So, Nintendo just announced the 2DS... Think of it as a 3DS that has no 3D and an inability to close the screens together. It will be priced at $130 approximately and will come in Red and Blue designs. Reggie said "it is designed for the under 7's who can't view 3D(not actual words). It is compatible with 3DS and DS games. It Iooks a bit ugly in my opinion. Plus, we have Parental controls to block the 3D. By the way 2 last points. 1: It has all the 3DS's features apart from 3D and closing the screens. 2: This isn't a joke...

I don't have a 3DS, so I wouldn't mind buying this since it's cheaper. The only issue I have is how it looks and that it'll be a marketing nightmare for people who don't understand what it is. But why should I care? That's Nintendo's fault if they want to be confusing.

Nice, cheap option for those who don't have a 3DS. And it's good for those who dislike the 3D effect or easily feel sick when using it.

.....However, I'm not sure I like the buttons being around the top screen. Still a nice alternative to the 3DS, though.

I like the 3D effect though. So I'll stick with my original 3DS.

2DS can play 3ds games.
Not everyone can afford a 3ds and Pokemon X/Y
For 170$ (2DS plus 1 gen 6 pokemon game) you can get both for less then a 3dsxl

So essentially this is meant to help Pokemon X and Y get sales
(Sorry but Pokemon is meant for kids but I am not judging because I also play it and I am 16)

I think they might have done it since this model is targeted towards a younger audience. Younger children tend to be more violent, or rather aggressive, when handling things. If it closed, they might accidentally break it because, rather than simply shutting it, they slam it unintentionally. My younger brother is one example of this. He used to have his own DS Lite, but he would constantly slam it without meaning to and eventually it broke because of it. It's kind of hard to explain, but I can see why they might have decided against it folding shut.

Probably so it's obviously different from the 3DS. Otherwise the only difference would have been it's name and the lack of a 3D slider. Besdies, the clam shell was never really that good a concept. How often did you use a DS/3DS with the screen tilted slightly? You would always play the system with the screen flipped all the way.

The DS' flip feature has gone the way of all mobile phones that did the same.

And Kid Icarus (Not so much but every so often I will)

I actually use a roughly half opened position for my DS/3DS for a lot of games that center around the touchscreen (Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, etc).

I certainly wouldn't want that option to disappear altogether, especially since I've seen others do it too. It's especially handy if you want to multitask in some way.

I kinda of like it....I will stick to my 3ds though, for sure. I'm just happy that they didnt announce a new console that only play new games so I can play the 7th gen of pokemon on my 3ds without having to upgrade systems.....

When people in a announcement video were playing it, It looked as if they were playing a DS upside down.

I think I want to get one of these for a collectors purpose, and open it/use it incase of an emergency/accident if something were to happen to my current 3DS's

It's not aimed for most of the people here. It's aimed for those who want a cheap console which plays 3DS games. It's aimed for those who are likely to damage hinges of the clamshell style console. It's aimed at those who won't buy a 3DS cause "The 3D effect ruins your eyes".

It's not going to replace the 3DS.

You don't have to buy it.

If you want a normal 3DS, then buy a normal 3DS.

Personally, I like the fact the option is there. And, Europe gets the much nicer looking white and red option.

Well, the screen IS one big screen, just with sections over it to block the bits that aren't used. If it looked like that picture, you wouldn't be able to play 3DS or DS games on it. It'd have to be it's own console. I don't think people would have loved it, as it's not the same as what was actually announced.

In my opinion, I ain't getting it. I already have a 3DS anyway. :3 Plus, I'm busy with Pikmin 3 right now.

I will be getting this when it drops in price, unless the 3DS goes down.


My only comment: Eh.

I already have a 3DS, and i'm satisfied enough with it. if it ever breaks, i'd just replace it with the same model instead of an XL or 2DS (unless by some chance I find the Pikachu 3DS XL.). I find the regular 3DS handheld to be the best, since it folds and isn't too big when I want to play something in 3D (if I ever wanted to in the first place).

as for the 2DS, I have no problem with it. as long as the games for the system are great, which they are, who really cares if it doesn't fold up, or has no 3D function? it would be different if it was, for example, hard to get a handle on the system, but it looks like it can be held just fine. maybe hard to adjust from a 3DS to 2DS, but still.

But it's not for people who already own a 3DS, people making the joke that you can just turn off the 3D don't understand what the point of the 2DS is. The point is so that you're not paying extra for a feature that you won't use, so you can buy the console cheap and play the same games without the gimmick.

the 2ds doesn't look bad

The reason it doesn't close is because the hinge joint that folds the old DS/3DS was the weakest part. As people have stated, this handheld is meant for kids, who are rough with their stuff.
To avoid the main demographic from breaking their systems, they got rid of the hinge joint.
