON'T. Sometimes you have to touch somebody individually for them to learn and grow.
I understand your viewpoint on this, and for the most part i think you're right, however people do differ from eachother and think different things.
