Facts. I'd rather post stuff for a handful of familiar faces to see than for a potentially unlimited number of strangers.
Plus there's just something cozier about a forum compared to big social media.

it is legitimately surprising how many faces from 10-15 years ago still check back in on these forums, those "veteran users say hello" threads always have some faces that i really do not expect to still remember the silly purple dragon website.

there's just something that always draws people back in, huh?

it's sad though, to hold onto so many memories of what this place used to be. it'll likely never be the same. but hey, i'd be happy to be wrong.

whatever new spyro game happens, maybe it'll liven up the place again. dark will make another tutorial and maybe we'll see a new surge of users. if dark ever decides he wants new users, that is. he's probably a busy guy.

sometimes i remember the good ol' days. the ones i read about from various topics here. there's a ton of history on this dusty old forum, as any forum still kicking nowadays. some good, some bad, some just plain hilarious.

next year's another year of the dragon. never say never to a new spyro game, y'know?

site is def dead, its not used in the way a healthy or active forum would be imo. it's mostly spite and nostalgia keeping this thing going. i don't think any new game would bring people back without some serious love from dark into bringing this site up to date and marketing it in ways he did back in the mid 2000s-mid 2010s. still, the fact that we are still here says something about the effect this site has had on the people who joined. i know that i've met some of my longterm best friends thru dS. it counts for something yknow!

New game bringing in new people is cope. Nobody uses forums anymore. Like most people will go on reddit if they want to talk about a new game.

I mean I still prefer accessible online forums, instead of gatekeeping literally everything to Discord servers. At least we can backup websites somewhat, especially when it comes to download links. I really wish this wasn't the "dead internet" because the living one sucks.

Nostalgia for me, honestly. I grew up on this forum, and it was a big part of my childhood. It is partially the reason why I am who I am to this day. I cannot help but to check in every now and then.

alright im gonna be real for a sec

during 2017 i was in a rock and a hard place. abusive father, mom who was trying to get me Out of there - but i was So under his thumb that i couldnt See what was really going on.
2019, finally got away from him, then i went through three years of therapy.
i started to See a Lot of shid, and just. basically reinvented myself entirely as a person. what a wonder getting away from your abuser does, huh? lmao

i'd think about this place every so often. sure, it messed me up a lot of the time, but it also held good memories, and my autistic self still loves spyro dearly, my funny dragon son. so here i am.

did i say i wouldnt be coming back? yeah. but that was also when i was still in a really bad place, and my brain was. not that great!

now? i can safely say i'm the healthiest i have been. and honestly i hope everyone else can be that way, too, now or even eventually.

Aww, that's good to hear! There are a few users with similar stories and I got quite close to that - mentally you think the forum is your biggest issue when it's usually a sympton, not the cause.

Why do we keep on doing this? Why keep on posting here? That (or those) are the questions, indeed. Let us think for a second. Maybe it is about the common user base experience. Maybe it is about sentimental aspects. Or could it be something else? I am going to speak out of my own experiences and observations, naturally. I have no objective evidence to back up anything. Purely speculation, if you may…

I am going to have attempt at the Project_Unnamed special, which is a pretentious, long-winded post. It has been almost a full decade since I wrote that kind of abomination so please be as harsh and critical as you can so my feet will stay on the ground (like anyone will read this…).

Common user experience I have observed around here is partly to explain why people keep on posting here and also why people leave. Given the main subject matter of this community, which is either Spyro franchise or Skylanders, this place has a certain coming-of-age aspect to it. People enter into the main subject matter (video game) as a child/person of youth and as a modern person seeks for a internet community to speak and experience the franchise even further. At one place in history the way to get this was to join a forum, nowadays different social media alternatives (in my opinion social media hivemind echo chambers) have replaced forums.
Now, these forums offer a place where a common user can share their opinions and find out about alternate aspects and views about the games. Throughout the times the user finds other games and forgets about Spyro-related media but still after interacting with this site’s community that user forms strong bonds with other users and drifts to Idle Chatter and Stuff&Nonsense subforums. Certain need to be part of a community develops but the fact is that the need is not light speed, it is not constant.

The need is tied strongly into the coming-of-age aspect. When a young user joins here, that young user is bound to grow into a relatively more mature person. Priorities change, values change and life situations change. Some users forget this place and drift away. They might or might not do occasional returns here and there. but never stay because they have grown into different human beings of their own and simply don’t have the time, energy, or interest to this place anymore which is more than fine, it is actually a good thing to find new motivations in one’s own life. The need fades…

Then you get users like me. Even though I have tried to show a cold, heartless, analytical exterior to everyone around here, I can be quite the sentimental guy. And I have gone through some of those previously mentioned phases but still I am here. And it is simply because of sentimental reasons. I like to be here because sometimes this place keeps on reminding me about the years I have lived through, the good and the bad and the neutral. This place reminds me of the years and the life I have lived, even the parts of my life I haven’t invested here. I keep on posting here because of sentimental values, nostalgia and maybe even by the force of habit. This place has no negative affect on my life, so why to leave, you know? I also have certain hopeless romantic aspect of Spyro regaining its former glory and people one day wake up to realize that forums are better places for discussions of constructive meaning than any other social media nonsense alternative.

Or could it be other reasons? Yes… gems, of course! Look at my avatar, it Is Moneybags for holiness’ sake. I post here for gems only because I am cheap human being always available for the highest (read: sleaziest) bidder.

So we keep on posting here because of nostalgic habits formed by our own user base experiences and act like conditioned animals. Or we do it out of nostalgia for the life we’ve lived or either we (I) are cheap disgraced people of the night for the gems.

I’m definitely in it for the gems. I will win darkspyro
