Some guesses...

  • They are not Lego
  • They are almost as expensive as Lego
  • People remember getting Mega Bloks in their childhood and still hold a grudge despite their improvement over the years
  • Now they have something new to throw money at

i like them, i dont care that they are not legos. Wat mega bloks lacks in the quality of their sets, they make up for in the quality of their figures and great customer service. With skylanders i would prefer just the figures anyways which are a lot more poseable than lego figures. Also if something is wrong with the figure then they will send you a replacement pretty quickly. i've got hundreds of their halo figures and have only had trouble with anything a few times smilie

I love Mega Bloks. Their figures are vastly superior to anything else on the market IMO.

I think in the early years of Mega Bloks they were literally a copy of Lego, but in recent times they've recongised that they need to be different in order to excel. So, they've gotten themes that are wide in demand, but would never be made by Lego due to their rules (Halo, World of Warcraft, Starcraft etc). Lego also never made sets based on pre-existing video games, so Mega Bloks took that oppurtunity too (Moshi Monsters, Need for Speed). Mega Bloks also offers super-articulated figures and highly-detailed unique pieces that you would also never find in Lego, so again, MB are really offering stuff that Lego never has and never will.

Regarding their quality, I understand that the 'clutch' on the bricks was not too good some years ago, but I can assure you now that everything fits together perfectly. In all my years of buying MB I've only ever had 1 problem and that was an eye being painted on a cheek instead of the eye socket! Anyway, MB sent out a replacement a day after I contacted them and everything was fine. They truly have amazing customer service, as mentioned above.

So, yeah, Mega Bloks are awesome and their figures have more articulation than most normal action figures in stores today!

Dark Spyro. I want.

As for Lego vs Megabloks, I guess I'm lucky, for the past several years I've preferred Megabloks over Lego (unless we're talking vintage Lego - I'm a sucker for vintage toys).

Just... That Kaos set. Ugh. That price still torments me and probably Spyroo too xD

Not yet. According to Toys R Us, they should be available just before christmas, but Argos says they'll be out very soon... so it's hard to say exactly when they'll hit, but keep an eye out in the run-up to christmas.

Just to let everyone know, Mega Bloks asked all retailers to remove all their upcoming Skylanders product off their website. MB don't normally do this, so I think some sets may be getting cancelled and replaced with different ones.

Also, the Swarm Mech Invasion set will be exclusive to Argos in the UK.

I'd like TRU to release them before Christmas, if only because I secretly hope a few will be in the sales (Yeah, I know, it's a long shot, but it's happened before). I've seen a wholesaler selling Dark Castle Conquest for $99.99. Still a bit pricey, IMHO, compared to the others.

True, but they are neat nonetheless. Plus it beats getting a duplicate figure with a new set like with LEGO sets (LotR and Star Wars are a big offender of duplicate minifigures in multiple sets).

a way Mega can work around this would be to have interchangable heads, kinda like the halo armory sets.....which is a pain for compleationists though cause i end up getting almost 3 of every set lol

Back in my day we only had Sticky topics in Idle Chatter and Help and Suggestions and Dawn Of The Dragon! And we liked it! smilie

Anyway, to discuss the actual topic... Am I the only one who thinks these are way too expensive? I mean it's already over the price of a figure, there, for the most basic set. Look at the cost of Kaos' set, that is truly ridiculous... Over ten decades. The quality doesn't bother me at all, because even if it were up to scratch with the actual figures it'd still be my preference spending money on them due to actually working with a game. Just the cost, they're so darn expensive and I don't feel I can justify it because I won't play with them and they don't have any other use. I shudder thinking how much they'll need to have from you if they release them here.

The prices are totally in line with other sets in the Lego/Mega Blok genre. My kids are pumped to be able to get Skylanders that they can actually play with in a physical sense.

I was thinking of maybe taking some of my duplicate Skylander game characters and removing the figure and adding something to the base to allow a Mega Blok character to attach. Then they can put the Mega Blok skylander on the game base and "take them into the game". smilie

Lego's are extremely overpriced. I know this because they fill my ENTIRE house!

Let's compare these sets:

New Jabba's Palace: $119
Pieces: 717

OVERPRICED

Kaos's Castle Conquest:$119

Pieces: 924

Better..

i know the new death star for lego costs around $400 if i remember right. But for mega bloks Halo set "Forward Unto Dawn" will cost $250 and have close to 3,000 pieces. Cost wise mega bloks are cheaper. i have to check how many pieces the death star has but it doesnt look like as many

Edit: just looked it up, death star piece count is almost 4,000. In my mind an extra $150 for an extra thousand pieces isnt worth it

Nice pictures! I'll never understand why people thought Chill looked bad.

About the LEGO prices: They're also overpriced because of the branding and licensing. Certain people spend the extra hundreds of dollars because the set is a model of their favorite Star Wars scene or character (like the Death Star).

To each their own, but Mega Bloks and LEGO can certainly coexist. Both have their merits.

Plus, SKYLANDERS. smilie

I don't think Mega Bloks would blind bag Skylanders figures. The Giants alone would make it incredibly easy to pick out what you want (or at least more than their usual blind bagged items). The packaging is probably the same as those small WoW/Halo boxes with a figure and accessories.

Plus they really want to push the Battle Bumper gimmick to combat LEGO's new Legend of Chima ripcords and the soon-to-be-gone Ninjago spinners.
