Reasons for being banned/gnorced [CLOSED]
Aura24 Platinum Sparx Gems: 6561

Just a suggestion. How about revealing the reasons why gnorc'ed or ripto'ed users are suspended or banned? Like a message on their profile saying that they've been spamming with inappropriate content, excessive trolling, unacceptable behavior, etc..

Perhaps that way there wouldn't be random topics of users asking why the user is banned/suspended.

This idea has my support too. If posting the information on the profile is too much, perhaps keep a viewable logbook or sorts where it lists when a user was Ripto'd or Gnorc'd and the reason why. <.<

I know some might say 'That should be between the user and the admin/mods', but in a lot of ways I find that unhelpful. If I don't know for sure what got a user suspended/banned, I may end up making the same mistake.

That's how I see it, anyway.

Exactly. The once concern is that people will bother the one responsible for the ban/gnorc, but with moderators and the report feature, it's usual impossible to blame anyone. >.>

I'm not fussed about it.

Besides, going through all of those profiles who have been banned, and trying to remember reasons why they have would be frustrating, and time consuming; I doubt dark52 would want to do that. He'd say "Urgh! Goonro!"

I reckon dark52 should change the Ripto'd status, to Goonro'd. smilie

Or maybe the new Goonro'd status can be when people ask to be banned, so they turn into a Goonro. I'm such a genius. lol

I agree, we need a list so people aren't banned without a reason.

Example of a Now-Gnorc:

StealthElf101: Excessive Troll topics, and he posted pornographic material in the Skylanders section; the part of the forum where the youngsters hang out.

I agree as well, it would be helpful to other users to explain why they were banned or suspended. For example, with the case of Niblet.

Just because someone did something wrong dosen't mean that their privacy shouldn't be respected.

Anyway, I'm in the middle on this. On one hand, it might put an end to all the curiosity over users being banned and like someone else said, knowing what got that user in trouble might help others to not make the same mistake. On the other hand, it seems like it's none of our business why the person was banned unless maybe the user is actually okay with us knowing.

Because that's wholly unprofessional. If someone is banned, well he/she is banned. It shouldn't be within the site's jurisdiction to breach privacy, which is another aspect altogether that should not be included within a punishment of sorts.

Strictly speaking, being banned simply means that you've overstepped your privilege of communicating with others on the forums. The simple answer to someone acting noticeably out of line is to give a "time out" - a break from the site if you will. That's all you need.

When you think of it this way, having a public place where people can find out why you were a "bad boy/girl" is excessive and potentially embarassing. That isn't any way to conduct any sort of behavior-based correctional treatment.

I don't see how it's so private to show what the users was banned for, as they were the ones who committed to breaking the rule. How exactly is that invading anyone's privacy? You see it on the News all the time of what people are arrested for, and they don't see that as a breach of privacy; apart from blanking out their faces.

But I don't think it's really that important to know what the user has done, if their banned; then it's obvious that they asked for it. In terms of breaking the rules, or actually asking for it.

This would be a better example of invading a user's privacy on the forum; say you wanted to know why Levi was banned; and dark52 got into all of Levi's PM's, and decided to post them up onto the site; I'm pretty sure that would be invading his privacy; but if he just explains what he has done to deserve this punishment in a short sentence or two; I don't see how that could be invading privacy when he has committed himself to do that in the first place. I'm finding it hard to word my point across again.

This is an issue that can technically be met at the middle ground. If the user did something publicly then everyone should have a right to know, however if the incident in question was a private affair (like on PMs or in a Guestbook), then I think it should remain under wraps. <.<

But it's not fun for the other user to have that kind of info spilled about them.

If you two were banned for an embarrassing reason, would you really want everyone on the site to know about it?

I completely understand what you're trying to get at. However, I feel that exposing banning reasons is ultimately irrelevant to the punishment that would come with being banned. I think I've only seen one forum that ever did that. People commonly do wonder about why someone is banned, but very rarely have I seen a forum that would willingly give those reasons out for people to see.

Overall, it's just "none of your business" and you shouldn't make it your business. It shouldn't be compared to the processes of criminal activity (i.e. doesn't justify that breaching of privacy).

In the end, people who do find out are those who have contact with the banned user (e.g. Skype), and then it would spread by word of mouth. If you're really desperate to find out, try getting his/her contact info.

A side note for future mods (hunters): posting on the forums with an explanation when a thread is locked or when you need to ban/warn a user is a good idea, and would help reduce the confusion.
