If You Had To Choose... [CLOSED]

Original Spyro (all games before LOS(excluding ETD)) Or Legend of Spyro? Which would it be?

I would choose original Spyro. LOS was good, but too different. I long for the nostalgic value of what Spyro was and truely should be. Playing old games is good, but they're old and much of the novelty has worn off. Even the old character was better. Original Spyro was down to earth, in that he only had one permanent breath: Fire. Ice, Earth, and Electricity are all well and good, but Fire is the Dragon's Element. Period. Other than that old Spyro only had gliding, swimmming, climbing, and headbashing. New Spyro is such a Gary Stu, it's not even funny. He's omni powerful, and essentially a god and that, ladies and gentle men, is not Spyro. Nor is the love-sick, self pittying, wishy-washy, weepy attitude of LOS Spyro. LOS Spyro is as much like old Spyro as I am a bird. And what is with this over-dramatic story line? I miss the simplistic, straightforward plot of Spyro 1,2,3. The biggest twist you had was when Bianca saved Hunter and they fall in love. What's wrong with a good old fasioned, happy go lucky platformer with charming characters, inviting landscapes, and universally entertaining comedy? Legend of Spyro: Fun, Interesting, Attractive, but absolutely NOT Spyro.

While the Legend concept is good at heart, some poor choices were made (especially when it came to DotD) and ultimately the final product was just not all that it was cracked up to be. The originals were an unusual type of game considering the console they were released on. While they weren't big in the story or character development department Insomniac made up for that with decent gameplay. Though the idea was very simplistic (just run around a big, open level gliding between sections and searching for treasures) Insomniac managed to make things interesting by adding well placed secret areas filled with treasures that we had to search for. On top of that, there was a bit of diversity with the addition of level challenges in GTG and YotD. While some were straight forward (such as protecting a friend from a bunch of foes) some required more outside the box thinking (like the Romeo & Juliet challenge) and some were just nostalgic little tidbits (like the hockey challenges in GTG). The music was also catchy in the originals and fit the levels. The fully orchestrated soundtracks of the Legend universe went nicely with the levels, but no tracks stood out in particular as moving or riveting quite like the music tracks of the originals.

Over all, I'd say the originals. Though they didn't really introduce any new concepts to the world of 3D adventures, the gameplay was more enjoyable than that of the Legendverse.

I'm not choosing between the two.
They are BOTH good in their own different separate way.

At least they didn't make a series where Spyro is like a bank-robber.

Good pionts. If only Insomiac and Sierra could collab on a game. I think Tom Kenny's voice suited Spyro sooo much better than Elija wood. At least it suited the personality he should have.

Legend games have got better story, but they are not so fun to play.

Both are good.

Oh, original Spyro, hands down. Just chuck AHT out the window and leave the Insomniac games and you have some of the best games ever made.

Unlike LoS, many people who aren't Spyro fans still remember and enjoy the Insomniac games. I don't know any non-Spyro fans who can tolerate LoS. Heck, only about half of all Spyro fans endure it, even.

But all that aside, the Insomniac games are just more fun to play. LoS, in its effort to be a movie, forgot that we play video games because they're, y'know, games. No one plays LoS for gameplay; it's always for the story, the art, the music, but never the gameplay. Insomniac Spyro, however, is a blast to play. And most people fondly remember the weird music and quirky art, too.

Ah, I miss the days of creative games...

"Love it or hate it, you just have to admit the storyline really was very good."

No, actually. The story is part of why I now hate LoS. When it comes down to it, I think the Insomniac games did have better stories. They were simple and made the cliches they used unique. LoS is just Star Wars and LotR with all the heart gutted out (but they kept the Hobbit and Luke Skywalker in there for some reason).

But the storylines in the originals were... lets say... or better, had to much of the fantasy cliche. But you are right. I do happen to think that the storylines in the originals were way better. But I'm just saying that from a story point of view, not a gaming one. the tlos storyline was good, but not as good as the originals. Orig smilie is still FTW

Legends. Sierra is (or was) an older company with more well established traits. Besides, they tend to not follow the leader CoUgHorigianlspyroisaripoffofsoniccandbanjokazioeOuGh.

Besides, you can't shake a bad hand at a company who's made some good music and actually treats said musicians with way better respect, and besides, they were around in the 80s. =]

I find it very amusing that people complain about the cliches in the old Spyro games (I don't actually remember any that were all that major from those and that weren't a part of older gaming as a whole because of technology limitations), when LoS is literally nothing but cliches. If you've ever read an epic or seen Star Wars, you know everything you will be seeing in LoS. The only thing that took me by surprise out of the entire trilogy was Ignitus not being totally dead, but he is Obi Wan and a great Jedi master, so it made sense.

You know what's funny? None of that bothers me because:

Right behind "A New Beginning" is the Sim City disks, which behind those is Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. Behind that, Earthbound, behind that, Starfox games, behind that, Pokemon. And we can't forget Mario. You could have thrown a Commodore 64 in the mix, but I don't have it anymore.

Of course, I got rid of my Nintendo Crappy-Four and Poopstation, because they were wastes of money (I only got 30 bucks total for the entire PSX, games, and accessories), save for two games: Super Mario 64 and Blast Corps (which Blast Corps is probably one of the very, very few good Rare games made in the 90s).

I swear, almost anything made in the 90s had to be garbage.

Actually, there are a lot of people out there who don't mind diving into a 16-bit game these days. Maybe it's something about the art style or the way it's set up, but there are still people out there who will say that Super Mario World is the greatest Mario game ever (heck, it's even fun for me, even though I beat it for the millionth time now, and it's 2D as anything can get).

Also, does anyone know of the Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past or Earthbound?
