Just wondering how everyone felt on this....
I know this is the first game where you can fly whenever you want, but sometimes I feel as though it's overrated. You're restricted to the extent you end up climbing as much/more than flying to complete the game, and combat in the air can sometimes be difficult due to the poor camera. In fact.... I think Sgt. Byrd has less restrictions at times.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?

IMO I think its REALLY overrated, the controls are a mess, theres all those stupid invisible walls and random wind elements all over the levels which are really annoying that I usually find my self running rather than flying around, you cant go straight up or down , its a pain to land (especially if your in an area with the wind blowing you into a direction) the air combat is kinda wierd... the enemies move fast around I can never get them into a position and land heavy nukes on them, plus the camera gets screwed and you cant see whats behind you( especially in The Destroyer level and sum other...) its funny how at some points they put platforms and they expect you to climb and jump over them when you can obviously fly over, then whats the point of putting them there anyway?(like in Catacombs...) It just feels like the levels aren't well designed for free flying (even tho it isnt 100% free fly -.-) I could go on.... this is my oppinion tho,so don't flame me |

The flying in this game is a pile of ****, I prefer flying in the speedways/flight levels in the Original Spyro games, at least you can fly a lot better, although you can only do it in a particular level.

^Yeah, true. If free flight were like it was in the old arenas, then it would have been quite fun.

Quite good once you learn how to control it propperly (i have) its a shame about the height restrictions though, but the creators were probby just experimenting.

It's not overrated. It's REALLY overrated.
The flying in the originals were way better. At least you don't just hover above the ground like in DOTD. And I'm sick of people having DOTD as their fave Spyro game only because you can fly. That's not truly loving the game.

If they didn't have the windy downdrafts or sky limits to keep us from flying up to cliffs and such, then I might've enjoyed it. But I still enjoy the free-flight in DotD while flying around the Valley of Avalar.

Extremely overrated. Flying sucks. You can't control your height, you're only about a length off the ground (as long as Cynder and Spyro are), you don't move very fast, you can't control very well, the flapping sound sounds like a cat coughing...

Yeah, I mean the general part I didn't favour about it was how you either had to pull back on the joystick, or hold X to fall.

Its awesome after not being able to fly through the rest of the games i believe awesome is an understatement. Now spyro is grown up it just seems right he should fly.....plus i died alot more having to glide and maybe not reaching a cliff face then dying from air combat.

Flying was fun, but it felt restricted, it would have been nice if the right joystick controlled up and down movement as well, I hated being stuck about 6 feet from the ground. Gliding needed to be sped up, it was way too slow when you decided to glide.

Flying? More like levitating is what DOTD gives you. Flying is able to pitch, yaw, thrust, break, land, take-off, and roll, not float this way or that way. In this game you can't nose dive, or gain altitude , heck can't even do a somersault .
Levitating, or what they call Flying, was such a brutal, horrific feature, IMO. What's the point in adding in platforms if I can fly at anytime (which is partial true)? Now, if there were restrictions like, exhaustion then I wouldn't mind. Heck Tails got tired after awhile and it fit him just fine. I probably wouldn't mind if I could nose dive breathing fire/shadow breathe on my enemies and then pulling up to safety just to circle around and do it again, watching my enemies suffer because their are flightless, but no... no, we get levitating instead... huzzah . |

There were alot of features they could have added, out of any, I think that this would have been helpful to make the flying something more interesting to do, since DOTD is the only game in which Spyro actually flew, besides the flying parts of ANB. |

The original games had flying that was much more 'true' to the word. There were no air currents, you could drop or hover at the press of a button (not having to wait a second first), nose dive, and so much more than in DOTD.

i think flying is better than the other game the whole word of flight is communicating with the air currents, but it would be better if you could controll your flight like in the game DRAKAN but if they make a new spyro game they might make the flying better

Flying... Hmm... Let's say I was surprised to see that ability in a Spyro game, maybe because I grew up on the original 3 Spyro and Crash games. But I have to say I didn't mind it. It might have been a little buggy at points but I enjoyed the cushion of being able to easily clear most gaps.
But I do think that it's, along with most of the game, a bit cliché, and in no way do I associate DotD with the other Spyro games. It's just too different and it seems like half of the storyline is based on Lord of the Rings (especially with Elijah Wood voicing Spyro, what happened to Tom Kenny?). But that's best left for another topic, eh?
