Please don't tell people to drop out of school thanks.

Listen folks at the very least complete high school and get your diploma. If you don't want to go to college that's fine there's trade or technical schools but don't drop out of public school.

Study hard and try to focus. Hope isn't entirely lost. And if you really need to you can take a semester off without completely dropping out.

High school was fun, but I'm past those days...it's just plain immature to relish back at that age.
Besides, I turned out perfectly fine post high school. I can easily say I'm making more money than any of my friends could wish for hehe smilie
University on the other hand...it sucks...its like high school all over again for the first two years but the next two years all the information is way harder and I'm being forced to go...im just going to have to withdraw. I'm an adult so i should be able to do it..

If you feel that it's all just about money and you just happen to have a safe, satisfying, well-paying job in a family business, then sure. Where do you need education?

If either or both of those things is not true, please educate yourself. Dropping out of school is pretty much like saying "I think working in a minimum-wage job for the rest of my life is a viable alternative to having a bit of self-control. That is, if I even land a job at all."

Not everyone is fortunate enough to find a well-paying job when they get out of high school.

Saying 'drop out' is the worst advice you can give to a community filled with adolescence.

I know i didn't :/

I'm going to use the S word now, so don't be alarmed.

Dropping out of school is a seriously bad idea, because any employer would take one look and possibly just dismiss you.

It might seem like school is the worst place in the world, but you're not there forever so teens of DS advice from your Uncle Greebs is stick with it, because with an education a lot more doors will be opened to you.

And the thing is,yeah, there's a chance you'll end up not learning anything useful for your job(or at least something uni will cover much better), but the main thing people want to see is that you finished school. It's already a bad impression if dropping out implies you're somewhat irresponsible or impatient.

Additionally depending on your major (largely STEM) you can earn significantly more money with a degree in that field than you would as a dropout.

^As someone who has been applying for work for well over a year and a half now with a high school degree, not really. About 40+ applications, only one ever came back to me and hired me (and then silently dropped me before even starting training, without ever even having the courtesy to call me and let me know such).

Yes experience is also fairly important for retail work but I imagine they might've been more favorable if I had (or was working towards) some sort of degree.

At least here in the US a high school degree can be enough to get by, but many employers even for things like that will be more impressed if you have an associates degree or if you're working towards one (it can also depend on what kind of degree you're going for; a lot of people do liberal arts and so it's oversaturated in the market).

I forgot to take into account the workforce in the US as compared to Australia. Two weeks after leaving high school I got a job working in a mail factory center and it was the only job I applied for. It was close to Christmas too so that helped a lot. Luck is also a factor, but not a measure of how skillful you may be.

Here in Western Australia, Engineering (especially mining engeneering) is over saturated due to a mining boom that lasted for several years and recently died out.

Yeah it's more difficult here at least from my experience. Unless you intend to go for retail or fast food, many places will ask for some form of experience in that job position (even secretary). And even retail will usually prefer experience or the sign that they are going further, either be it making a career there and becoming manager or working towards a college degree.

The only jobs I've gotten were both internships; one in my high school during senior year and another through a program for high school/college age kids. The experience in both fields has seemingly done nothing to help my job prospects.

Experience and degrees are everything here. If you have neither and are walking in just as a high school graduate then I hope you have a relative willing to hook you up.

They tell you in order to get the job, you need experience.

To get experience, you need to get a job.

You can't get a job, again, unless you have experience.

It's the same here too. I admit, I did have connections, but I wouldn't have stayed the the jobs I had if I wasn't good at them. When I was a laboratory assistant, I doubt I would've been kept by the company I worked for if I made mistakes even though I asked one of the lecturers if they knew any labs were hiring.

I know a friend from high school who didn't even turn up to her WACE exams (the same as your SATs) became the manager of an appliance shop within six months. Maybe I'm just seeing examples of people being at the right place at the right time.

It's eternal and a pain in the ass. How does anyone expect you to have experience if you haven't been given the chance?

I heard back in my grandparents (even my parents) day if you showed you were willing to learn, you'd still be considered for the job. Seems as if no one has either the time, money, the risk of taking a chance and/or patience to teach on the job anymore.

I've noticed whilst working a lot of people work the bare minimum. I wonder if that has contributed to employers not wanting to teach when their employees aren't interested or are enthusiastic. I suppose that's more of an Australian thing since the stupid mindset here is "if I'm not going to get paid, I'm not doing it" and the government here hands out payments to those who don't need it and makes it difficult for those who truly need help. I'm not saying everyone is like that, but there's no denying it doesn't happen.

I read an article by someone who interviews/hires people. Experience is nice but not required for everything. They put some experience as a requirement to weed people out. If you're willing to give it a shot anyway then they take it as a sign you are prepared and confident in your abilities and will consider you.

This doesn't apply to everything of course and you're probably going to get ****ed over if there's another applicant with experience, though.

While I believe you should get your degree and such, it's possible to get a job even without a high school diploma. One of my close friends dropped out senior year, and recently got a fairly well paying job at a tech firm.

But he pretty much only got it because he's one of the smartest people that I know, and only dropped out because of his sick mom. He's fantastic with computers, and that's what got him the job.

I dropped out because of depression and anxiety reasons (that my school refused to offer help with, even though I stressed how bad it was), and I did get a job at UPS after about two months of actually job hunting. Although I ended up leaving because lifting hundreds of packages at 30+ lbs for four and a half hours straight was hell on my injured back.

Still, it's very disheartening to see many of you demonizing it like it's the most horrible thing you can do in your life and that you can't possibly have a future because of it. That does not encourage those of us that have, for one reason or another, left high school.

Also, not one of you has mentioned that you can get a GED after leaving school, which is just as good as a high school diploma. Meaning that you're not doomed to a lifetime of flipping burgers, you can make up for it if you really want to.

I think what she was trying to say when the topic started is that kids should just drop out of school for no particular reason.

I can understand why you left and i don't blame you, because a school has a responsibility to the students and they let you down.

I also don't blame you for leaving UPS, I would have done the same we're human after all no machines.

I'm from the UK so we don't have GED here, but we do have NVQ which i think is along the same lines.

I know the OP isn't serious at all and was meant as a joke, but it has turned into a serious discussion and my post was aimed at that.

To a school, we are numbers. Nothing more, and probably less.

I used the GED as that is the US alternative to a HSD, and the one I can get. I'm not certain what other countries have, but I am fairly sure that they at least have something similar to it for an alternative education diploma/degree.
